Avalonalso provides an invaluable secondary mission, that of oceanographic research. (Photoby ]01 Ray Fredette Jr. )Rescue/research sub plieswaters under Monterey BayBy Lt. William S. Spann A Navy deep-submergence rescue vehicle, the Avalon, and its support ship, MVDelores Chouest, arrived in Monterey onMay 24 to assist the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and NPSin the maintenance of several deep-seaoceanographic measuring devices.Avalon will provide scientists at MB ARIand NPS the ability to examine and makerepairs to measuring equipment moored inthe bay at depths up to 5,000 feet. Theseparticular instruments measure ocean current flow and collect samples of sedimentmaterial for analysis. The scientists will also use Avalon tomake observations of biological organismson the bottom of Monterey Canyon.A val on is one of two such craft in theNavy inventory. It is designed to provide aquick-reaction, worldwide, all-weathercapability for the rescue of survivors in adisabled submarine. The DSR V, as it isknown, is transportable by road, aircraft, ship or submarine and uses elaborate searchand navigational sonar, as well as closedcircuit television, to locate a disabled submarine and to pinpoint the submarine'sescape hatches.A secondary mission of the DSRV is toprovide oceanographic research assistanceto scientists when possible. The craft is propelled by electric motorspowered by silver/zinc batteries and carriesa crew of four. There are seats for 24 rescued men in the 50 foot-long submarine, which has a range of24 miles at three knots. The sub departed Thursday. With a new look capturing whatwas hot Navy technology in decadespast, the NPS museum opened recently after a complete redesign.John Sanders, deputy public affairs officer and museum curator, said that to have a vision for thefuture it's important to recognizeand understand the past."The military and academicenvironment of NPS is unique in theannals of history. What we hope tobe able to do is to reflect that past ina way that helps to show the tradition and pride the school bas," besaid. Many gaps in the school's historyremain to be filled. While displayingturn-of-the-century and World WarI-era instruments, most of whichrelate to electrical engineering,Sanders is searching for mechanicalengineering instruments, reflectingthe school's first academic program. There is also a lack of photographic documentation. Practicallyno photos are on file of the school 's1951 move from Annapolis toMonterey."I encourage faculty memberswho were on board during the moveto dig out old scrapbooks and bringin old photos. That would be mosthelpful," Sanders said.Sanders said Mick Speer, a NavalReserve photographer's mateserving his two-week active dutystint, was instrumental in creatingthe museum's unique esthetics.Speer is a videographer and exhibitdeveloper in his civilian occupation.
