CORNERSTONE’S2019 ANNUAL REPORTCornerstone’s continuum of service helps tocreate communities where individuals andfamilies are safe and children thrive.We advocate, educate andlead the way to social change.

PROGRAM SERVICES & ACCOMPLISHMENTSDAY ONE Cornerstone’s statewide Day One program is a unique collaboration supporting a networkof over 90 Minnesota domestic violence, sexual violence, anti-trafficking, youth advocacyand general crimes agencies. Day One ensures victims across the state getconnected to safety and services with just one call, text, email or onlinechat. The program’s call center hosts the Minnesota Day One Crisis Lineand the Minnesota Crime Victim Support Line with 24/7 telephonicinterpreter services, operating a secure online database that providesreal-time information regarding available bed space and servicesamong network members. Day One is the recognized first point ofcontact for Minnesota’s No Wrong Door/Safe Harbors Law, ensuringsexually exploited youth have access to support, safety and shelter.Day One also partners with ThinkSelf to better equip domesticviolence and sexual violence organizations across the state to serveDeaf and hard of hearing survivors. Day One’s Minnesota Alliance forFamily & Animal Safety (MNAFAS) program provides safe temporaryfoster care for the pets of families and individuals experiencing violence.93% of victim/survivorsseeking safetyvia the Day OneCrisis Hotlinewere connectedto availableshelters.Last year, the Day One Call Center responded to 30,001 calls, texts and chat messages fromvictims and concerned persons seeking safety, resources and support.EMERGENCY SERVICESAnyone in imminent danger of violence can access Cornerstone’s Emergency ServicesProgram. It includes 24 hours/7 days a week hotline, crisis intervention and advocate support,a 35-bed Emergency Shelter, a Hotel/Motel Partnership, and all basic needs.In 2019, Cornerstone provided 121 adults and 121 children with 11,365 nights of safe housingand 34,095 meals.COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT SERVICESThrough our Community and Economic Empowerment Services program, advocates areavailable to assist survivors with addressing economic barriers resulting from the violence:housing de-stabilization, job readiness, credit/debt issues, financial literacy and safetyneeds. Services also include transitional housing and access to matchedsavings accounts for cars, homes or continued education. Last year,this program served 582 persons through individual and groupsupportive services, safety planning and educational groupsfor victims and their families. Cornerstone’s evidencebased financial literacy curriculum is being offered to lowincome survivors in our community and designatedstaff offer continued support through home-basedservices after families exit shelter. Transitionalhousing services include two years of housing andintensive support for 13 families. Staff also workon-site at two low-income housing complexes,ensuring families have access to support andresources to maintain stable housing.In 2019, our Community and EconomicEmpowerment Services Program served582 persons through individual and groupsupportive services, safety planning andeducational groups for victims and their families.94% of EmergencyServices participantsreported feelingmore in control oftheir lives.100% of supportgroup participantsreported learningnew coping skills. 96% of financialliteracy participantsreported feelingmore financiallysecure.New in 2019: Cornerstone began a Rapid Rehousing program to support women and families in HennepinCounty who are experiencing homelessness due to domestic violence transition into safe, stable housing.

PROGRAM SERVICES & ACCOMPLISHMENTSVICTIM ADVOCACY PROGRAMCornerstone’s Victim Advocacy Program provides services to victims of crimes—bothinterpersonal violence and general crime. These services consist of criminal justice systemsnavigation including, but not limited to, court accompaniment, assistance with restrainingorders, increased access to funding meant to mitigate victimization, resources and referrals.1,698 victims of criminal domestic assault had direct contact with CCJI staff in 2019.91% of participantswho receivedCriminal Justiceservices reportedan increasedunderstanding ofthe criminal justicesystem.CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIESCornerstone has long believed in the importance of serving children and youth impacted byviolence in order to mitigate the negative effects violence has on young minds and bodies.Our services for children and youth include:Supportive Services: Through a trauma-informed approach, staff facilitate servicesdesigned to promote positive youth development.Early Childhood Services: Specialized services for children ages 0-5 and their parents;activities are designed to mitigate the impact of violence on brain development and longterm behavioral and health outcomes.School-Based Services (SBS): Staff conduct classroomprevention presentations in schools and provide individualadvocacy, support groups and truancy prevention services.Last year 12,196 students participated in classroompresentations and 350 connected with Cornerstonestaff in their building because they experienced orcaused abuse, harassment or bullying.97% of youth whoconnected with anadvocate reportedthat they havelearned ways tostay safe.Youth Advocacy and Support Services: Youthadvocates are available to meet with children,youth and their families to learn more about howviolence impacts their social, emotional, physicaland behavioral health and to develop strategies toheal from any past traumatic events. Cornerstonealso provides prevention and advocacy for sexuallyexploited or at-risk youth, providing a safe place toshare their story, receive support and explore resources.Parent Education and Support Services: Parents areprovided with educational and individual support that provides asafe space to discuss the challenges and joys of caring for children.Staff are available to serve as a sounding board and to provide creative approaches on how toset appropriate boundaries, build relationships, and understand the developmental needs oftheir children.97% of parentsreport that theyhave noticed animprovement intheir child(ren).Clinical Services: Therapists provide assessment, treatment and support for adults andchildren (ages 6-17) who have been impacted by abuse. The focus of their work is to helpprocess traumatic events and provide healthy coping skills to assist with the healing journey.In 2019, mental health practitioners provided specialized, trauma-informed affordabletherapy ( 0- 30) to 115 adults and children affected by interpersonal violence for a total of922 therapy sessions.New in 2019: Some General Crime Victim Services advocates began co-locating in a partner agency’s northMinneapolis office to increase accessibility. SBS integrated into the Brooklyn Center Schools’ community health clinic.
