Semester 1, 2019SHINER - SUNSHINE BEACH HIGH SEMESTER 1, 2019 1CLIMATE RIGHT FOR WORLD STUDENT SUMMIT

CONTENTSIt’s only after several years of Shiner publications that the fullextent of the transformation of Sunshine Beach High into one ofthe most respected educational institutions in the region can befully appreciated. The continual growth and accomplishment of our students isevident when flicking through the issues and highlights, morethan anything, the dedication and professionalism of the staffand the ensuing motivation and success of our young people.Foremost in this issue is the almost casual display of talentand dedication from across every faculty. There is an evolvingproblem from a production point of view, however, of how toinclude all of the achievements within the constraints of eachissue. It’s a welcomed conundrum and one I will gladly face in theissues to come.DAVID MANNIONPRINCIPAL’SREPORTCOVERSTORYActing Principal GrantWilliams reflects on hisrole and outlines someexciting future initiatives. You would be surprisedand inspired by thechanges that haveimpacted the lives of twogirls from Noosa.PAGE 4PAGE 6DEPUTYS’REPORTSARTPaul Fitzgerald, KareyGoodall and HelenLeyden detail our school’ssuccesses and focus forthe remainder of the year.Plenty of pictures fromthe junior, senior andcertificate art courses.PAGE 8PAGE 14DANCE, DRAMAAND MUSICALSMUSICDramatic Arts in all itssplendour at SunshineBeach. The music excellenceprogram at SunshineBeach is a busy andvibrant place.PAGE 17PAGE 21SCHOOL COORDINATION AND PUBLISHING/ KAREY GOODALL - COMPILATION AND PRINTING / DAVID MANNION- PRINTING SERVICES / NAMBOURPRINT - EDUCATION QUEENSLAND 20192 SHINER - SUNSHINE BEACH HIGH SEMESTER 1, 2019

SCHOOL AND WIDER COMMUNITYCHINA VISITTHE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN OUR SISTER SCHOOL, OUQI MIDDLESCHOOL, AND SUNSHINE BEACH STATE HIGH SCHOOL CONTINUED THISYEAR WITH OUR SECOND STUDENT VISIT TO CHINA OVER THE EASTERHOLIDAYS.24students from Years8, 9 and 10 made thetrip to visit Beijing, Suzhou,Changshu (home of our sisterschool) and Shanghai.Acting Deputy Principal HelenLeyden said the trip was anincredible experience for bothstudents and teachers, andis part of the school’s plan todevelop “global partnerships”.Visiting the Great Wall was amust, with students electing totake the scenic gondola cablecar ride instead of climbingover 1000 steps to get onto thewall. After spending time on thewall and leaving a mark onthe newly added ‘graffiti zone’students were then able todescend via a toboggan ride.It is a unique experience tozoom down the Great Wall in atoboggan!!Students also had theopportunity to visit theForbidden City, the Hutong(old region) and barter theirway around China. They wentto a Kung Fu show in Beijing, and Chinese acrobat show inShanghai. They ate traditionalChinese food, did Tai Chi at theSummer Palace, and learnthow to diablo. They also wereable to experience real Chineseculture by doing a homestaywith one of their sister school’sfamilies for four nights. Many students thought thatthe homestay was the best partof the trip, allowing for realfriendships to be forged.SHINER - SUNSHINE BEACH HIGH SEMESTER 1, 2019 7

A reading roomwas established in the library wherebylibrary books in this room are numberedne of the reasons why this is a greatschool!!!Sunshine Beach SHS has won the2019 Regional Showcase Award forExcellence in the Secondary Years withtheir submission titled ‘Leading fromthe Middle’. The Showcase Awards forExcellence in Schools (Showcase Awards)are presented annually to Queenslandstate schools with excellent practicesthat significantly improve outcomes forstudents. I am particularly proud of thissubmission, as it tells the story of not onlythe great work of our leadership team(Heads of Departments, maths & literacycoaches), but of every staff member. Letme explain .Four years ago our year 9 NAPLAN datawas below nation in every area (writing, numeracy, reading, spelling, grammar &punctuation). We were not proud of theseresults, as we knew our teachers wereworking hard with students, teaching thecurriculum. In response to this data, wemade a few changes .To increase the reading ability of ourstudents, the ‘Wide Reading’ programwas introduced. This program is for allstudents in Yr 7–9 whereby studentsread a text at their level for 30 minutes.NAPLAN SBSHS 2018 vs Nation vs QSS:SBSHS is above Qld State Schools andabove or similar to Nation in every area, withthe exception of Yr 9 Writing (the schoolfocus of 2019)according to Lexile ability, and classes arescheduled into the library so that booksat their level can easily be selected. Inaddition, Grammar Time was timetabledfor all Yr 7- 9 students, focusing on theexplicit teaching of grammar and readingstrategies using Humanities content (Yr89).This subject has not only built capabilityof students but of staff’s understandingof grammar and reading strategies.Furthermore, the school looked at waysthat we could improve writing, spelling andreading across all subjects and year levels.SHINER - SUNSHINE BEACH HIGH SEMESTER 1, 2019 9

TEACHING AND LEARNING CON’TFive staff members, one per staffroom, took on the role of literacy coach for theirstaffroom. Our literacy coaches supportstaff in embedding whole school strategiesin every key learning area. Across theschool, years 7 – 12, we now have a numberof whole school strategies including PEELparagraph writing structure, activatingthinking, writing on demand, readingplacemats and activating vocabulary. In Maths, two numeracy coaches wereappointed, one to focus on data analysisimplications, and the other on pedagogyand modelling strategies. All mathsteachers use a maths activating thinking‘warm up activity’ (an open ended questiondesigned to illicit simple responses fromall students while providing the scopeto extend the thinking of more advancedstudents).Equally important, theallocation of maths teachers as ‘in-class’numeracy support has also supported ourstudents.P&CTHE P&C CONTINUES TO PLAY AN ACTIVEROLE IN THE SCHOOL’S COMMUNITYBUILDING EFFORTS, AND WE ENCOURAGEANY FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVEN’T YETHAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITHUS TO REACH OUT.SBSHS is now above Qld State Schoolsand above or similar to nation in everyarea of NAPLAN with the exception of Yr9 Writing, the school focus for 2019. Inaddition, English A-C data has consistentlyimproved over the last four years withan increase in A and B results each year. The 2018 School Opinion Survey datasupported the work that our teachers weredoing, with 95% of students, 100% of staffand 99.2% of parents stating that studentsare getting a good education at SBSHS. Iam certainly very proud to be working atthis school.NAPLAN data 2015 – 2018: Significantimprovement since 2015, in particular inReading, Grammar & Punctuation andNumeracy10 SHINER - SUNSHINE BEACH HIGH SEMESTER 1, 2019Our school community is not onlyabout our students and teachers.
