As part of Arizona State University,ASU Preparatory Academy is committed to access and excellenceand to taking fundamental responsibility for the communities it serves.We share this commitment by demonstrating all students can achieve atthe highest levels, regardless of socioeconomic status. The 2017-18 schoolyear was a year of growth. I am happy to share with you some highlights.In 2017-18 we opened two additional high schools (ASU Prep Digitaland ASU Prep Tempe) and announced that ASU Prep would beginoperating three new schools in the 2018-19 school year. Our expansionhighlights the importance of partnering to serve our communities.Through ASU Prep Digital, we are partnering with school systems toenhance and augment available high school course offerings tostudents throughout Arizona, nationally and internationally. ASU Prep Digitalcourses personalize learning and students can earn ASU college credit forcompleting ASU Prep Digital courses. Our new Tempe high school isa partnership with the Tempe Union High School District (TUHSD) to extendthe ASU Prep model in Tempe. Also in 2017-18 we announced thatASU Prep had merged with Phoenix Collegiate Academy to bringASU Prep’s innovative model to three schools in the South Phoenixcommunity in fall 2018.Advancing excellence and innovation in learning and teaching is atthe core of every decision we make. It is an honor to teach the studentswe serve every day. We aspire to prepare your students for theuniversity and beyond. In the fall of 2018 ASU PreparatoryAcademy merged the K-12 schools operated by Phoenix CollegiateAcademy (PCA) into the ASU Prep family — growing our campusnetwork to now include ASU Prep South Phoenix PCA Primary (K-2),Intermediate (3-7) and High School (8-12).

(UPSI), which opened its first campus inMesa, Arizona.ASU Prep opened its downtown Phoenix location just one year later, incollaboration with the Phoenix Elementary School District, and began movingits Mesa location to ASU’s Polytechnic campus that same year.In 2016, a third location opened in Casa Grande, Arizona, in collaborationwith Barça Academy.In 2017, ASU Prep opened its Tempe high school campus in collaborationwith the Tempe Union High School District. Students developcritical thinking and learning skills that prepare themfor success, learning key concepts of each subjectby examining them in depth and at their own pace.Programs are designed to be challenging, but eacharea is flexible so that teachers can use relevantexamples like local context and culture.Students have to demonstrate core understandingof a subject and be able to think critically. Exams aredesigned to recognize, reward and encourage thislearning. Cambridge Curriculum9Classroom Experience n Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) is developed forAeach student in consultation with parents/guardians andfamilies and is conducted quarterly. This plan includes a listof learning outcomes the student is expected to achieve, anda visual indicator of progress. The final level of achievementon each learning outcome will be a part of the student’s 10week report card.At the Poly STEM campus, students engage in content andengineering challenges offered by leading STEM andother partnering organizations.Students can explore college majors and careerdisciplines through personalized academic apprenticeshipswith ASU faculty and community organizations.High school students develop leadership skills, publicspeaking skills and civic responsibility throughCapstone project ventures and university experiences.After demonstrating readiness, students have the opportunityto take ASU courses while supported by ASU Prep faculty.Students gain technological experience whilecompleting coursework.Each quarter, K–8 students work together to create a project/product which showcases the learning achieved duringthe quarter. At the end of the quarter, students and familiesgather together in the evening for a display of the workaccomplished. ASU Prep Phoenix students utilized the Create space todevelop new exhibits for the Arizona Science Center andcreated community solutions for various disabled groups.They also hosted ASU Prep Family Science Night –a special free evening for ASU Prep families featuring ASUPrep students’ STEM projects on display. ASU Prep Phoenix students participated in after-schooland weekend leadership classes from the Aguila YouthLeadership Institute. The Friendly House/TRiO Talent Search gave ASU PrepPhoenix students support in applying for college andscholarships and going on college campus visits. In collaboration with the Mollen Foundation, ASU Prep ASU Prep Poly STEM Academy’s junior high volleyballteam won the state championship. The ASU Prep Poly high school swim team won bronzeat the state championship for men’s Medley Relay, bronzefor the 100 Breaststroke, and silver for the Freestyle Relay. The ASU Prep Phoenix junior high baseball teamplaced second at the 4A Valley Athletic ConferenceChampionships. ASU Prep Phoenix students participated in a forum withUnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía. ASU Prep Casa Grande student Sydney Smythe qualifiedfor the state math tournament.Phoenix students interacted with health and wellnessexperts, had access to a community garden, and engaged inhealthy lifestyle workshops. Chávez Leadership Institute thissummer at ASU. CCLI is a high-energy, week-longleadership program for Arizona high school sophomores andjuniors. ASU Prep Phoenix sophomores Ana Garnica Flores andMaria de los Angeles Miranda were selected toparticipate in the ASU Colleges @ Lake Havasu CriminalJustice Camp. The camp provides first-hand experience within Chinese. As a team, the three were evaluated on fluency,pronunciation, feeling and memorization in the competitionagainst other high schools. ASU Prep Phoenix students Carmen Vela, Joseph VanMeter and Xavier Medina were recognized in the top10 out of 44 design teams at the ASU EPICS Olympiad.Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS), is anational social entrepreneurship program.
