Fall 2013/5774Vol. VII Issue No. 1A Message from the Head of School, Rabbi Samuel J. LevineDear Parents,My wife and I joined our children and grandchildrenon a trip to Paris this summer. The City of Light didnot disappoint as it literally and figuratively offered us asmorgasbord of delights. The number of kosher restaurantsseemed infinite and the historical sites were abundant andfascinating. In the twelve days we were there we walked moremiles and ate more bread and cheese than we ordinarily would in half a year. The trip provided me with a number of insights. The Palace at Versailles is the grandest edifice Ihave ever seen. Its scale and opulence are beyonddescription. The Louvre, too, is majestic. Thesebuildings were home to one man – the King ofFrance. “For the Glory of France” is an epitaphinscribed, during the 20th century, on one ofthe buildings at Versailles. These buildings, however, were not built for the glory of a nationbut rather for the hubris of Louis XIV. Although Louis XIV completed his reign, the price for his excesses was paid by his descendants and his nation throughupheaval, suffering and death. Although impressive to behold, the obscenityof Louis XIV’s excesses are powerfully driven home by these buildings.A different thought occurred to me as we walked the perimeter of the Cathedralof Notre Dame. Construction of the cathedral was begun in the 14th centuryand concluded in the 16th century. It took almost 200 years to build. Thepeople who conceived and worked on this project did not live to see itscompletion. I marveled at their ability to imagine a project that would benefitgenerations yet unborn and to be able to sustain the project over centuries. On a daily basis, I attended services at Agudos Hakehilos, a Parisian synagoguecelebrating its 100th anniversary. The shul was founded by Ashkenazi Jewswho were deported and then exterminated in Nazi death camps. The currentmembership is predominantly Sephardic. I have visited the death camps as wellas cities and villages in Poland. With the exception of Krakow, I witnessedvery little evidence of the vibrant Jewish communities that existed therebefore the war. Even in Krakow, the surviving synagogues are maintained asmuseums by the Polish government. Although showing the effects of age andtight budgets, the shul in Paris remains otherwise unchanged from its prewarstate. The Aron Hakodesh is as it was 100 years ago, the pews are original, and the brass chandeliers and candelabra that adorn the synagogue are asspectacular as when they were first installed. But what makes this synagogueextraordinary is the palpable presence of those Jews who were murdered duringthe Holocaust. More than any place where I have been, this shul providedme with a strong sense of connection to the victims of the Holocaust. Theirwhispered tefilot continue to reverberate throughout the sanctuary. I made ita point to arrive early both morning and evening so I could sit quietly in theempty building to ref lect and marvel that the synagogue continues to live.I recognize that my wife and I are truly blessed to have shared this experiencewith our children and grandchildren. Together we learned lessons of thedanger of excess, lessons of the importance of vision and perseverance andlessons of the eternity of Judaism and the continuity of the Jewish people. The Hillel Day School Emergency Hotline number is 1-888-943-3212. In 1989,several Jewish families were interested in establishing a high qualityJewish day school for their children. They approached the SamuelScheck Hillel Community Day School in North Miami Beach aboutopening a branch of their school in Boca Raton. After months ofhard work, their efforts paid off, and in September 1989, the HillelDay School of Boca Raton opened its doors with 42 students.“Accreditation demonstrates to our students, parents and community that we arefocused on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching learningenvironment, and maintaining an efficientand effective operation staffed by highlyqualified educators,” stated Rabbi Levine. As the school grew, it became evident that responsibilities forthe school needed to be community based. It was decided thatSACS CASI accreditation is recognized the school could most efficiently be pursued as an independentacross state lines, which not only eases the entity, and so Hillel Day School of Boca Raton was born.
