Gold Wing Road Riders Association Virginia District Chapter C NewsletterSusan BerryValentine’s Day is upon us, a time to show how much we love and appreciate our lovedones. One of the ways that we can show them how much we love them is to ridesafely, wear all the gear all the time, and maintain our motorcycles, trikes, spiders, whatever you ride in good riding condition. We also need to keep our brains sharp, not be angry or upset about anything when wehead out on a ride. We should have clear heads and clear minds so we can concentrateon riding. We as a group need to think about what kind of classes we need to brush upon. We have trainers available to teach and refresh our group on any aspect ofmotorcycling that we need. The District team is there to help us and if you have anywants or needs for any training please speak up. Think about what you might want tobe trained on and at the ride meeting we will be asking you if there are any classes thatyou would like to have done for the chapter. There are all kinds of classes that you cantake; trailering, road captain classes, CPR, mature rider class, advanced riding, curvyroads and hills, group riding, and lots of others, this is just a sample of what isavailable, if you are interested, please let me know and we can get the classes set upfor the group. We can always use a refresher course and besides there will probably be some kind offood involved! So please think about it and let me know.SusanBack to TopGWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February 20223

Gold Wing Road Riders Association Virginia District Chapter C NewsletterHow to test and Adjust your Rear Shock on GL1800found on the Internet by Daniel C. PittsChapter Newsletter Editor and MemberAs I ‘surf’ the internet, I am always on the lookout for different problems and solutions for bikes. Ifound this on a web site I frequent often and decided I would test my rear actuator on my own bike. Idiscovered that the change in sound started between 8 and 9. I have also learned that this is ‘normal’for many of the GL1800 bikes. I called Honda and discovered that this would not be covered underwarranty due to the fact it was not leaking, so I took it upon myself to fix what I felt to be a problemwith my rear suspension. Below are the instructions I used and successfully obtained the desiredsound pitch change for the rear actuator on my own bike. The below instructions are in no way meantto have you accomplish this work on your own bike and void the warranty. This information is beinggiven as I feel it is an overlooked aspect of the GL1800 suspension. The below instructions took meapproximately 1 ½ hours from start to finish. To Test the Actuator1) Place the bike on the center stand.2) Turn the ignition to accessory.3) Lower the pre-set to "O".4) Now raise the Pre-Set and listen for a sound pitch change from the Actuator. (Standing on the Rightside of the bike, listening at the front of the saddlebag). The actuator is right behind the black plasticpiece with a hole in it that is attached to the side-cover.5) When you hear the sound pitch change release the pre-set button, and look at the Display to seewhere the Actuator starts to add fluid through the hose to the Shock Pre-Loader.6) If your settings are anything above 0-1.Then there is air in the system and it needs to be properlyrefilled (See Directions below to properly re-fill the actuator)To refill the actuator.1) Place the bike on center stand.2) Turn the ignition key to Accessory and lower your presets to "0'.3) Remove the seat and side covers.4) Remove the rear fender.5) Remove the three bolts inside the right saddlebag.6) Remove the bolt on the outside upper right of the saddlebag to the frame.7) Now tilt out the bottom of the saddlebag and let it rest there-You do not have to disconnect anythingfurther!8 ) Now remove the 2-12mm & 1-10mm bolts from the Actuator securing it to the frame.9) Now with a pair of needle nosed pliers-squeeze the push in cable holder for the Grey connector.10) Now you can remove the other connector from the Actuator.GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February 20227

Gold Wing Road Riders Association Virginia District Chapter C Newsletter11) Now using brake clean, spray the area at the banjo bolt/hose so it is clean-You'll be making markson it there!.12) Now with a sharpie-make a dot on the top of the banjo "Fitting". So you'll know which end is uplater on!13) Now make a small line right under the dot you just made to the actuator body. What you are doinghere is marking the Orientation of the banjo fitting to the actuator body! Making Sure you put it backin the same place-this is Important so the hose doesn't get kinked when the actuator is bolted back onthe frame later!!14) Now you can remove the 10mm banjo bolt from the hose.15) Either with a helper or duct/masking tape-try and keep that end of the hose as high as you can sofluid doesn't drain out of it while you continue to the next step. (I run the tape up from the hose to thetruck if working by myself!) This keeps the hose out of my way for the time being.16) Now with a thin screwdriver, insert it into the banjo bolt hole in the actuator, and push the sealpiston down with a little pressure until it bottoms out. If you feel or hear it move? Then try to push itdown again until it stays down! You're trying to fill as much of the actuator reservoir as possible here!17) Now you are ready to refill the actuator. It only takes a couple ounces to top it off.18 ) Once you have it topped off, now replace the hose according to the marks you made earlier.19) Now before you bolt it back on-"Test it first"20) Plug both connectors back in the actuator, an start the bike.21) Listen for a "Sound" pitch change as you add presets. Once you hear it change sound-Let thebutton go, and look at the dash-If it's at "0" then you are done. If it’s at 1 or more, repeat the last stepsto add a tad more fluid.Your goal is to hear a sound change at 0-1.Back to TopGWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February 20228
