La Salle SchoolNovember 2017Administrators’ MessageDear Parents and StudentsOctober has been a very eventful month full of interesting and engagingopportunities for many of our students and staff. The month of November promisesto be equally busy, full of academic, athletic and musical endeavours. Pleaserefer to our calendar which keeps all of us informed.Inside this issue:Learning Buddies23/4 Habitats3Drama & Library4Gym5Math Game7OT9Calendar12We would like to take this opportunity to remind our school community of ourupcoming reporting process. Our first report cards for this school year will go homeon Monday, November 20th. We encourage families to review their young person’slearning prior to conferencing with the classroom teacher. Our staff continues towork at clearly communicating each student’s progress with the goal that studentsand parents understand their strengths, challenges and next steps required to growas a learner. Report cards should provide opportunities to celebrate studentachievement and inspire more learning. We look forward to seeing all parents/guardians at our Oral Reports and hopethat everyone is able to schedule a time on either the evening of Thursday Nov.23rd or Friday morning on Nov. 24th.As a school team we wanted to highlight that one of our main goals this year is tofocus on improving student comprehension through writing to learn and writing forpurpose. For the most part, students will demonstrate this via work with non-fictiontext across numerous curricular areas. This focus is based on research that indicatesreading and writing do not work in isolation but work together and mutuallybenefit one another (reading can help writing and writing can help reading). We are continuously working at supporting an inclusive and collaborative culturebetween students, staff and parents.Robert BouchardJayson AbrahamPrincipalVice PrincipalMiddle Years Choir had theprivilege of singing O’ Canada atthe Manitoba Moose game onFriday October 27, 2017.They did an amazing job!!!

La Salle School, November 2017Page 2Learning Buddies (by 3/4C)At La Salle School we have learning buddies. Learning buddies are when two classes partner up to do differentactivities together. Usually these classes are more than 2 years apart! Here are the different learning buddies; K2 and 3/4W, K1 and 3/4P, 1/2N and 5/6W, 5/6H and 1/2B,5/6M and 1/2P, 3/4C and 7/8G, 3/4CH and 7/8S, 1/2H and 7/8F.Some activities we’ve done with our book buddies (7/8G) are animal food chain art, reading and practicing our puppet plays. We usually do an activity about what we are learning!“Learning buddies are very helpful!” – Andrew S.“Learning Buddies make reading more fun.” –Hugh B.“7/8G is very nice to work with.” –Jake J.3/4C African SavannahThe Grade 3/4 classes learned about habitats in science. Over the last month ourclass researched different habitats. After we had a chance to learn about some different habitats we voted on which habitat we wanted to turn our room into! Wevoted on the African Savannah (grasslands). We learned things about African animals like antelope, monkeys, lions, crocodiles, giraffes, hippos and many more. Did you know cheetah’s are the fastest land animal in the world?!?! Wealso learned about African plants! We learned about a special type of tree called the baobob! After we chose our habitat we wrote puppet plays that took place in the African Savannah. Our two playswere called, “Lifecycle” and “The Little Monkey and the Baobob Tree”. Ms. Young, our divisional drama teacher, came in to help us. We also turned our classroom into the African Savannah! Our classroom had many animals, streamers for grass and even an animal watering hole!We loved our habitats!“It was very cool.” – Boston Z.“Our classroom looked really cool after it was all done!” – Olivia M.“Our classroom looked way different after it was transformed!” – Callie H.“I liked it a lot because we took puppet plays and made them African theme!” –Jane A.

La Salle School, November 2017Page 3Animal AdaptionsAnimal’s adaptions are their strengths that help them survive inIn three four Wiens we turned our classroom in their habitats. Animals adapt to their habitats to hide from theirpredator and hunt their prey. Our class picked an animal and reto the arctic. Everyone got a chance to bring insearched it with its habitat. We researched and wrote it down thensupplies for a snow bank, a polar bear den, icedrew a picture. After we were done we switched their habitat andfloes, and lots of posters. We took stuffed animals such as seals, polar bears, snowy owls, and wrote what they would need to survive, the adaptation they wouldarctic hares. We did not have any plants because need for survival. For example a polar bear needs white fur toplants don’t grow in the arctic a lot. Most of the camouflage so their prey cannot see them coming. They also havegrippy paws so they don’t slip on the ice. If the polar bear movedanimals there are predators and they also haveto the rainforest it would need to get rid of its white fur or it wouldblubber such as seals, polar bears and manybe an easy target. It would alsomore. Some of our class worked on researchneed to lose its blubber so it wouldn’twhile the rest created the class room. And webe super hot.put on puppet plays with unique puppets.Woodland Habitat (By 3/4P)We turned our class into the Arctichabitat. We had to make a Snowbank and ice floes. We also madethe ocean and two puppet shows. We made snow flakes. We includedthe Arctic hare, the polar bear, thesnowy owl, the seal, killer whale, arctic fox and narwhal. There are verylittle plants in the arctic except forseaweed in the ocean and some smallshrubs. We wanted people to learn some new information aboutthe animals in the arctic. As part of our Science unit on Habitats, 3/4P transformed our classroom into a woodland forest! Students brought in many items they had found at their cabins, on campingtrips, or around their homes. We had an entire display table showcasing these items:deer, elk and moose antlers, wasp nests, fish teeth and a turtle shell! The students decided to divide the room into four sections, to represent the four seasonsin a forest. We painted trees with our learning buddies, made fallen logs, created asnow-covered bear cave, a snake den, nests, and a pond.We also had the chance to work with the Drama Teacher, Ms.Young, to present two educational puppet plays to parents, andthe other early years classes.Special thanks to all the parents who sent in supplies and to Ms. Young for helping us puton a great show!

La Salle School, November 2017Page 4Over the past 4 weeks, the Grade 3/4 classes have had the opportunity to work with the divisional Drama consultant, Ms. Young. Ms. Young worked with students to create and perform educational puppet plays related to their habitat of study. One way is to think about the numbers as making an array. An array of 3 rows with 4 stamps in each is 12 stamps; 3 x 4 12Knowing how to use an array to multiply small numbers will help students as they learn to multiply largernumbers. Using base-ten blocks to model this multiplication will help them as they learn to understand anduse the traditional algorithm.IN FLANDERS FIELDS POEMBy Lieutenant Colonel John McCraeIn Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place: and in the skyThe larks still bravely singing flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead: Short days ago,We lived, felt dawn, saw sunsetglow,Loved and were loved: and now welieIn Flanders fields!Take up our quarrel with the foeTo you, from failing hands, we throwThe torch: be yours to hold it highIf ye break faith with us who die,We shall not sleep, though poppiesgrowIn Flanders fieldsNovember Oral ConferenceThursday November 23 3:50pm - 8:30 pm&Friday November 24 9:00am - 11:00 amgo towww.lasalle.schoolappointments.com(link is on our website)Registration opens Wednesday November 1 @9:00am
