Florida Department of EducationK-12 Physical Education Resource ToolkitEvery student should have the opportunity to participate in quality physical education. Helpingstudents develop the knowledge and skills to select and participate in physical activity safely, competently and with personal satisfaction is a responsibility of physical education. It is theunique role of quality physical education programs to help all students develop health-relatedfitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding and positive attitudes about physicalactivity so that they can adopt healthy and physically active lifestyles.Florida’s physical education standards are grade-specific for grades K-8 and arranged by gradeband for grades 9-12. The standards are based upon established physical education theoriesand evidence-based research and are derived from the national standards for physicaleducation. They provide the framework for alignment of curriculum, assessment andinstruction at the local school-district level. All of Florida’s state standards, course descriptionsand other applicable resources can be found at www.cpalms.org.Florida’s physical education standards are organized around four strands that define the majorelements of quality physical education. These strands are relevant across all grade levels andprovide unifying threads of understanding. The resources contained in this tool kit are groupedby the applicable physical education strand. Movement Competency Cognitive Abilities Lifetime Fitness Responsible Behaviors and ValuesThe Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) states that physical educationdevelops the physically literate individual through deliberate practice of well-designed learningtasks that allow for skill acquisition in an instructional climate focused on mastery. Physicalliteracy is the ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physicalactivities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person(Mandigo, Francis, Lodewyk & Lopez, 2012). During physical education class, students practicethe knowledge and skills they have learned through physical activity, which is defined as anybodily movement that results in energy expenditure. The resources provided in this toolkit are intended to enhance an existing standards-basedphysical education program, as well as promote physical activity in the classroom. Thisdocument is available at the Florida Department of Education Physical Education webpage -areas/physical-edu.
