Appendix AICCB-Modified Classification ofInstructional Programs (CIP)

PCS-CIP CODING STRUCTUREICCB uses PCS (Program Classification System) and CIP (Classification of InstructionalPrograms) codes to identify the type/intent of curricula and courses. Every program and courseapproved by ICCB must have an accurate PCS/CIP code assigned to it. This information is usedfor State, Federal and local tracking purposes. The first digit of the PCS code refers to the major programs (objectives) of a postsecondaryinstitution. The major programs have been defined by PCS as:1.02.03.04.0InstructionResearchPublic ServiceAcademic Support5.06.07.08.0Student ServicesInstitutional SupportIndependent OperationsScholarships and FellowshipsThe second number in the code is used to specify subprograms (sub objectives of the programs). The Instruction program (Code 1.0) contains the following subprograms:1.0 General Associate Degrees (AGS, ALS, AGE)1.1 Baccalaureate/Transfer Instruction (AA, AS, AFA, AES)1.2 Career & Technical Instruction1.3 Community Education (noncredit)1.4 Remedial Education1.5 General Studies (noncredit)1.6 Vocational Skills1.7 Adult Basic Education1.8 Adult Secondary Education1.9 English As A Second LanguageThe CIP codes refers to a program category, a classification of similar or related activities bydiscipline area or major function. For instructional programs, the coding of the program categorycorresponds to the standard taxonomy of fields of study used in the Classification of InstructionalPrograms (CIP). Six digits are used to denote specific discipline or occupational areas. In the following example, the PCS indicates the type/intent of the instruction and the CIP indicatesthe program category of reate/Transfer Instruction--Associate in Arts52.1501Career & Technical Instruction--Real Estate51.3801Career & Technical Instruction--Registered NursingThe following ICCB-Modified CIP List is an excerpt from the ICCB MIS Manual. This list shouldbe used for categorizing curriculum; the Generic Course List should be used for classifyingcourses. Contact Tricia Broughton at tricia.broughton@illinois.gov with questions.1
