1IntroductionThe Department of Microbiology at Jinnah University for Women has been established in theyear 1998. It offers a profound and entrenched career to the young women accordingly providesopportunity to contribute in the field of Microbiology. In compliance with BS and MS program,PhD program is now also on track. It encompasses highly devoted and motivated facultymembers. The Department provides extremely thought-provoking environment where researchprofessionals and students work together on the latest research projects. Significant instruments,latest equipment’s and facilities provide a wide range of support services to the graduates andpostgraduate students. The Department conducts training programs, seminars and workshopswhich enable students to apply what they have erudite to practical situations. The Department ofMicrobiology is committed to a highly interactive atmosphere where students and facultyflourish.Microbiology is the most relevant, dynamic and exciting disciplines in the biological andmolecular sciences that deals with microscopically small living organisms. Microbiology hasbecome an umbrella term that cover up many field of studies for instance medical, molecular,veterinary, industrial, environmental, parasitology, mycology, bacteriology, virology andnumerous other. An understanding of microbiology concerning with the environment hasfashioned other sub disciplines including microbial ecology, microbial physiology, microbialgenetics and molecular biology. Microbiology has benefited enormously in improving healthcare, medical and allied health sciences for the welfare of mankind.2Criterion 1: Program Mission, Objectives and Outcomes2.1VISIONThe Department of Microbiology vision is to produce highly trained and skilled leaders in allarea of Microbiology, to foster and provide a robust research programme that supplement ournational requirements and to develop as breeding ground of distinction and information andknowledge in the all fields of Microbiology.2.2MissionThe Department of Microbiology mission provides good quality Microbiology education and toprovide the inspirational trained scientist in Microbiology for vibrant teaching in Science thatreinforces the application of scientific principles to the fields of Clinical Microbiology,Immunology, Toxicology, Immunohematology, Virology, Parasitology, Bacteriology,Physiology, Food and Industrial Microbiology, and, stimulates cross-departmental collaborationin teaching and research. The Department of Microbiology endeavors to enhance science ofMicrobiology through excellence in recognized research and dissemination of knowledge notonly nationally and internationally. 4Criterion 3: Laboratories and Computing FacilitiesDepartment is equipped with Computer Lab., with internet and digital library facilities.5Criterion 4: Students support and Guidance 5.1Student Advisory committee is formed for any kind of student affairs; the universityencourages all the girls to take part in the extra-curricular activities. In this connection,various competitions namely debate, Naat, Sports etc. are held regularly. For all types ofsports activities, a sports room is maintained by the university. Besides Almost everydepartment has departmental societies for various departmental activities.Each course is usually taught by a single faculty member.Lab Technician & Attendant assists the students during Practical classes.Student GuidanceStudents upon joining the department are given an orientation where in students are briefed aboutthe rules and regulations, policies about degree Program, Semester System, Examination Policy,with-drawl condition, cheating and plagiarism penalties etc.6Criterion 5: Process Control6.1Eligibility CriteriaFor BS Minimum 55% marks in H.S.C (pre medical) for biological subjects.6.2Selection & Admission ProcedureStudents are selected on merit basis. Applications of students having highest marks are givenpriority. Entry test is conducted for the students who qualify the required eligibility. Then interview is conducted for students who cleared the entry test.7Criterion 6: Faculty7.1IntroductionPermanent and visiting Faculty members are appointed by the Selection Board following theguidelines of the HEC of Pakistan.5

8Criterion 7: Institutional Facilities8.1Facilities:Jinnah University for Women is located at the very prime location.8.2Internet Facility:Throughout the week fastest internet facility is provided in the students’ computer Labs8.3Library:Library Committee is established at JUW which has its policies, Rules and regulations. Morethan 2000 books, Research journals, Magazines related life science are placed. The library has itsown database named JLMS (Jinnah Library Management System). This Database has beendesigned by "IT Department" of the Jinnah University on SQL server 2000.Main Library is comprised of six sections:1. Acquisition section2. Circulation section3. Reference section (for Arts and Science)4. Computer Lab (for Students and Faculty Members)5. Newspaper and Magazines section6. Digital Library8.4Student’s common Room:Two Common rooms are available for the students.8.5Transport Facility:A fleet of Buses/Vans are available who pick and drop the students from HUB Chowki(Baluchistan) to Steel Town. Students from all over Karachi are facilitated by University’s ownTransport.Due to the ideal location of the University, public transport is available at door step.8.6BankBank booth facility is available inside the campus for faculty and students. Students’ fee iscollected during the allocated time at the bank counter. Students are advised to pay fees throughpay orders. ATM facility exists also. After Bank hours the collection of fee is done byUniversity account section to facilitate the students.8.7Canteen, Book Shop, Photostat ShopA neat and clean canteen furnished with proper furniture provides snacks, drinks and othereatables under hygienic conditions. Company packed eatable items are also available from a7

shop located at the campus. Qualities of food stuff are regularly monitored by a committee ofthree senior faculty members. Beside this two Photostat shop facility at concessional rates arealso available by the University near main Library and near university’s main gate.8.8Medical UnitJUW has a three bad dispensary with extremely well trained and cooperative medical staff.A number of health care facilities provided for immediate treatment given to someone sufferingfrom an injury or illness like dizziness, or any other minor illness. Measures are also taken toprevent hazards that could result in a serious and sudden injury or illness during conduction oflaboratories that would require not only immediate first aid but also further assessment ortreatment in an emergency.The aim of medical unit at JUW is to: Give First Aid and serious conditional patients aretransformed to nearest hospital immediately.All medicines and equipment needed to relieve from illnesses/injury are available for effectivetreatment. The medical unit staff ensures that each patient should be treated at the earliest andwhen they leave the recovery room or medical unit they have been treated/ cured. The medicalunit provides a clean, hygienic, friendly environment so that the patients recover as early aspossible.8.9Sports at JUWTo promote physical activities and healthy environment, students play indoor (card games, boardgames; table tennis, carom) and outdoor games (tennis, badminton, cricket, athletics, basketball,throw ball, volleyball) in their free time. A qualified sports instructor and Assistant Instructor arepresent to guide and train the students for different types of interdepartmental tournaments.The Sports Club organizes annual sports festival/gala in every fall semester. Students from allfaculties (Science, Arts, Business Administration & Commerce and Pharmacy) show keeninterest and take active part in the different games of the festival.8.10Media CellA media cell at the campus functions under the supervision of learned Professors. It keeps watchof the curricular and co-curricular activities of the university and maintains cordial relations withthe print and electronic media. The media cell publishes a News Letter, which is sent to differentuniversities and relevant organization.8.11Radio StationJinnah University for Women hat its own radio station which has live Broadcasting from 11:00am to 1:00 pm8
