in PA and travels to this area regularly. (Hmm, Ishould have him bring up a bunch of foamy kitswith him the next time he comes up .).President’s LetterWe have one more outdoor meeting left for thesummer. The August meeting will be at DavisField at 7 PM, but the field has been reservedfrom 3 PM on, so come out early and fly. This will be a shortletter this month, but itisn’t because of lack ofactivity. Actually, everyone seems to betaking advantage of thesummer weather to geta lot of flying in. I seethe regulars at BillMartin Field. We have had several events atDavis Field in July: July 4th, Hand-launch, andRES events. Not a whole lot for the CRRC boardmembers to do during the summer months. Thatis mainly because of all the CD’s and volunteersthat help with running the events.- John EpplingCRRC PresidentNext up in August and early September are theSoar-In (Aug. 13th and 14th), altitude limitedcontest (Sept. 3), and the Fall Float-Fly (Sept.10th and 11th). Dick Williamson still has somealtitude limiting circuits, so if you would like one, please contact Dick. Also, we have reserved Saturdays as well asSundays at Davis Field for the fall season. Whenthe information becomes available, Dick will postsports schedules for Davis on the CRRC’s yahooforum. The 3D Hobbyshop’s foamy is still popular andseveral people have expressed interest in them. They are currently out of stock, but they will bereplenishing them as soon as they can. If you areinterested in one, you can let me know and I willdo a bulk order (saves shipping charges) and do abulk order on the necessary components fromHobbycity (also saves on shipping). 3DHobbyshop is moving from Texas to Lancaster,PA during August, so out-of-stock items may notbe shipping until September. 3D Hobbyshop hashired Noll Smith, a member of our club, to runthe new warehouse and shipping departments. Afew of you have met him at Medfield, but he lives5

July Meeting Davis FieldBusiness MeetingPresident John Eppling opened the businessmeeting at 6:30 PM at Davis Field, Sudbury, MA.This was our second meeting “on the field” forthe summer of 2011.New BusinessNo new business.New WingsNo new wings. The rest of the meeting consisted of some sportflying. Although the evening started out quitegusty, it eventually calmed down and the flyingconditions turned into a pleasant evening forflying. We even had a bit of LED illuminatedaircraft flying by Rob Pease to finish off theevening.Photos courtesy ofDick Roy7

July 4th Davis Field DemoThe open house at Davis Field went off without ahitch. We had a pretty a good turnout ofinterested spectators and the club was wellrepresented to respond to their questions. We provided some buddy box demo flying.Istvan Sleder provided some direct hands ontransmitter swap flying with some of theyoungsters. This went over well, but at least oneof the participants was so intense and wouldn’t letgo of the box before Istvan found his planedowned in the swampy area. Luckily he was ableto recover his plane and it had minimal damage. We also made an effort to keep some planes inthe air most of the time so the spectators hadsomething to see.All in all, the club was able to present itself wellto the community. Time will tell if we pick upany interested new members.Additional entertainment was provided by BenEppling who kept the youngsters busy creating, testing and flying paper airplanes.8

July 9th HLG Contest. The July 9th Hand Launch Glider contest hadconflicts with the Nats and another regionalcontest. The resulting turnout was lower thanusual, but with a concerted club effort it was wellmanaged and got good reviews from theparticipants. A greater effort will be made nextyear to avoid scheduling conflicts.10

CRRC 2m, RES Unlimited Sailplane Contest July 30A perfect day for flying RES and 2-m sailplaneswould have sunny skies with light and variablewinds accompanied by well-defined thermals.Saturday, July 30 was not such a day. The windwas strong and gusty from the north yielding lowaltitude down-wind launches and "challenging"(impossible?) flight conditions. After nine challenging rounds, the final standingswere:2-m1st Ken Sharp2nd Alan Marshall3rd Ken AntonellisSailplanes with unlimited wingspans had to meetthe usual qualifications for RES planes, onlyrudder and elevator control with optionalspoilers. Most of these planes were BubbleDancers or the look-alike Avas that handled thewindy conditions fairly well. The 2-m class wasbroadened to any sailplane with foam or built-upwings. This broadening allowed Easy Gliders tocompete in the class. Seven pilots competed inthe 2-m class and thirteen flew unlimited RESplanes. We were pleased to have Dave Garwood,slope-soaring author for Model Aviation,participate.Unlimited1st Jim Tyrie2nd Alex Haro3rd Istvan SlederThe flight time for the first round was set at 6minutes. However, the best flights were around 4minutes so the target time for the next round waslowered to 4 minutes. As the day went on and thegusty wind increased, the task times werelowered to 3 minutes for unlimited and 2 minutesfor the 2-m planes. Despite these very short tasktimes, few pilots brought their planes in close tothe task times. The longest flight in the lastround for the 2-m planes was just over a minute! For all nine rounds, only 6 flights managed to getlanding points in the 2-m class. Despite the wildconditions, only one plane belonging to KenSharp was lost off the field at the end of the day.13
