Volume 4, Issue 8February 22, 2009Our Community GathersRev. Dwayne Johnson &Rev. Kristen Klein-CechettiniYou Are My GodResurrection SingersWords & Music by Billy FooteArranged by Dan Galbraith Exchange of Peace Call to WorshipAnthemLift Every Voice and SingLift every voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring,Ring with the harmonies of liberty;Let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies,Let it resound loud as the rolling seas.Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,Let us march on till victory is won.Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chast'ning rod,Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feetCome to the place for which our people sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered; We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at lastWhere the bright gleam of our bright star is cast.God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;Thou who hast by thy might, Led us into the light,Keep us for ever in the path, we pray.Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee,Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee;Shadowed beneath thy hand, May we for ever stand,True to our God, true to our native land.Instrumental InvocationHeavenSound HandbellsKedric Brown, clarinetJust a Closer Walk with TheeTraditional Folk SongArranged by Bruce Greer Please rise in body or spirit. We WorshipThis hymn is knownas the AfricanAmerican NationalAnthem. Scripture ReadingsRev. Kristen Klein-Cechettini2 Kings 2:1-6We Hearthe WordWhile the primarytheme of the passageis the ascent ofElijah, other themesare also important.First is the matter ofprophetic succession.Elisha was chosenby Elijah; he didnot assume thatrole independently.Though chosen, hehad to prove hismettle, withstandingrejection, resistinginappropriateacclaim of others(the company ofprophets), andstanding humbly yetsteadfastly in thepresence of God." Dianne Bergant,Feasting on the Word,439When God was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah andElisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here. God issending me to Bethel."Elisha said, "As God lives and as you live, I will not leave you."So they departed together for Bethel. The disciples of the prophets thereapproached Elisha, asking, "Do you know that God is going to take Elijah fromyou today?"Elisha replied: "Yes, I know. Now, be silent."Then Elijah spoke, "Stay here, Elisha. God is sending me to Jericho."Elisha replied: "As God lives and you live, I will not leave you."So they departed together for Jericho. The disciples of the prophets thereapproached Elisha, asking, "Do you know that God is going to take Elijah fromyou today?"Elisha replied: "Yes, I know. Now, be silent."Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here. God is sending me to the Jordan."Elisha replied: "As God lives and as you live, I will not leave you."So the two of them walked on.Vickey Gibbs2 Kings 2:7-12Fifty disciples of prophets stood off at a distance, facing the place whereElijah and Elisha stopped at the Jordan. Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up andstruck water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the twoof them crossed over on dry land.Once across, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me, what may I do for you before Iam taken from you?"Elisha replied, "Let me inherit a double share of your spirit.""You ask a difficult thing," Elijah said. "If you see me when I am taken fromyou, it will be granted you - otherwise not."As they were walking along and talking with each other, suddenly a chariotof fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two, and Elijah went up toheaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, "My father! My father! The chariot and cavalry of Israel." And Elisha saw nothing more. Then he tookhold of his clothes and tore them apart.2

The ChaliceHer son had always been a lovely child: inquisitive, sensitive, compassionate. In the past year, however,a change had risen in him: agitated, selfish and evenangry – she was beside herself with concern. It isthe sugar, it doesn’t agree with him! her motherwould tell her. It’s the sugar, it is like poison in theboy! her grandmother agreed. So she tried to keepthe sugar from him, but he would be a young mansoon and he challenged her: That is stupid! he wouldproclaim, What do you know about such things? Shedetermined to make the days journey with him, havehim see the Wise One; her son would listen to him And so, rising early in the morning they set out fromthe village: she, resolute; the soon-to-be-young-manwho was her son, surly and shuffling at her side. Theday of walking was dusty and tedious, the line to seethe Wise One long. At last, in the late afternoon, thewoman brought her son before the Wise One. Sheexplained that he was a lovely child – inquisitive, sensitive, compassionate – but that the sugar waspoisoning him, changing him into someone untrueto his own spirit. Tell him to stop eating sugar!she begged. The Wise One looked upon them bothquietly. Please – I ask of you: tell him to stop eatingsugar! she repeated. Again, the Wise One consideredthem both silently. Eventually he spoke, saying onlyReturn in 3 weeks. The woman was beside herself, but the Wise One turned to the next person in line. Shetook her son and began the long walk home. Threeweeks later the woman and her son again made thejourney. Arriving at their second meeting with theWise One, he welcomed the woman and her son andhe spoke to the soon-to-be-young-man solemnly, withboth compassion and conviction: My son, the sugaris poison to your spirit; you cannot be truly free ordeeply happy until you let it go. This is an importanttime in your life – and it is time for you to stop eatingsugar. The woman wept as she saw understandingand acceptance dawn within her son’s eyes. Thankyou, beloved teacher, thank you! she whispered. Asthey turned to go, the woman paused. Can you tellme, Wise One: why could you not have spoken thesevaluable words to my son when we made the journeythree weeks ago? The Wise One bowed once beforeher, and answered: Three weeks ago I was stilleating sugar opening.receiving.offeringLife in FullnessFEBRUARY 22 - No ChaliceA Sip from The ChaliceSpiritual Deepening Practice:Reflecting on Sacred StoriesThen those who reverenced God talked with eachother, telling stories of their spiritual journeys andGod listened and heard. A scroll of remembrancewas written in God’s presence concerning thesewho spoke of their walk with God and how theyhonor God’s life with their own. "They will be mine,"says the Holy One, "in the day when I make up mytreasured possession. I will uplift them, just as incompassion a parent holds fast to beloved children. And you will again see the distinction between thelives of those who turn to God and the lives of thosewho turn away, between those who serve God andthose who do not.-- Malachi 3:16-18, adaptedReflecting upon the witness of Malachi in the HebrewScriptures, devout practitioners of the Jewish faith saythat when pious people sit and tell holy stories, Godcomes and listens. Generations of people of Africandescent have marked the “way out of no way,” fromdespair into faith and from bondage into freedom, with words lifted in song and story. LGBTQIA peopleshave for years braved violences of all kinds to bringstory from silence, to speak our truth into life. Faith freedom life God-with-us is proclaimed in theSacred Stories we share and in the death-defying, lifeaffirming, community/ies we form, rooted in storiesof faith. Bill Moyers writes: “Once in East Africa, onthe shores of an ancient lake, I sat alone and suddenlyit struck me what community is. It is gathering arounda fire and listening to someone tell us a story.” Themeditative practice of Sacred Storytelling involvesreceiving a faith-story in such a way that whenlistening, even if others are present, a person shouldassume that on a spiritual level the story is being told"just for me," and should ask, “Why would God intendfor me to hear this particular story at this particulartime?” Listen - what is God intending for you to hearthrough it’s telling at this time? Read the story aloud.Listen to the words.Relax. Listen inside yourself for God’s word withinyou. After 3-5 minutes of spiritually receptivelistening note anything you may have received foryour journey 7
