The Royal Society for the Prevention of AccidentsReducing the strain:1. OverviewManual handling plays a pivotal role in occupational health andsafety and after all, we all have to lift things and none of uswant to suffer from muscular injuries. Plus, we have to abideby the law and, as you can see from the table on page 2, thereare plenty of rules and regulations that need to be met.But there’s no need to panic. Applying correct manual handlingprinciples can have multiple benefits to your business –increased profits, reduced sickness absence and a happier, more productive workforce.WRMSDs accountfor 39% of all workrelated ill-health inGreat Britain01

The Royal Society for the Prevention of AccidentsReducing the strain:2. The Royal Society for the Prevention of AccidentsReducing the strain:3. Role of the trainerEnsuring that the training is effective is fundamental andcan often present a challenge. After all, because everyonehas performed manual handling, everyone thinks they aredoing it correctly. The reality is that the only people whonaturally lift correctly are very small children. As we getolder we ‘unlearn’ this and develop our own, flawed waysof lifting.Manual Handling Training helps reduce MusculoskeletalDisorders (MSDs), which are the second most commoncause of workplace injuries in the UK.03

The Royal Society for the Prevention of AccidentsReducing the strain:4. Follow up trainingOf course, Manual Handling training isn’t a one stopshop. Just as important as the initial training, is thesubsequent refresher training and follow-up sessions.Despite being a legal requirement, refresher training canbe a tough ‘sell’ to employees. After all, who wants toundergo the same training twice? The answer to this problem is to make the follow-uptraining more interesting and interactive. Try introducingfun elements such as quizzes and team exercises.FuturetrainingToday’strainingHowever you choose to do it, the refresher training is avital part of manual handling. It can demonstrate thatyou are doing more than your competitors in providing asafe working environment.04
