Tenets of Soul Healing Love1. We have all been wounded in some way but blame is not our game. We don’t blame others for ourpain, we use our past to understand ourselves and actions.2. Not dealing with our past will cause us to be unhealthy in many ways. “Not dealing with our pastdestines us to repeat it.”3. God loves us unconditionally and this love heals our soul wounds and restores us to wholeness.4. God’s healing love helps us see ourselves through His eyes, and learn to love ourselves as He does.5. Because we feel loved and loveable, we can allow God’s love and grace to spill out on to others in ourlives. We can see ourselves through God’s eyes as well as seeing others as He does. Love replacesjudgement as we give to others the Soul Healing Love that God has given us.What is a Soul WoundA traumatic, painful event or environment from the past (particularly from childhood because the brain isvery formable in childhood) that creates unmet needs, unhealthy adaptations, negative internal messagesand behavioral patterns that can affect you throughout life if not dealt with. 10Our Unconscious and Conscious ProgrammingOften we respond in ways that baffle even ourselves. We react to people, statements andsituations in ways that are not healthy. As Christians we want to practice the fruits of the Spiritand live Godly, healthy lives but something inside often sabotages us. We can feel like we arebad Christians, not spiritual enough, need to read the Bible more or pray harder and all thewhile we are unaware of the unconscious programming that highjacks us.The Iceberg is frequently used as an illustration to help us understand why this happens. The top of the iceberg is our conscious mind: what we know about ourselves, our beliefs, feelings and attitudes. The bottom of the iceberg which as you can see is much greater, illustrates what we DON’T KNOW about ourselves. The unconscious mind is where ourwounds have programmed us. It is also the more primitive part of the brain often called the oldbrain, child brain, monkey brain or lizard brain because all animals have it. It is not subject toreason or logic so it reacts rather than responds. Reactivity and Interactivity occur as a result. The following are Exercises from the Soul Healing Model that help you identify significantevents in your past that could have caused soul wounds and thus programmed your unconsciousin a negative way. Bringing those events to light also brings them above the water so that youcan re-program your old and new brain with Healthy Godly thought, beliefs and attitudes. On the next page write the significant life events that occurred in each column.Look at the stage and you will see words like attachment, exploration these aredevelopmental tasks that are supposed to be successfully accomplished at those stages. Ifyou were wounded there, chances are you will suffer in those areas as an adult. You willalso see words at the top like Loner/Caretaker circle the one that best describes you today.10

15Developing Soul Healing Goals“You can’t know God until you know yourself.”Based on the information that I listed on my Soul Healogram I have learned or made the following realizationswhich are called BELIEFS (Example: Women are considered equal to men, Marriage is not healthy or typicallyends in divorce, Crazy behavior is normal). This has caused me to react in the following ways which are called ADAPTATIONS (Examples: Feel inferior andnot speak up in front of men, Be disrespectful, forceful or insolent in front of men, Put up with abuse inrelationships.)What I want to see, experience and do differently with God’s help (Example: I and to believe that as a woman Iam beloved by God, I will not tolerate destructive or abusive behavior). With each goal write one practical wayyou are going to achieve it. Use more paper and continue to set these goals in the future.Soul Healing Goals15

18Healing the Soul Master SeriesCourse 3How to Re-Train Your MindBy Drs. Beverly and Tom RodgersDevelopers of The Soul Healing Love Model18

19Re-Programming Negative ThoughtsThere is a difference between the brain and the mind. The brain is the skeleton of the psyche, how it works and operates with neurotransmitters and receptors releasing brain chemicals ona regular basis that course through the blood stream and body. The mind is your thoughts, feelings, beliefs and memories. Both affect each other so changing your thinking from negativeto positive can change your brain chemistry. For example, when you think negative thoughts, your brain releases negative brain chemicals such as adrenalin and cortisol, when you thinkpositive thoughts, your brain releases positive chemicals like serotonin and oxytocin. Positivethinking when done often also changes your mood and eventually your behavior. So practicing INTENIONALITY can change everything about you.The Scripture backs this up:Romans 12:2, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”Philippians 4:8 “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever isright, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent orpraiseworthy--think about such things."Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinks in his heart so is he.” Intentionality is also MINDFULNESSMindfulness is based on awareness.Keeps you in the present momentIs non-judgmental of what you become aware ofInvolves acceptance of what is now with no worry of the past or futureInvolves surrender of your past, present and future to the Lord instead oftrying to doggedly go it alone.19

20God’s Vision of Renewing Your Mind Thoughts: “Take every thought captive to the truth of the Word of God.” 2Corinthians 10:5 Beliefs: “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free”. John 8:32Emotions: “For we know that all things work together for the good of themthat love God.” Romans 8:28 Actions: “Faith without works is dead.” James 1:22Write Below More Scriptures that talk of changing your Thoughts, Beliefs, Emotions andActions20

Which means you are not afraid to ask for help, seek out a therapist, mentor, pastor, support group orother means for your growth and healing.6. You are flexible and adaptable to all of life’s changes.7. You are an actor not a reactor because you know the source of your soul wounds and are activelyworking on healing them.8. 26Know What Emotion is Underneath Your AngerAccording to Psychodynamic Therapy, Anger is not a Primary Emotion, it is a secondary emotion ormore of a reaction to emotions that are much deeper. These deeper emotions are GUILT,INFERIORITY or INADEQUACY, FEAR, TRAUMA (Pain, your feelings are hurt). We chose the wordtrauma because together they are an acronym spelling GIFT, making it easier to remember whenanger is triggered. If you can get in touch with the real emotions underneath you can understandyourself and share what you are feelings without unhealthy anger. The GIFT ExerciseThe following emotions are usually underneath the feelingof anger. Identifying these emotions shows you what is really going oninside of you when you are angry with your spouse. Next time you getangry, share what is really on your heart instead.GuiltInferiorityFearTrauma or PainTaken from the book—Soul Healing Love by Drs. Bev & Tom RodgersThe Digging Deeper ExerciseThis Exercise uses the Gift as the first 2 steps to help you get in touch your trigger, then your deeperemotion. Then you connect your trigger to a past event or environment that is recorded in youramygdala that is causing your reactive anger. You will then list what you do when you are triggered.Lastly you write what you need. The need list in session 1 is listed below so you know what you reallyneed. Often we get triggered and want to resolve a conflict but have no idea what we need. If you don’tknow what you need you cannot resolve your anger or heal conflict in relationships. Answer thefollowing questions. Then on the next page put your triggers and answers in the columns.TRIGGER: What is causing you to feel anger or reactivity.ENOTION: use the GIFT Exercise to determine what is at the root of your anger?PAST OCCURANCE: What happened in your past that this wound is replicating? It can be an eventor environment.REACTION: What do you do when this happens?NEED: What do you really need when this occurs?26

29Forgiveness is the Gift You Give Yourself“Nothing is more precious to God than thanking Him for affliction.”Robert FrostForgiveness gives you freedom, perspective, energy to move on and assurance that your prayers will beanswered.Romans 12:19, says never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God.If revenge is your goal you will need to dig 2 graves.Revenge is like drinking poison and waiting for someone else to die.If God does not protect us from hurt, He will perfect us through it.How do you know you have forgiven? You feel unburdened not vengefulYou let go not ruminating and grudge holdingHealed not heavyGentle not harshPeaceful not depressedGod’s protective care not revengeHumble not holier than thou and pridefulSurrendering not fightingCompassion not callousedYou accept what is not fretting, fixing or fightingLoving not crushed and brokenLight not jealousLess desire for pay back and more desire to just live wellMy Prayer to ForgiveHeavenly Father,Help me to forgive those who have wounded my soul. It feels so unfair but I have hurt you in mydisobedience and you forgive me so how can I do any less. Help me to stop carrying the offense and give itto you. Help me to forgive so you can hear my prayers and forgive me (Matthew 6:14-15). Help me tosurrender my offender into your hands and find peace and freedom, lightness and joy!In Jesus Name, Amen29

30I Asked God I asked God for strength that I might achieve,I was made weak that I might learn to humbly obey.I asked God for health that I might do great things,I was given infirmity that I might do better things.I asked God for riches that I might be happy,I was given poverty that I might be wise.I asked for power that I might have the praise of men,I was given weakness so that I might feel the need for God.I asked for all things that I might enjoy life,I was given life that I might enjoy all things.I got nothing that I asked for, but everything that I had hoped for,I am among all people MOST RICHLY BLESSED.30
