a message from the advancement director Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Serra, The journeys of no two Serra students are exactly alike. They never have been. However, the journeys of all Serra students have a great deal in common; they are filled with triumphs and challenges as they research, compute, analyze, lift, sprint, explore, throw, read, question, climb, act, write, present, dance, row and sing their way through high school. It is a life-shaping and empowering time, and these journeys would not be possible without the generosity of the Serra community. Tuition simply does not cover the cost of a full Serra experience. The Padre Fund provides critical funding for the operating budget. Capital gifts enable us to care for and enhance our campus. Endowment giving allows us to ambitiously increase access to students who could otherwise not attend Serra. Securing these funds is one of the Advancement Office’s primary responsibilities, and we are privileged to work with devoted alumni, parents and friends who believe that Serra is worthy of their support. The 2015-16 Padre Fund was a remarkable success, providing 11 percent of the operating budget, or 1.97 million. We are thankful for the more than 4,600 donors, as well as the efforts of our many committed volunteers. Dedicated alumni and parents led reunion efforts, hosted events, generated enthusiasm for Serra and stewarded important relationships on the school’s behalf. We achieved the goals that we set last summer because of these contributions, and we could not be more grateful. On behalf of Serra High School, thank you for your dedication and commitment. Under stunning backdrops of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks, it was hard not to be wowed by the specialty food stations that represented San Francisco’s diverse neighborhoods—delicious dumplings from Chinatown, delectable pasta from North Beach, tacos from the Mission District and garlic fries from AT&T Park. All of it was catered by Esposto’s Catering, which is owned and operated by a generous Serra family. For 60 years, Peninsula residents have raved about the mouth-watering sauces, lasagnas, made-to-order salads and incredible deli sandwiches. It all began with Ray Esposto, a.k.a. “Ravioli Ray,” who catered church and school functions while supporting his wife and seven children. He later decided to start his own business, right out of his garage, until he opened a deli on B Street. The Esposto family has been part of San Mateo’s rich tapestry for six decades. “We just did a 50th anniversary party for a San Mateo couple—a couple whose wedding we catered 50 years ago,” noted Ray’s son and current owner, Bill Esposto. “We feel very fortunate that we’ve maintained relationships like that in our community. It’s also very rewarding to have my family here— now the second and third generations. It makes me very proud that they want to be part of the business.” Annual Fund 229,737 Fund a Dream 349,119 “Serra stressed the importance of family and encouraged us to strive to be the best that we can be,” Victor Esposto said. “We were raised with a great work ethic, and that was supported at Serra. We also learned the importance of treating people with respect. We treat people like family and we have such a great crew; they’re like my second family.” “Serra taught us to strive for excellence and to give back,” added Gabe Esposto. “All of us grew up working at Esposto’s. My first job was driving for Esposto’s when I was 16. I’ve always worked with my mom and dad (Judy and Bill), my brothers and my sister, Desiree. My dad purchased Esposto’s in 2000 and I ended up working for him after I graduated from college. I’ve never left! Five years later, my brothers, sister and I started Your Party Rental Company. We wanted our business to be a one-stop shop.” Esposto’s makes planning parties super easy—from choosing menus and themes to assisting with tables, chairs and tablecloths. According to Gabe, “Everything is homemade, and we’ve used the same recipes for 60 years—from our Italian dressing to our meat sauce. The majority of the recipes are from my grandfather and Uncle Gene. I love that we’re working with the third generation now. A lot of the younger cousins work for me at our delis and running catering jobs. This business is in our blood—we’ve been doing it our whole lives.” Bill has similar feelings about Serra. His boys, Gabe '95, Ryan ’93 and Victor ’03, enjoyed their high school years. The Esposto family continues to support Serra in many ways, which is greatly appreciated. Endowed Scholarship Funds Serra’s Named Endowed Scholarship Funds exist to honor families and loved ones by supporting Serra’s financial aid program in perpetuity. Each year, these funds accrue interest on their principal amounts, and scholarship awards are given to deserving families. This year, these funds are contributing 320,000 toward financial aid for our Padres. We are grateful to the Serra families who have set up these funds and to the scores of alumni, parents and friends who have generously contributed to building them over the years.
