Our mission is to make ATHENS a place whereacademics and researchers from all over the world meet to discuss thedevelopments of their discipline and present their work. To serve thispurpose, conferences are organized along the lines of well establishedand well defined scientific disciplines. In addition, interdisciplinaryconferences are also organized because they serve the missionstatement of the Institute. Since 1995, ATINER has organized more than150 international conferences and has published over 100 books.Academically, the Institute is organized into six research divisions andtwenty-seven research units. Each research unit organizes at least oneannual conference and undertakes various small and large researchprojects.I would like to thank all the participants, the members of theorganizing and academic committee and most importantly theadministration staff of ATINER for putting this conference together.Gregory T. 1st Annual International Conference on Demography and Population Studies, 16-19 June, Athens, Greece:Abstract BookMaurizio AvolaAssistant Professor, University of Catania, ItalyTrade-off between Employment and Job Quality:Ethnic Penalty in Italian Regional Labour MarketsThe analysis of the institutional characteristics of host societies, including structure and regulation of the labour market, has becomeincreasingly important to explain the processes of reception andintegration of immigrants (Reitz, 2002; Kogan, 2007; Pichler, 2011;Reyneri and Fullin, 2011). The Italian case is particularly interestingfrom this point of view. The economic and occupational imbalancescharacterizing the country, in fact, has historically represented thebackground within which the size and profile of immigrants labourinsertion was territorially differentiated, in terms of diffusion of thepresence, employment opportunities, distribution by sectors andoccupations, working conditions (Ambrosini, 2001; Pugliese, 2002;Ministero dell’Interno, 2007; Istat, 2008; Strozza, Forcellati, Ferrara,2008; Avola, 2009; 2012; Reyneri, 2011). The paper aims to contribute tothe debate by proposing an analysis that from these regional differenceswill deepen the consequences from the point of view of the relationshipof the occupational performances between immigrants and natives, referring in particular to the size and structure of the ethnic penalty(Heath and Cheung, 2007).Using Italian Labour Force Survey from 2005 (the first yearavailable), we will propose a multivariate analysis on employmentcondition and occupational attainment distinguishing the performanceof immigrants and natives in the regional labour markets (controlled forsocio-biographic characteristics). The results show that in an territorialperspective, regional and macro-regional, the labour market integrationof immigrants appears to be characterized by a significant trade-offbetween employment opportunities and job quality. It’s a finding thatconfirms the results of recent comparative analysis between old andnew immigration countries in Western Europe (Reyneri and Fullin,2008; 2011), and which provides important insights for the definition ofthe Southern European model of immigrants labour market integration(King, 2000; King and Ribas-Mateos, 2002; Baganha, 2009; Peixoto et al.,2012).13

1st Annual International Conference on Demography and Population Studies, 16-19 June, Athens, Greece:Abstract BookSonia Edith ColantonioResearcher, CONICET & National University of Cordoba, ArgentinaDora Estela CeltonResearcher, CONICET & National University of Cordoba, Argentina&Andres Conrado PeranovichResearcher, CONICET & National University of Cordoba, ArgentinaDemographic Transition in ArgentinaDemographic transition, epidemiological transition, changes inpopulation. And these changes in the living conditions of thepopulation of Argentina in the last hundred years allow us to estimatethat a girl born this year may have an average life of 79 years, almostdouble of a girl born a hundred years ago. What factors led to this gainin life expectancy in Argentina? Who were the main beneficiaries? Howthese changes occurred?Argentina is in an advanced stage of the Demographic Transitionthat began in the late nineteenth century, when mortality and fertilityrates decreased with the simultaneous arrival of mass immigrationform overseas. The significant decline in mortality that preceded thefertility led to an increase in life expectancy at birth, close to 33 years inthe late nineteenth century to 48.5 in 1914.Changes in patterns of reproductive behavior and the production ofhealth policies generated effects on fertility and mortality in thepopulation. Alongside, these factors were associated with cultural andsocial behaviors that had significant impact on the family environment. In recent years, Argentina is moving towards what is called seconddemographic transition characterized by the decline in marriage andincrease in domestic partnerships and divorces, major changes in thestructure of families and changes in reproductive patterns. In this document the evolution of mortality, fertility and lifeexpectancy at birth is presented: the change in these indicators allow usto observe, over time, the changes occurred during much of thetwentieth century and its main effects such as an aging population andchanges in families.14
