The mission of the Gospelcalls us to be Christ for others. There is so much brokennessand pain in our world. Many people are lost and feelinglonely, marginalized and oppressed, victimized and abused.Every time we receive the Body (and Blood) of Christ, we areasked to become what we eat. Are we willing to step asidefrom our preoccupations and concerns so that we can beChrist for others? The power and presence of Christ in theEucharist becomes present in us. In receiving thistransforming presence of Christ, we can truly effect changein the lives of those we meet. We can show them God’sunconditional, ever-present love and the beauty that cancome from loving others. We are given the grace tobecome temples of justice and peace, carrying God’s sacred LPiPresence within us wherever we go.Mark AndersenST. MEDITATIONGOSPEL MEDITATIONENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDINGOF SCRIPTUREJune 6, 2021 The Most Holy Body and Blood ofChristAs our world faces so much turmoil and change, itis now more important than ever to rememberwho God is, who we are and where we are going. Itis easy to get distracted and lose focus, especiallywhen we are being pulled in so many directions. We can not only lose sight of God but one another.Maintaining our well developed and maturerelationships with God and one another is essentialto continuing to live, healthy, happy, and focusedlives. In a message to young people, Pope BenedictXVI said, “the happiness you are seeking, thehappiness you have a right to enjoy has a nameand a face: it is Jesus of Nazareth, hidden in theEucharist.” What is true for those who are youngeris even truer for those who are older. Regardless ofhow the particulars of life change over time, human beings are still hard-wired to seek thefullness of life and happiness. How we embark onthis journey and what we choose along the way willindicate whether we meet success.only way we can discover peace-filled resolutions toviolence and create innovative solutions to what isfueling its need in the first place. True happiness, for the young and old alike, becomes an obtainablegoal.St. John Maria Vianney says it so well. “There isnothing so great as the Eucharist. If God hadsomething more precious, he would have given itto us.” Only the Eucharist has the ability to connect, sustain, strengthen, and properly orient us, not onlyon the road of this life but the road to life eternal.Knowing this, when life gets challenging, unsettling, and difficult, we can rely on and cling tothis gift we have in the Real Presence of Christ. Thisactual encounter with God celebrates God’sunconditional love for us and grounds us to thetruth of who we are in a way nothing else is able todo. Because through the Eucharist we really dobecome the Body of Christ, we are also bondedtogether in a most perfect way to one another asthat Body. Nourished, united, and strengthened bythe Eucharist, let us individually and collectively, bring this wonderful gift to all we meet, especiallythe poor with whom we have a special connection. There is so much brokenness and pain in our world. Many people are lost, feeling lonely, anxious, marginalized, victimized, isolated, oppressed, andabused. Every time we receive the Body of Christ,we have an opportunity to become what we eat.The power and presence of Christ in the Eucharistbecomes present in us and effects change inourselves and in the lives of those we meet. We aregiven the grace to become temples of justice andpeace, carrying God’s sacred Presence within uswherever we go. Our faith community is ignitedwith the fire of God’s love and stands out as abeacon of hope in a world that is lost. This is the LPiKeep Your Eyes Fixed on JesusQUESTIONS OF THE WEEKINVITE PARISHIONERS TO REFLECT AND RESPOND TO SCRIPTURE First Reading:Moses and the ancient Israelites ratified the covenant God established with them at Mount Sinai with theblood of a sacrificed animal. The sacrificed animal affirmed Israel’s commitment: “We will do everything theLord has told us.” Why do you think Israel tied sacrificed blood to their verbal commitment?Second Reading:The author of Hebrews teaches us that the sacrificed blood of Christ sanctifies us and offers us eternalredemption. How do you see this connected to ancient Israel’s practice of sacrificing animals for their blood?Gospel:Mark’s account of the institution of the Eucharist is linked to the Jewish Feast of Unleavened Bread when aPassover lamb was sacrificed. What do you think Mark is teaching us in making this connection? LPi5

WHY DO WE DO THAT?CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINEDQuestion: Why are some saints honored as “patronsaints”?Answer:Each person is unique and each of us has differentgifts, interests, talents, and, yes, even struggles andareas where we need to grow. This is no less true ofthose holy women, men, and children who havebeen canonized or beatified.EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIPRECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTSWe Can Prepare the Upper RoomWe all know that person, don’t we? Hey, maybe we’veeven been that person.“I have a great relationship with God, but I don’t go tochurch regularly. God and I are on good terms. I can talkto Him just fine on my own.”There isn’t anything false in these statements. It’simportant to have an intimate, even conversationalprayer relationship with God. But the problem with thisattitude is that it implies that churches don’t matter.Community worship doesn’t matter. Today, we arereminded exactly why that is so untrue. Why we needour parishes, our priests, and each other. The Body and Blood of Christ — that’s what it’s all about. If it’s not about that, it’s not about anything. If we don’thave the Eucharist, we’re just like the ancient priests, making sacrifices that don’t have the power to redeemanybody.Where do we receive the Body and Blood of Christ? Formost of us, it’s in our parishes. The altar of sacrifice isalso the table we gather in front of, as a family, tobecome one with Christ in the truest and realest waypossible, recreating the scene in the Upper Room overand over again every time Mass is celebrated. The disciples were commissioned by Christ to prepare theUpper Room for the Last Supper. How can we take up thatwork ourselves? How can we strengthen the bonds in ourspiritual family? How can we serve our parish, alwaysremembering that the table is not meant to be set only fortwo?— Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS LPi6Because we believe that the saints and blessed areboth models of faith and intercessors, Christianshave looked to certain holy people as role modelsand heavenly protectors for occupations, spiritualcharisms, and even places. Although the Churchsometimes names a person as a patron saint (e.g.Saint Philip Neri as the patron of Rome, Saint Clareof Assisi as the patroness of television, or SaintAloysius Gonzaga as the patron of youth andyoung adults), more often it is popular devotionthat inspires lay Christians to turn to a particularsaint or blessed for heavenly help and support. Thisis how, for example, Saint Cecilia came to behonored as the patroness of musicians, SaintToribio Romo as patron of migrants coming intothe United States, and Saint Gertrude of Nivelles aspatroness of cat lovers. Although there are officialand unofficial lists of patron saints, we shouldalways feel free to ask any and all the saints to giveus their patronage and protection in whatever it isthat we need.
