Stepfathers & Stepfamily Education Qualitative study:Experiences of 14 EuropeanAmerican stepfathers whoparticipated in a 12-hour course. Most of the stepfathers neededencouragement to attend. Afterwards, they all felt theexperience was worthwhile.COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & Fathers “My wife heard about it and said, ‘Let’s take it, itcan’t hurt.’” “Someone from the agency [ ] said it would begood to come.” “My wife decided for me.” “My wife said, ‘You know, it would probably begood for us, too.’” “I thought it would help with family and lookgood for a court case.”

Perceived Benefits – Family BondingIncreased Family BondingI think there is a greater camaraderie within the family, especially withthe children, and I think the classes helped break down some of thedefensiveness between my wife and I that was starting to build up.COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & Fathers

Perceived Benefits – EmpathyImproved Empathy[The] best part was getting more of an understanding ofthe children . and the problems that they perceive in thefamily and how they react to it. I kind of always worry aboutmyself, and what’s going on in my world. I figure kids arekids. I didn’t realize how much impact my coming into thepicture potentially played in their reactions and acceptance.COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & Fathers

Perceived Benefits – CommunicationImproved CommunicationThe best part [of the course]for me was the fact that justcoming to the class . openedup dialogue in our own home. I just think it opened a doorfor us that we hadn’t beenable to crack open before.COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & FathersWe’re communicating witheach other instead of taking itas belittling or criticism. [Now]it’s more of, these are herfeelings, these are my feelings, let’s see if we can meet in themiddle. So, in the last 2 weeksit’s about 100% better.

Perceived Benefits – Stepfather PracticesImproved Stepfather PracticesThey’re giving the informationthat most biological parentsunderstand . but being astepparent you don’t have thatinformation. You don’t have whatthey clung to when they weretrying to learn to walk; you don’thave what was the first thing theyfell on. So having that information. from the course is just, I don’tknow how to explain it, it’s justamazing.COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & FathersI know [my fiancée] and I havegotten closer together . we talk alot more and made a list of ourtop five discipline things. Then wedefined the consequences for thetop five things. They say pick yourbattles, so we pick five battlestogether and say, ‘Okay, these arethe things that we are not goingto tolerate.’ Because before wedidn’t really know how to handlethem, because this is all new.

Latino Men in Stepfamily Education Qualitative study of 16 Latino men whoparticipated in a 12-hour course. Four themes:o Class Recruitment and Participationo Developing Positive Relationshipso Value and Importance of the Familyo Normalization of the Stepfamily SituationCOPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & Fathers

Class Recruitment & Participation Half were recruited through personalinvitation by a facilitator. The remainingparticipants were recruited throughreferrals by individuals (e.g., a counselor, friends from church, previous classparticipants, a family friend).COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & Fathers The most prevalent reason for attendingthe course was to gain information andunderstanding on how to deal with(step)children.I wanted to learn how to treat mystepchildren and have a goodrelationship with them. I wasn’tprepared for any of this because it wassomething totally unknown to me.

Developing Positive RelationshipsImproved Parenting and FatheringI have to change the way Icommunicate . We have the toolsgiven to us by the people whotaught this course.Developing a Positive Couple RelationshipCOPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & FathersPositive Parent-(Step)Child RelationshipBecause I don’t have an extensiverelationship with my daughter, I needto be with her in places where shedoesn’t feel so much pressure andplaces that won’t cause her stress whenshe returns back home [to her mother’shouse]. Perhaps it is better that I godown to her on Saturdays, take her toeat, enjoy the weekend, talk . and thentake her home. If further in the futureshe wants to be with me more, great!

Value and Importance of the Family Inclusion of immediate and extended family members Discomfort with labelsOne thing, as far as me and my wife, my daughter is not my stepdaughter, she is mydaughter. She is my son’s sister, not their stepsister. We’ve always been that way. She[wife] had two from her first marriage; I had three from my first marriage . . . andtwo babies that we’ve had together. When my daughter comes over they don’t say,‘Hey, there is my stepsister.’ [Rather it’s] ‘This is my sister,’ ‘This is my brother.’ Theydon’t distinguish stepbrother and stepsister because we are not, we are a family.COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & Fathers

Normalization of the Stepfamily SituationNormalizing is comforting[Throughout the course]you get to meet otherpeople and see that weare not the only ones.COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & FathersThe stepfamilies [in thecourse] have made thisa great experience.

Implications for Practice Utilize personal invitations by program staff and family to gain trust. Recruit with an emphasis on what is being taught in the class and how theskills learned can impact family outcomes. Focus on improved fathering, particularly when dealing with stepchildren. Use inclusive language and be cautious with “step” terms, particularlywhen working with Latino audiences. Normalize diverse family types and roles.COPARENTING 201:Tips for Fatherhood Programs & Fathers
