Provided by theNYU Post-Graduate Medical SchoolNYU’s 2017ADVANCED IMAGING OF THEMUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEMWITH AN EMPHASIS ON SPORTS INJURIESMay 22–24, 2017BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!Optional Hands-on MSKUltrasound WorkshopMay 25, 2017Interactive Case-Based Learning SessionsNationally recognized experts in the field will display interesting theme-basedunknown cases which will be used to highlight important teaching points.Course DescriptionGuest Speakers to Include: Robert D. Boutin, MD; Christine B. Chung, MD; Mark D. Murphey, MD;William E. Palmer, MD; Mini N. Pathria, MD; Donald L. Resnick, MD; David A. Rubin, MD;Michael J. Tuite, MD; Lawrence M. White, MDThis conference will offer a unique and innovative programincluding traditional lecture sessions and interactive casebased learning sessions. Lecture topics to be covered willinclude common sports specific injuries, nerve imaging, bone tumors, imagingof arthritis and cartilage, and pediatric imaging. The concluding session of thecourse will take the form of a quiz panel, where we will attempt to “stump thestars”. A prize will be awarded to the attendee who submits the most correctdiagnoses for the quiz cases.Learning ObjectivesAfter participating in this activity, clinicians should be able to: Determine how best to modify imaging techniques and protocols for allareas of Musculoskeletal MRI including: hip, knee, shoulder and foot, forimproved therapeutic decision making. Develop strategies to adapt their imaging techniques to the pediatric population and recognize common patterns of injury in this population. Evaluate the latest technology, focusing on magnetic resonance and theincreasing importance of ultrasound in order to apply this technology toeveryday practice. Describe safety factors as they pertain to the use of high field MRI in musculoskeletal imaging.Interactive Case-Based Learning SessionsBack by popular demand from last year, interspersed with the didactic lectures,we will be offering concentrated case-based learning sessions with smallergroups offering a more intimate learning environment. Areas to be coveredwill include: knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, muscle, tumors, and post-op imaging. Nationally recognized experts in the field willdisplay interesting theme-based unknown cases which will be used to highlight important teaching points. Attendees will have the opportunity to reviewthese cases on their laptops during the sessions. Questions from the audiencewill be encouraged. Please note, personal laptops are recommended (but not required) for the interactive sessions.Hands-on MSK Ultrasound WorkshopEnrollment limited to 36 attendeesThis hands-on workshop will include 5 rotating workstations divided by anatomic region (shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, foot/ankle) and a 6th station dedicated to demonstration of interventional techniques. The instructors in eacharea will give a brief demonstration of the proper technique for evaluation oftheir assigned anatomy, followed by the opportunity for the participants topractice their newly acquired skills upon a volunteer or model. Participants atthe interventional station will have the opportunity to practice needle guidance techniques utilizing ultrasound guidance and cadaveric specimens.

There has been tremendous growthin the field of radiology and in the area of musculoskeletal imaging in particular, making it mandatory for radiologists, both in academic and privatepractice settings, to continually update their skills and complement theirknowledge base. Maintenance of certification also requires radiologists tostay current with new advances in the field. With the growth of radiologyand the increasing importance it plays both in the diagnosis and treatmentof diseases in the musculoskeletal system, it has also become imperativefor practicing orthopedists and practitioners of physical medicine and rehabilitation to have a basic understanding of imaging and how it can best beused in service of the patient.
