Introduction La Salle College High School has planned and unified a style guide identification program to reinforce immediate and positive recognition for its faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, volunteers, and the general public. The guide specifies the visual standards for La Salle College High School and demonstrates their application to a wide range of materials that are used in our institution. One of the most important aspects of this program is the continuity and consistency it provides for the development of the Institution’s visual expressions. The program enhances the presentation of our school and its services. We also achieve a more efficient use of communications dollars through planned applications. The continued success of this communications program relies upon the understanding, cooperation, and active support of all those responsible for its implementation. To obtain additional copies of the La Salle College High School Style and Identity Guide or if questions arise about the applications of the visual system, please contact Christopher Carabello at 215.233.2350, ext. 3071 or carabello@lschs.org. Mission La Salle College High School is a private, independent Catholic college preparatory school for young men of varied backgrounds and abilities. La Salle is dedicated to providing a challenging and nurturing environment for learning, inspired by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, and carried out by a devoted and skilled community of Brothers of the Christian Schools and lay educators. In the tradition of the Christian Brothers, La Salle empowers each student to accept responsibility and achieve his fullest potential. La Salle is committed to Christian values, academic excellence, spiritual fulfillment, cultural enrichment, and physical development. The Lasallian experience prepares young men who are dedicated to leadership, achievement, and service in building a society that is at once more human, more Christ-like, and more just. 4

Message Inspired by three centuries of the distinctive spirituality of the Christian Brothers, La Salle educates the whole person, developing young men in their unique talents and strengths. A core program balances academics, athletics, the arts, and community service. An academically diverse student body discovers an independence of thought and action that promotes a sense of individual responsibility. Mentors as well as educators, La Salle’s dedicated teachers drive a challenging and innovative curriculum. The Lasallian commitment to rigorous learning results in rankings of National Merit and AP Scholars that are in the top tier among regional independent schools and an impressive list of college admissions. Nationally recognized technology and music programs and impressive campus facilities enhance La Salle’s demanding academic program. La Salle students voluntarily and overwhelmingly heed the call to community service. All students participate in a broad and robust service program. They follow the dedication of the Brothers to bring creative and generous responses to the world of the poor today and to become leaders for a future of complex challenges. 7

History The coat-of-arms for the House of Salla was first displayed in the County of Urgel, in Catalonia, Spain, where the family patriarch, Johan Salla, was the warrior chief of Alphonsus the Chaste, King of Oviedo. Together they expelled the Moors from Urgel. The broken legs that Johan Salla sustained during combat as he fought side-by-side with his King are the origin of the broken chevrons of gold on a field of azure (blue) in the Salla Family coat-of-arms. In the thirteenth century, the Salla Family migrated to the Basque province in the south of France, and although their name became French (De La Salle), they retained “SALLA” as their battle cry. The family later migrated to Rheims, France, the birthplace of St. John Baptist de La Salle. 8

La Salle College High School – History Evolution The Signature of La Salle College High School The signature of La Salle College High School is derived from the seal (or emblem), which is a fundamental identifier of the school. At the center of the seal rests the crest (or coat-of-arms) of La Salle College High School. The top of the crest contains a battle helmet representing the family of St. John Baptist de La Salle and their warrior heritage from Spain. The bottom features the Latin motto Virtus Scientia, meaning Virtue and Knowledge, along with 1858, the year in which La Salle College High School was founded by the Christian Brothers at St. Michael parish in North Philadelphia. The center of the crest bears the quartered shield. The shield is divided by a cross, the core of all Christian symbols, and a statement to the school’s adherence to Catholic values and traditions, which are embodied in the teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers. In the upper right hand corner is the star of faith of the Christian Brothers, which signifies the faith the school seeks to foster in its students. The lower right hand corner holds a single fracted chevron. The fracted (or broken) chevron has been used over the centuries by followers of St. John Baptist de La Salle to evoke his memory. The coat of arms of the De La Salle Family portrays three such chevrons of gold on a field of blue. The signature of La Salle College High School consists of a mark and typography. The mark is the quartered shield, which for decades has remained in the forefront of Lasallian symbols. The typography features Bodoni BE Condensed, a serif font that complements the mark. The signature retains the traditional La Salle Colors of Blue and Gold, which stem from the original coat-of-arms of the De La Salle Family. 9

Basic Standards The La Salle College High School visual guidelines consist of specific graphic components: the La Salle College High School signature and symbol, a color palette, and a typographic system. The correct application of the La Salle College High School signature and its interaction with other elements is critical to achieving an effective and distinctive program. Each of these components, and its correct use, is explained and illustrated in this section. The subdirectories labeled a lschs signature and b lschs symbol on the accompanying disk contain the La Salle College High School signature and symbol. These documents are locked and cannot be changed. The files are to be copied to your hard drive before use. La Salle College High School – Basic Standards Signature The subdirectory labeled a lschs signature on the accompanying disk contains the La Salle College High School signature Illustrated below. Files were saved in the following formats, to be applied to the applications specified: .tif bitmap image, high resolution – 300dpi. May be used for printing. .eps vector-based image (can be opened in Adobe Illustrator ), high resolution – 300dpi. May be used for printing and/or re-sizing. .bmp bitmap image, medium resolution – 150dpi. May be use for Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. .jpg bitmap image, high resolution/small file size – 300dpi. May be used for transferring signature over the internet. May be used for printing after it is converted from an RGB to CMYK mode (converting files can be performed in Adobe Photoshop ). .gif bitmap image, low resolution – 72dpi. Used for web pages and similar internet applications. The La Salle College High School signature is the key graphic element of our identification. It is important that its use be controlled in all applications. As shown on this page, the La Salle College High School signature is the unique combination of the name “La Salle College High School” and the La Salle College High School symbol, positioned to the left of the word “La Salle College High School”. This is the preferred configuration of the signature. Since the artwork for the signature is supplied digitally, the relative distance and proportion of the symbol to the name remain the same. In two-or-more color applications, the word “La Salle” should be printed in La Salle College High School Gold (PMS 871), the word “College High School” should be printed in La Salle College High School Blue (PMS 288). The La Salle College High School symbol should be printed in La Salle College High School Blue (PMS 288). In single-color applications, it is preferred that the La Salle College High School signature be printed in La Salle College High School Blue (PMS 288) or Gold (PMS 871), black, or reversed out of a color field to white. In reverse applications, the background color chosen should provide sufficient contrast to the signature. The artwork below was created in Adobe Illustrator CS2. 12

La Salle College High School – Basic Standards Symbol The subdirectory labeled b lschs symbol on the accompanying disk contains the La Salle College High School symbol Illustrated below. There may be applications in which the La Salle College High School symbol alone denotes the School. In these cases, care must be taken to preserve the integrity of the marque – even though the artwork is supplied digitally. No attempt should be made to distort the horizontal and vertical proportions of the symbol. It must not be angled, superimposed over other school symbols or employed in close proximity to other symbols or the names or logotypes not affiliated with La Salle College High School. When used in two-or-more color applications, the La Salle College High School symbol should be printed in La Salle College High School Blue (PMS 288). In single-color applications, it is preferred that the La Salle College High School symbol be printed in La Salle College High School Blue (PMS 288) or Gold (PMS 871), black, or reversed out of a color field to white, in reverse applications, the background color chosen should provide sufficient contrast to the symbol. The artwork below was created in Adobe Illustrator CS2. 13

La Salle College High School – Basic Standards Spacing The signature should always be surrounded by an open space in all applications, as illustrated below. A minimum distance of one-quarter the height of the “La Salle” name must be allowed above, below and on the sides of the signature. Maintaining this space will ensure that the signature is not crowded or linked to other graphic elements. X 14

La Salle College High School – Basic Standards Applying the Signature These guidelines must be followed in order to maintain the visual integrity of the La Salle College High School signature. Do not alter the signature in any way. Do not distort the signature. Do not use out-of-focus or poor quality artwork to reproduce the signature. Do not use the signature in the context of a sentence or headline. Do not apply the signature to visually competitive backgrounds. Do not use the signature in situations that diminish its contrast. Do not confine the signature within shapes (e.g., circle, rectangle, oval, etc.) Do not use in close proximity to other logotypes or graphic elements. 15

La Salle College High School – Basic Standards Nomenclature Office of the Principal Men of LaSalle Alumni Association Treatments of La Salle College High signature and services are illustrated below. The nomenclature type should always be set horizontal and align to the left side of the page. The font should be set in Bodoni BE Condensed. 16

La Salle College High School – Basic Standards Color Palette The colors shown on this page and throughout this manual are not intended to match the Pantone Matching System (PMS). The Pantone Matching System is displayed in editions of the Pantone Color Reference Manuals, available from Pantone, Inc. Color is a powerful visual tool. Like the La Salle College High School signature, color provides a strong means of visual recognition. There are, essentially, two La Salle College High School colors – La Salle College High School Blue (PMS 288) and La Salle College High School Gold (PMS 288). In multi-color applications, these are the only permissible PMS colors to use. However, the use of an all black or an all-white reverse of the signature are also permitted. To ensure color consistency, attach the appropriate La Salle color samples to all artwork. Matching these colors in four-color process may not be exact but should be visually matched as closely as possible. The colors shown on this page and throughout this manual are not intended to match the Pantone Matching System (PMS). The Pantone Matching System is displayed in editions of the Pantone Color Reference Manuals, available from Pantone, Inc.
