CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY CHICAGOConcordia University Chicago, a universityof the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod,traces its beginnings to 1864, when AddisonTeachers Seminary was dedicated, andclasses were begun in a three-story buildingin Addison, IL. Designed to educate mento become Lutheran schoolteachers, theseminary was chartered by Zion LutheranChurch in Addison (now in Bensenville, IL).Shortly after the turn of the previouscentury, the expanding seminary hadoutgrown its Addison campus, and onOct. 12, 1913, a new facility namedConcordia Teachers College in theUniversity’s present River Forest locationwas dedicated before a crowd of more than30,000 people.In 1938, Concordia became a coeducationalinstitution and in 1957, Concordia’sfirst graduate program in education wasestablished. By the early 1970s, the singlepurpose institution expanded its mission ofeducating teachers and graduates for churchprofessions by adding a liberal arts program.To reflect its broadened range of programs,the institution’s name was changed fromConcordia Teachers College to ConcordiaCollege in 1979. As more graduate programsand liberal arts majors continued to beadded, the college changed its name in1990 to Concordia University. In 2006,the University officially became knownas Concordia University Chicago,reinforcing the University’s presence andprograms in the greater Chicagoland areaand providing recognition regionally,nationally and globally.True to its heritage, Concordia-Chicagocontinues to be a leader in educatingteachers both for the Church and for theworld. Concordia-Chicago is among thoseprivate colleges in Illinois that graduate thelargest number of educators annually. TheCollege of Business, established in 2007,currently offers an array of MBA programsand concentrations, both online and inclassrooms, as well as unique programs forundergraduate business students. Throughthe College of Graduate Studies and Collegeof Innovation and Professional Programs,graduate students choose from more than90 program offerings at the master’s anddoctoral levels; and adult degree completionlearners benefit from various accelerateddegree offerings.For the past 10 consecutive years, combinedgraduate and undergraduate enrollmenthas exceeded 5,000 students, and thisacademic year, combined enrollmentreached a historic record of 6,176 students.The University now enrolls more than1,000 doctoral students and more than 300international students.Since 2010, Concordia University Chicagohas been named as a College of Distinctionand a Christian College of Distinction inrecognition of outstanding studentengagement, teaching and academicexcellence in undergraduate education.The University is now recognized as aHispanic Serving Institution. Theprestigious Golden Apple Foundationhas recognized 26 College of Educationstudents as part of its scholars program.Twenty-two alumni have also receivedGolden Apple Teacher Awards for theirexemplary work in the classroom.In 2019, Dr. Russell Dawn was installedas the institution’s 12th president. Today,he leads the University under the primarytenets of truth, freedom and vocation. Todate, more than 41,000 graduatesform the long line of maroon and goldalumni. With deep roots in the LCMS,vocation, faith and service remain thefoundation of a Concordia UniversityChicago education today.

Undergraduate CommencementStudent SpeakerUndergraduate CommencementSpeakerAnna KrenzBA in Strategic CommunicationBS in Business Administration - MarketingSarah Kramer BA ’06Actor, Director and TeacherAnna Krenz, from Hoffman, IL, is graduating with aBachelor of Science in business administration withan emphasis in marketing, and a Bachelor of Artsin communication with an emphasis in strategiccommunication. Additionally, she has competed onseveral athletic teams at Concordia-Chicago, including cross-country, basketball, andtrack and field. As a transfer student, she became involved by leading on the SpiritualLife team, competing in the College of Business’ CougarTank competition, traveling toItaly with the Communication Department and completing several internships duringher time at CUC. She is still finalizing post-graduation plans and continues to seek outopportunities to pursue her passions of traveling the world and serving her community.Her long-term goal is to be a leader at an organization that focuses on doing good in theworld of business.Sarah Kramer graduated from Concordia University RiverForest in 2006—the last year before the name change toConcordia-Chicago. She earned dual degrees in Lutheranelementary education and theater/communications.During her time at CUC, she was very involved in theaterand choir. After graduating, she accepted a Call to teachfourth grade at Zion Lutheran in San Francisco. Four years later, she accepted a Call toteach fourth grade at her home congregation of St. John’s Lutheran in Napa, CA. Whileat each school, Kramer was the director of the theater program and produced K-8 musicalseach year. After teaching for three years in Napa, God called Kramer to pursue herpassion for acting. Her love of theater, which began in high school and was fueled by theUniversity’s theater program, led to acting on camera and in voiceover. Sarah has been aprofessional actor for 10 years now, and she still satisfies her love of teaching by directingthe theater program at St. John’s and co-directing a youth theater company in Napa, aswell as tutoring students in academics. Kramer is actively involved in her church, whereshe is the lay reading coordinator and a member of the projection/streaming tech team.She’s also a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dog Ministryand enjoys sharing the compassion of Jesus with the community as one of Aaron ComfortDog’s handlers. She is very grateful to God for His unfailing love and His grace, guidanceand gifts as she continues on her journey of glorifying Him and serving His people inmany exciting ways.SPRING 2021 5

Graduate CommencementStudent SpeakerGraduate CommencementSpeakerTimothy BakerEdD, School LeadershipDr. Jamie KowalczykAssistant Provost, Concordia University ChicagoTim Baker has a spent nearly two decades in publiceducation as a science teacher and administrator. He iscurrently the assistant principal for discipline, attendanceand activities at Dwight D. Eisenhower High School inBlue Island, IL. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biologyfrom Illinois State University and a master’s degree ineducational leadership from Lewis University. Tim is a certified trainer for the ALICEInstitute, a school safety program designed to teach students and teachers how torespond to violent critical incidents. He serves on the school board for Palos CommunityConsolidated School District 118. He is also a member of the Board of Directors forMattea’s Joy, a charitable organization that provides support for families while theirchildren stay at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago. In all things he is supported by hiswife, Janelle, and children Lina, Leo and Delaney.Jamie A. Kowalczyk, PhD, is assistant provost foracademics and an associate professor of curriculum andinstruction at Concordia University Chicago. She earnedher MAT in English at the University of Chicago andtaught high school English for six years in Cicero andEvanston, IL, before beginning her doctoral work atthe University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her dissertation focused on immigration andschooling in Italy, where she lived for eight years. While in Italy she taught at the ISSRMater Ecclesiae, Pontifical St. Thomas Aquinas University of Rome and worked with theItalian Ministry of Education. She now lives in Oak Park with her husband, Pierpaolo DeCaro, and enjoys working with all of her students, from undergraduate to doctoral levels.SPRING 2021 13
