Issue no 1, Page — 2THE ONLY QUALIFICATIONHis Divine Grace A.C. BhaktivedantaSwami PrabhupadaÇrémad-Bhägvatam begins with the definition of theultimate source. It is a bona fide commentary on theVedänta-sütra by the same author, Srila Vyäsadeva, andgradually it develops into nine cantos up to the higheststate of God realization. The only qualification one needsto study this great book of transcendental knowledgeis to proceed step by step cautiously and not jump forward haphazardly like with an ordinary book. It shouldbe gone through chapter by chapter, one after another. The reading matter is so arranged so that one is sure tobecome a God-realized soul at the end of finishing thefirst nine cantos. The Tenth Canto is distinct from the first ninecantos because it deals directly with the transcendentalactivities of the Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna. Onewill be unable to capture the effects of the Tenth Cantowithout going through the first nine cantos. The book iscomplete in twelve cantos, each independent, but it isgood for all to read them in small installments one afteranother.nityaà bhägavata-sevayäSrila Jiva Goswami explains in Tattva Sandharbha thatthis is not the case. Çrémad-Bhägvatam appeared firstto Srila Vyasa in a concise and subtle form, as one of theeighteen Puräëas. Srila Vyasa composed the Vedäntasütra on the basis of this first edition of the Bhägavatam.Later, when He sat in trance in pursuance of NäradaMuni’s order, the expanded form of Çrémad-Bhägvatamwas revealed to Him as the natural commentary on theVedänta-sütra. Çrémad-Bhägvatam and the Vedäntasütra share the same subject, the Absolute Truth, andthey describe the same principles of sambandha (therelationship between the soul and God), abhidheya (theprocess of attaining the supreme goal), and prayojana(the supreme goal, perfect devotion to the Lord). Manyäcäryas and scholars wrote later commentaries on theVedänta-sütra, but only those that agree with ÇrémadBhägvatam—such as those given by Ramanujacarya,Madhvacarya, and Baladeva Vidyabhusana—are bonafide.Suta Goswami alludes to Veda-vyasa’s composing twoeditions of Çrémad-Bhägvatam:sa saàhitäà bhägavatéàkåtvän ukram ya cätma-jamçukam adhyäpayäm äsanivåtti-nirataà muniù“The great sage Vyasadeva, after compiling ÇrémadBhägvatam and revising it, taught it to His own son,Sri Sukadeva Goswami, who was already absorbed inself-realization”—Srimad Bhägavatam1.7.8.—Preface to Çrémad-Bhägvatam, December 15, 1962 ·TWO EDITIONS OF ÇRIMAD-BHÄGVATAMSrila Jiva GoswamiÇrémad-Bhägvatam is one of the eighteen Puräëas,but Srila Vyasdeva wrote it after compiling the essenceof the Vedas in the Vedänta-sütra and also composingthe Mahäbhärata and Puräëas. But, one might ask, ifthe eighteen Puräëas had already been compiled, doesthis make Çrémad-Bhägvatam the nineteenth Puräëa?Srila Jiva Goswami

I worship Him as the bridgefor crossing the unfathomable ocean of material existenceÇrémad-Bhägvatam has appeared as His very self.ÇRÉMAD-BHÄGVATAM:TO GET RID OF PREJUDICESSrila Bhaktivinode ThakurWhen we were in the college, readingphilosophical works of the West, and exchangingthoughts with the thinkers of the day, we had areal hatred toward Çrémad-Bhägvatam. The greatwork looked like a collection of wicked and stupidideas, scarcely adapted to the 19th century, andwe hated to hear any arguments in its favor. Then, the volumes of Channing, Parker, Emerson, andNewman had more weight than all the Vaishnavabooks. Greedily we poured over the variouscommentaries of the Bible and of the labors of theTattvaBodhini Sabha, which contained extractsfrom the Upanisads and the Vedänta but no workof the Vaishnavas had any favor with us.When we advanced in age and ourreligious sentiment developed, we turned to ourown belief and prayed, as Jesus prayed in thegarden. Accidentally, we came across a book aboutthe great Chaitanya and on reading it with someattention to settle the historical position of thatMighty Genius of Nadia, we had the opportunityof gathering His explanation of Bhägvata-puräëa,given to the wrangling Vedantists of the Benaresschool. The accidental study created within usa love for all the works that we find about ourEastern Savior. With difficulty, we gathered thefamous Karchas (diaries) in Sanskrit, written by

Issue no 1, Page — 4Top left 3the disciple of Chaitanya. The explanations of Bhägavata that wegot from these sources were of such a charmingcharacter that we secured a copy of the completeÇrémad-Bhägvatam. We studied its texts (difficultof course for those not trained in philosophicalthoughts) with the assistance of the famouscommentaries of Sridhara Swami. From suchstudy, we have gathered the real doctrines ofthe Vaishnavas. Oh! What a trouble to get rid ofprejudices gathered in unripe years.—From the Bhagavata: Its Philosophy, Its Ethics, and ItsTheology ·THE PROPER METHOD OF RECEIVINGÇRÉMAD-BHÄGVATAMHis Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta SwamiPrabhupadaÇrémad-Bhägvatam is a personal commentationon the Vedänta-sütra by Srila Vyasadeva Itwas written in the maturity of his spiritual lifethrough the mercy of Narada. Srila Vyasadevais the authorized incarnation of Narayana, thePersonality of Godhead. Therefore, there is noquestion as to his authority. He is the author ofall other Vedic literatures, yet he recommends thestudy of Çrémad-Bhägvatam above all others. Inother Puräëas there are different methods setforth by which one can worship the demigods. But in the Bhägavatam only the Supreme Lordis mentioned. The Supreme Lord is the totalbody, and the demigods are the different partsof that body. Consequently, by worshiping theSupreme Lord, one does not need to worshipthe demigods. The Supreme Lord becomes fixedtop right 3nityaà bhägavata-sevayäin the heart of the devotee immediately. LordChaitanya Mahaprabhu has recommended theÇrémad-Bhägvatam as the spotless Puräëa anddistinguishes it from all other Puräëas.The proper method for receiving thistranscendental message is to hear it submissively.A challenging attitude cannot help one realizethis transcendental message. One particular wordis used herein for proper guidance. This wordis çuçrüñu. One must be anxious to hear thistranscendental message. The desire to sincerelyhear is the first qualification.Less fortunate persons are not at allinterested in hearing this Çrémad-Bhägvatam.The process is simple, but the application isdifficult. Unfortunate people find enough time tohear idle social and political conversations, butwhen invited to attend a meeting of devotees tohear Çrémad-Bhägvatam they suddenly becomereluctant. Sometimes professional readers ofthe Bhägavatam immediately plunge intothe confidential topics of the pastimes of theSupreme Lord, which they seemingly interpretas sex literature. Çrémad-Bhägvatam is meantto be heard from the beginning. Those who arefit to assimilate this work are mentioned in thissloka: “One becomes qualified to hear ÇrémadBhägvatam after many pious deeds.” Theintelligent person, with thoughtful discretion, canbe assured by the great sage Vyasadeva that hecan realize the Supreme Personality directly byhearing Çrémad-Bhägvatam. Without undergoingthe different stages of realization set forth inthe Vedas, one can be lifted immediately to theposition of paramhaàsa simply by agreeing toreceive this message.— Purport, Çrémad-Bhägvatam, 1.1.2. ·NO OTHER BOOK LIKE THE BHAGAVATASrila Bhaktisiddhanta SaraswatiThakur PrabhupadaOne will not attain salvation by studying Vedäntafor many crores of years. No good will come outof squeezing the nose (for yoga practice) foreternity, even if one acquires thereby the power torise into the sky to a height of ten or twenty cubits.True well being will be available to the people ofthe world only if they listen to the discourse onBhägavata from one who is himself a Bhägavata, leading the practical life of a true devotee withoutmaintaining the slightest attachment for the life ofa karmi or the life of a monistic jnani. Even if allof the books of the world are to be burned there

nityaàbhägavata-sevayäTop left 4would be no harm provided one treatise was left– the Çrémad-Bhägvatam. Even if thousands oflearning centers were to be abolished, there wouldbe no feeling of inconvenience provided the readingand teaching of the Çrémad-Bhägvatam continued. But what a wonder! What irony! This book of bookshas been converted into a commodity for trafficking! The course the world is taking is just the opposite ofthe teaching Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu gave. There’s no other book like the ÇrémadBhägvatam. This is not mere tittle-tattle or anexaggerated homage. If one reflects on it as atruly impartial judge, one will realize that therehas not been, nor will there ever be, a book likethe Bhägavatam. This book presents a gradualevolution of conceptions of the absolute, from betterto better, of non-existent, denied, attributeless, neuter, masculine, couple, consort by marriage, andlastly paramour. Sri Krishna’s sports are describedin the tenth canto. What then is the necessity of thepreceding nine cantos? In them has been shown, the deliberation of these conceptions to preparethe ground for introducing the main subject –- thedescription of Krishna’s transcendental sportivedalliances with the gopis of Vraja, in the Gopi-gita,etc., of the tenth canto. There were many whohad read the Çrémad-Bhägvatam before ChaitanyaMahaprabhu came into this world. However, the realpurport and actual object of the Çrémad-Bhägvatamis only comprehensible to those who have readit after reading the Sri Chaitanya-caritamrta. SriChaitanya-caritamrta was written by Sri KrishnadasKaviraj Goswami, one of the chief followers of theline of Sri Rupa Goswami. These persons have readthe Çrémad-Bhägvatam inside of the Caritamrta. The unrefined ease-loving people who pretend tobe vaisanavas may read the Çrémad-Bhägvatam,and the mercenary discoursers may explain it –- butIssue no 1, Page — 5according to the Sri Chaitanya-caritamrta theyonly misconstrue and cover the true meaning.Their elucidation may please the mind of theirreaders, but they only make the way to hell easierto access for themselves and their admirers. As defined in its third shloka, ÇrémadBhägvatam is the succulent fruit of the kalpataru,desire-yielding tree, of the Vedas. Non-devoteescrave for dharma, artha, käma and mokña. Themental determination of those whose desiresfor enjoyment or emancipation have been set atrest and who have passed beyond the realm ofmental speculation is not after such insipid orunsavory things. Enjoyment hunters and thosewho perform rituals for worldly well-being areafter deteriorated unsavory tastes, while monistsof the non-distinct conception aspire afterinsipid tasteless realization. The Bhägvatam.does not produce fruits of bad taste, nor does itproduce tasteless ones. It can be fully traced inthe Bhägvatam how the distinction betweenthe inner thoughts of the viñaya, the recipientof service, and the äçraya, the giver of serviceundergoes gradual development as the äçraya’sconsciousness evolves through the various stagesof being covered, shrunken, budding, slightlyblossoming, and fully blossoming. Those who have fully surpassed thevarious levels of material consciousness and havereached the stage of transcendental excellencewherein their hearts have been illuminated withthe mode of goodness are competent to taste thisripen fruit, the Çrémad-Bhägvatam. Only theyare fit to receive the sweet mellow of divine love, and only they are permanently possessed of thepurest ecstatic mood. This fruit is succulent –- ithas nothing solid in it such has skin, stone, fibresand other parts that are fit to be abandoned. The books on topics of material enjoyment suchas hunting, karma, jïäna, yoga, or devotionmixed with these things are full of uselesselements. However, in the Çrémad-Bhägvatamthere are no such despicable elements. Its sweetsucculent mellow is always relishable, evenafter liberation. And the truly liberated soulsare those who relish the Çrémad-Bhägvatam.—From Sri Chaitanyas teachings, Edited by Sri BhaktiVilas Tirtha Goswami Maharaja, Sree Gaudiya Matha,Madras.·To subscribe for this fortnightly edition ofe-magazine please email us at:nityambhagavatasevaya@gmail.com
