Laminar Seal RingsA Smalley Laminar Seal Ring set is a metallic labyrinth sealconsisting of multiple rings in a groove. The arrangementand the specific orientation of the rings are dictated by theapplication and the severity of the environment. There are16 series of standard imperial and Metric Laminar Seal Ringconfigurations from which to select. 8 of these series aresets consisting of single-turn rings. The other 8 series aresets consisting of double-turn rings. Within each series areoperational ring-set configurations in both imperial andmetric sizes. The selection of the appropriate set should bedetermined by the application. For some applications a complete labyrinth configuration(i.e.; a complete labyrinth configuration is one which hasrings staggered within the set) is necessary due to a severeenvironment where contamination is highly probable. Inother applications design engineers can keep the groovedimensions minimal by specifying laminar sets with ringsclinging either to the bore or to the shaft.Laminar Seal RingsAvailable From StockAdvantages ofLaminar Seal Rings No friction with other rotating components, ideal for highspeed applications. Prevent dirt and splash water from contaminatingcomponents. When used in conjunction with other seals, Laminar Sealsprovide a primary seal against severe contamination, before the contaminants come in contact with thesecondary seal. Sets of multiple rings provide an efficient labyrinth seal. Rings may be produced from a wide variety of alloysto withstand more severe conditions including highertemperatures and corrosive environments. As a metallic mechanical seal they can outperform rubberseals in durability and life expectancy. The change from rubber to metal reduces the need forfrequent seal replacement.Standard parts from 5/8’’ to 50’’ and 15 mm to 1,300 mm.Special seals manufactured with No-Tooling-Charges.Smalley’s Laminar Seal Rings are interchangeable withFEY Rings.INTERCHANGE DQSDISDQSKDISKDFK3FK6CONSULT SMALLEY ENGINEERING FK5Manufactured in USASmalley (847) 719-5900 103

Laminar Seal RingsSelection GuideStandard Laminar Ring Sets AvailableSingle -Turn LaminarSeal RingsUsed in a variety of applications, this series of Seal Ringsshould be utilized for light to medium duty applications, dependent on the ring configuration specified. The setsare comprised of single-turn rings in either 3 rings per setor 5 rings per set.APPLICATIONS: 3 ring sets protect components from lowdirt and low splash water contamination. 5 ring sets providea better labyrinth seal to protect components from mediumdirt and medium splash water contamination.Double -Turn LaminarSeal RingsThe sets are comprised of double-turn rings in either 2 ringsper set or 3 rings per set. The double-turn rings fit tighter inthe bore or on the shaft, provide complete 360 surfacecontact and resist higher axial/radial forces than single-turnring sets, for medium to heavy duty applications.APPLICATIONS: 2 ring sets protect components frommedium dirt and medium splash water contamination. 3 ringsets provide a better labyrinth seal to protect componentsfrom heavy dirt and heavy splash water contamination.104smalley.comNo-Tooling-Charges For Customs

Laminar Seal Ring ApplicationsA. CouplingB. Bearing ProtectionC. Pulley IdlerD. High Speed SpindleA. CouplingThe seal arrangement in thisassembly has been customdesigned for optimum protectionagainst contamination. Gasesbuild up pressure in a centercavity, protected on both endsfrom contaminants entering.Manufactured in USAB. Bearing ProtectionThe 3 ring set protects the ballbearing from contaminants likedirt and water. The seal retainsgrease/lubricant and preventscontaminates from penetratinginto the critical components ofthe assembly.C. Pulley IdlerThe ring set designed in thisapplication extends the lifeof the ball bearing by keepingcontaminants from penetratingthe precision bearing surfaceseven though the bearing itselfis sealed. When the shaft rotatesonly the groove ring rotateswhile the housing ringsremain stationary.D. High Speed SpindleThe QS series has been designedinto the spindle assembly toprotect the tandem bearingsagainst corrosive elements.Though it is not the primary sealin the assembly, it is designedas the final seal protecting thebearings. All rings in the set willcling to the shaft due to thehigh rotational speed of themain spindle.Smalley (847) 719-5900 105

Laminar Seal RingsSingle-Turn RingsSingle-Turn Laminar Sealing Rings YH or YS are used for a widevariety of applications. They are commonly used to protect bearingsystems by retaining grease/lubricant and preventing water or othercontaminating liquids from penetrating into the critical areas of anassembly. The alternating (staggered) series YHK and YSK offer (dueto an increased labyrinth seal) further improved sealing efficiency. They are often specified where the lubricating grease may liquefy dueto higher operating temperatures or where protection against largeramounts of contaminating liquids (such as cooling water) is required.YHThe standard Single-Turn Laminar Rings listed in the table below arereadily available (from stock). Double-Turn RingsDouble-Turn Laminar Sealing Rings offer a higher clamping force wheninstalled in the bore or on the shaft. They are suited for higher operatingspeeds, have 360 contact (no axial gap) and should be used whereapplication conditions are more severe. One typical application is wherehigh amounts of dirt and dust are present and the ring sets provide thenecessary seal against contamination from outside elements.Double-Turn Laminar Ring Sets are also used to protect contacting radialseals, rubber seals, O-rings and other oil seals. For protection in the mostsevere environment the alternating (staggered) sets YHKD and YSKD arethe preferred choice by engineers. They provide sealing with 360 contactin both the bore and on the shaft.YHDThe standard Double-Turn Laminar Rings listed in the table beloware readily available (from stock). Heavy Duty Back-Up Rings Heavy Duty back-up rings are configured with a greater axial thickness (T) dimension. The extra thickness provides more extrusion protec-tion for O-Rings. These rings are interchange-able with MS27595, MS28774, MS28782 and MS28783 back-up rings used in MIL-G-5514 packing glands. Heavy duty rings are available

Specifically, the LSB can burst, resulting in full laminar separation, which can cause a substantial decrease in lift and increase in drag 3,4. This bubble bursting .
