ABUSE Abuse, neglect and exploitation of elderly and disabled adults are some of the most under recognized and under reported social problems. Abuse: Willful infliction of physical pain, injury, mental anguish, unreasonable confinement or the willful deprivation by a caretaker of services, which are necessary to maintain mental or physical health. Self-Neglect: Disabled adult who lives alone or has no caretaker and is not able to provide necessary services to maintain his/her mental and physical health. Caretaker Neglect: Failure of the caretaker to provide services necessary to maintain the physical or mental health of the disabled adult. Exploitation Indicators: Illegal or improper use of the disabled adult or his resources for another’s profit or advantage (includes financial). If you suspect that an elderly or disabled adult may be the victim of abuse, neglect or exploitation, do not hesitate to call and discuss the situation with a professional. Your identity will remain confidential, but anonymous calls are also accepted. Call Adult Protective Services at 902-1111. After hours, if someone is in danger, call 911. Both grants and private pay are available. Private pay fees are based on the participant’s level of care and income. Assistance is limited and based on volunteer availability. Its purpose is to enable individuals to function at their maximum capacity, to become self-sufficient, to improve their standard of living, to learn to cope adequately with their problems, and to provide preventive services that will avoid family breakup and enable individuals to remain in their own homes. The two main program areas providing services are Income Maintenance Programs and the Services/Social Work Programs. Income Maintenance Programs include - Work First Employment Services, Housing Referrals, Food Assistance (Food Stamps), Child Support Services, Emergency and Crisis Assistance, Work First Family Assistance, and Medicaid. Social Services also arranges for transportation to medical appointments for persons who receive Medicaid and have no means of transportation. Services/Social Work Programs include - Adoption, Day-Care for Children, Foster Care for Adults and Children, Protective Services for Children and Adults, Case Management Services for Children and Adults, Services to the Handicapped or Aged and Disabled to include CAP (Community Alternative Program), Respite, Case Management and In-Home Services.
