An electric fencearound a standard cooler is prohibited. Allfood and beverages, food and beverage containers, garbage, harvested fish and equipmentused to cook or store food must be stored in abear resistant container (BRC) or secured— Within a hard sided building; Within a lockable and hard sided section of avehicle, vessel, or aircraft; or *By caching a minimum of 100 feet fromcamp and suspending at least 10 feet abovethe ground and 4 feet horizontally from a post,tree trunk or other object on a line or branchthat will not support a bear’s weight.*Bear Resistant Containers are the preferredchoice of storing food. Park areas generallydo not have a lot of trees making caching thefood from trees nearly impossible to do. Donot use hanging food as a plan to store yourfood because it might not be possible.BRCs are free for use on a first come first servebasis at the King Salmon and Brooks CampVisitor Centers.Signs like the example above will be postedon buildings where firearms are prohibited.3 Katmai Regulations Summary

General Park Definitions summarized from 36 CFR:Aircraft means a machine or device that isused or intended to be used to carry personsor objects in flight through the air, including, but not limited to airplanes, float planes,helicopters, and gliders.ANILCA means the Alaska National InterestLands Conservation Act. ANILCA providesfor some activities to perpetuate the ruralAlaskan lifestyle, such as subsistence uses,traditional uses, access, cabins, and huntingand trapping.Bear Resistant Container (BRC) means an itemconstructed to prevent access by a bear. BRC’sinclude—Items approved by the Department of Interiorand Agriculture’s Interagency Grizzly BearCommittee ( http://www.igbconline.org/html/safety.html). Any additional items listedby the State of Alaska, Department of Fishand Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation (http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg bears.containers ) must have theconcurrence of the Superintendent;Brooks Camp Developed Area (BCDA) meansall park areas within a 1.5 mile radius from theBrooks Falls Platform in Katmai National Parkand Preserve. Reference pages 9-11 for moreinformation.Boundary means the limits of lands or watersadministered by the National Park Service andincludes waters located within the boundariesof the National Park System, includingnavigable waters and areas within theirordinary reach (up to the mean high waterline in places subject to the ebb and flow ofthe tide and up to the ordinary high watermark in other places) and without regard tothe ownership of submerged lands, tidelands,or lowlands.Boundaries of the coast of Katmai are landsabove the mean high tide line and all islandswithin five miles of the coast line.Camping means the erecting of a tent or shelter of natural or synthetic material, preparinga sleeping bag or other bedding material foruse, or mooring of a vessel for the apparentpurpose of overnight occupancy.Carry means to wear, bear or carry on orabout the person and additionally, in the caseof firearms, within or upon a device or animalused for transportation.Firearm means a loaded or unloaded pistol,rifle, shotgun or other weapon which isdesigned to, or may be readily converted to,expel a projectile by the ignition of apropellant.Fishing means taking or attempting to takefish.Flat wake speed means the minimum requiredspeed to leave a flat wave disturbance closeastern a moving vessel yet maintain steerageway, but in no case in excess of 5 statute milesper hour.Hunting means taking or attempting to takewildlife, except trapping.Sportfishing means the taking of or attemptingto take for personal use, and not for sale orbarter, any fresh water, marine or anadromousfish by hook and line held in the hand, or byhook and line with the line attached to a poleor rod which is held in the hand or closelyattended.Federal Subsistence Uses means the customaryand traditional uses by rural Alaska residents(defined under federal subistence definitions)of wild renewable resources for direct personal or family consumption, as food, shelter,fuel, clothing, tools, or transportation; for themaking and selling of handicraft articles andfor customary trade and barter.Off-Road Vehicle means any motor vehicledesigned for or capable of cross country travelon or immediately over land, water, sand,snow, ice, marsh, wetland or other naturalterrain, except snowmachines orsnowmobiles.Permit means a written authorization toengage in uses or activities that are otherwiseprohibited, restricted, or regulated.Park Areas means lands and waters administered by the National Park Service within theState of Alaska. For the purposes of thisbrochure, this includes Katmai NationalPark and Preserve, Alagnak Wild River, andAniakchak National Monument and Preserve.Collectively these areas are known as “KatmaiPark Areas” or simply Katmai.Picnicking is defined as the consumption orpreparation of any food items (other thanwater).Snowmachine or snowmobile means a selfpropelled vehicle intended for off road travelprimarily on snow having a curb weight of notmore than 1,000 pounds, driven by a track ortracks in contact with snow and steered by aski or skis on contact with the snow.Superintendent means the official in charge ofa park area or an authorized representativethereof.Take or takings as used with respect to fish andwildlife, means to pursue, hunt, harass, harm,shoot, trap, net, capture, collect, kill, wound,or attempt to engage in any such conduct.Vessel means every description of watercraft,or other artificial contrivance used, or capableof being used, as a means of transportation onthe water. This definition does not apply to aseaplane on the water.Wilderness Areas are undeveloped Federallands retaining its primeval character andinfluence, without permanent improvementsor human habitation, which is protected andmanaged so as to preserve its naturalconditions.Katmai Regulations Summary 4

Summary of General Park Regulations:Access: All park lands may be accessed bysnowmobiles (with adequate snow cover),motorboats, fixed wing aircraft, and nonmotorized surface transportation without apermit. This includes Wilderness Areas. Note:the use of off road vehicles such as ATVs isprohibited in all park areas.Aircraft Operations: Fixed wing aircraft maybe operated within park areas. Landinghelicopters is prohibited without a permit.Aircraft may not be operated in a mannerthat harasses wildlife. Downed aircraft meansaircraft that have crashed, wrecked or had ahard landing and cannot fly until the FAA hassigned off on it or needs a mechanic’s work.Removal of downed aircraft requires a permitissued by the Superintendent.Bear Spray: May be carried, possessed andused in accordance with applicable federaland non-conflicting state laws. Please notethat bear spray should not be carried inside ofan aircraft but attached to the outside of theaircraft in case of its accidental discharge.Boating: All waterways are open to boatingin accordance with USCG and Alaska Stateregulations. All motor boats must be currentlyregistered and all safety gear carried and usedin accordance with size and operations.Vessels capable of discharge must be able toshow that the system has been made inoper-able. See page 17 for additional informationon boating requirements and page 10, BCDA,must not be more than 2 feet in diameter.The areas of Lake Camp and the BCDA willfor further restrictions.remain closed to fires except as provided forin designated receptacles. All campfires mustCamping and Food Storage: The use of BearResistant Containers (BRCs) is mandatory.be closely attended and fully extinguishedafter use.Food and beverages, food and beveragecontainers, garbage, harvested fish andCollection of Natural Resources: In all parkequipment used to cook or store food must bestored in a BRC or secured within a hard sidedareas, all edible fruits, berries, nuts andunoccupied seashells may be gathered bybuilding or within lockable and hard sidedsection of a vehicle, vessel, or aircraft. Pleaseread these sections carefully, pages 10 and 12.Campfires: The lighting and maintaining ofpersonal campfires is allowed; however, theyCommercial Operations: Engaging in orsoliciting any business in park areas withouta permit is prohibited. There is one developed campground at the Brooks Camp Developed Area(BCDA) that does charge a Campground usefee. Reservations must be made prior to arrival by making a reservation at www.recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777.Pets: Pets are prohibited in the BCDA. Inall other park areas pets must be leashed orphysically restrained at all times and may notbe left unattended or tied to an object.Property: Except for Lake Camp and theBCDA which have more strict requirements,property may not be left unattended for longer than four months. Please call Park Headquarters at907-246-3305 for further information and toobtain a permit.Sanitation: All human waste in undevelopedareas must either be removed as trash or deposited in individual, one time use cat-holesdug at least 100 feet from any surface freshwater source and no more than 6 inches deep.All toilet paper and other sanitary productsshall be packed out as trash or burned.Sportfishing: Sportfishing is in accordancewith Alaska State regulations and federal law.A valid Alaska State sportfishing license isrequired and must be in the angler’s possession while fishing. The use or possession ofbait and or the practice of chumming is strictlyprohibited. Sportfishing in fresh waters isby hook and line, with the rod or line beingclosely attended. Continuing to engage infishing within 50 yards of a bear is prohibited.Always yield the right of way to bears. BackWildlife Distance Conditions:1.
