CLEAR VIEWWinter 2014WGA/MBA HealthInsurance Corneron NetworksContributed by MBA Health TrustAdministrators Capital Benefit ServicesAs it becomes more and more vital for individualsto take ownership of their own insurance plans, understanding your insurance provider networkis a critical component. A provider network is alist of health care providers and facilities (doctors, hospitals, etc.) that are contracted to work withyour health insurance carrier. Providers on this listare considered “in-network”, while those not onthe list are “out-of-network”.When a certain provider is contracted with aprovider network, this means they will provideservices at a certain price, agreed upon betweenthem and the plan carrier. While most plans allowyou to see providers regardless of their association with the contracted network, there are oftensignificantly higher out-of-pocket costs for services received outside of the network compared toinside the network. So if you know that out-of-network benefits maycost you more, what can you do about it? A greatplace to start is searching the provider networkonline. Regence BlueShield has an excellent online tool to help you find a doctor in your area orto check if your current doctor is in their providernetwork.
