The next generation ofbio-performance materials

“Eco solutions for abrighter world. At DSM, our mission is to create brighter lives for people today and forgenerations to come. We choose activities that actively contribute to amore sustainable world. The Arnitel Eco range has beenawarded the silver Cradle to Cradle certication by internationallyrenowned sustainable design rmMcDonough Braungart DesignChemistry, and it was also the 2011winner of Frost and Sullivan’sEuropean Co-polyester ThermoplasticElastomers Green Excellencein Product Innovation Award.Eco solutionsDSM’s innovative portfolio of Eco solutionshelps our customers to reduce theenvironmental impact of their applications. One solution is Arnitel Eco, a highperformance thermoplastic co-polyester (TPC)made partially from renewable rapeseedoil in place of mineral oil that signicantlyreduces CO2 emissions from cradle to gate.Products with less environmental impact“Together, we are facing critical challenges:climate change, scarcity of resources, population growth and increasedconsumption,” says Francis Aussems,Innovation Manager at DSM EngineeringPlastics.“We need to design and build smarterproducts with less environmental impact, and we need to transition from an economybased on fossil fuels to one based onsustainable bio-materials. At DSM, we wantto lead this transition. It’s one of the keydrivers for our business.”A broad portfolioOur products include Eco solutionsproven to contribute to a greener planet.DSM’s offer includes a halogen-freeportfolio, recycle-based materials,bio-based high-performance polymers,hazardous-substance-free materials, aswell as materials that extend a product’sserviceable lifetime, provide signicantreductions in weight or friction, and help todeliver a low or neutral carbon footprint.“DSM is uniquely positioned to createinnovative Eco solutions that bring addedvalue to our customer’s applications,” saysFrancis. “We combine an extensivecustomer network with innovative researchand development potential and thepassion of our people to develop Eco solutions that bring sustainability to life.”Arnitel Eco is derived fromrenewable resources, contributing to a brighterfuture.

Arnitel Eco: a proven green performanceplastic for unique applications.CO2Proven less impactAt DSM, we recognize that the use ofrenewable raw materials is not sufficient onits own to make a product green. That’swhy we commissioned product lifecycleassessments (LCA) to prove that ournew solutions have less impact on theenvironment.Fertilizerleading to substantially lower productioncosts. The material maintains consistentperformance across its entire operatingtemperature from low to high extremes,Improved propertiesArnitel co-polyesters combine the strengthand processing characteristics ofengineering plastics with the performanceof thermoset elastomers. This elasticproduct outperforms conventional rubbersacross a variety of applications, and isavailable in hardnesses ranging from 40 to70 Shore D.outperforming other elastomers.Arnitel Eco does not require vulcanizationto optimize its mechanical properties,Global Warming potential*Classic copolyester90Arnitel Eco 70 Shore D8030(% according to IPCC 2007, GWP 100a)Arnitel Eco 46 Shore DHarvestingTransportOil pressing135 C100150 001600180030405060Renewable carbon content (% according to ASTM ormance.Accelerated UV interior test non UV stabilized(55 ShoreD)110100908070Other technical informationon UV resstance and/ortemperature dependentbehavior is available onrequestArnitel EcoClassic TPC50-10CO214012060Arnitel Eco 40 Shore D40GrowingHeat ageing [hours]*Global Warming potential relative to classic copolyesterArnitel Eco 55 Shore D70Long-term heat resistanceThe thermo-oxidative stability of a plasticmaterial is important in applicationswhere the components are subjectedto high temperatures over longer timeperiods. This testingmethod calculates the renewable carboncontent by measuring the difference inisotopes from new carbon (plants) and oldcarbon (fossil fuels). Arnitel Eco partiallyuses rapeseed oil in place of mineral oil,and the rapeseed is sourced from areaswhere it does not compete with plantsgrown for food.60CO2& processingclassic co-polyesters.110CO2CO2To assess the reduction in greenhouse gasemissions, Arnitel Eco was measuredagainst classic co-polyesters using acradle-to-gate LCA. This assessmentincorporates the total chain of events fromgrowing the plants until the product leavesDSM’s gate. The study was carried out inaccordance with the ISO 14040/14044standards. Peak temperature resistanceShort-term heat resistance is determinedby the melting point or Vicat soeningtemperature, which is the temperature atwhich the mechanical properties of theco-polyester begin to change. Arnitel Ecohas a melting point of up to 200 C,depending on hardness, and can be usedin applications with peak temperaturesclose to the melting point. Additionaldetails about melting points and Vicatsoftening temperatures are available in theproduct’s material data sheet.UV resistanceArnitel Eco exhibits excellent UVresistance. The material was tested in anaccelerated UV exposure test conducted inan Atlas Weather-Ometer Ci65(A) accordingto PV 1303 test conditions. The graphbelow shows the gloss of an injectionmoldedsample versus UV exposure timefor a classic co-polyester and for ArnitelEco with the same hardness. The gloss ismeasured according to ISO 2813 at anangle of 60 C. Classic co-polyesters showsevere surface cracking, creating a dullsurface with a drop in gloss values.Arnitel Eco exhibits no cracking and nodrop in gloss over the timed exposure, demonstrating the material’s high resistanceto UV light.Contact us today tolearn how DSM canhelp improvethe carbon footprintof your designs:Partnering for a brighter futureWith an early leadership position establishedin the emerging market of bio-basedperformance materials, DSM offers agrowing portfolio of composite resins andengineering plastics suitable for a widerange of industrial sectors and applications. Our bio-based products includeEcoPaXX , Palapreg Eco and Arnitel Eco.Arnitel Eco is suitable for applications inconsumer electronics, sports and leisure, automotive interiors and exteriors, furniture, alternative energy and specialtypackaging.
