The Office of AmericanIndians in Medicine and Science (OAIMS) works with tribal nations andorganizations in Oklahoma to increase the number of American Indianspursuing medicine as a career option. Many tribal communities are locatedin rural areas of Oklahoma and face access to health care challenges.Having enough physicians is a constant challenge for many tribalcommunities. By encouraging more American Indians to attend medicalschool at OSU-COM, we are helping to address the primary care physicianshortage in tribal communities. UNPARALLELED COMMITMENTTO RURAL MEDICINEAt OSU-COM, rural medicine is not only our mission, it’s our passion. We designedthe Rural Medical Track (RMT) to provide students with the opportunity to deepentheir personal and professional interests in rural medicine. The RMT preparesstudents for a career practicing primary care medicine in rural Oklahoma. RMTstudents develop the skills and knowledge necessary to operate a successful ruralpractice. The majority of RMT graduates match with a rural-based primary careresidency in Oklahoma and remain in rural Oklahoma after their residency.A key facet of the RMT is rural-based clinical education. Beginning with a ruralphysician shadowing experience after the first year of medical school, RMT studentshave the opportunity to complete most of their required clinical education in a ruralsetting, working side-by-side with rural physicians who serve as mentors. They alsohave the opportunity to gain exposure to contemporary rural health research topicsthrough guided research and are encouraged to hone their leadership skills throughmembership in the Student Osteopathic Rural Medical Club.“I grew up in rural Oklahoma and I saw firsthandthe shortage of physicians for multiplecommunities. The mission statement to serverural and underserved Oklahomans was a bigselling point for me when choosing a medicalschool. I couldn’t ask for a better support systemon my journey to becoming a physician.”Kailee Roe, Medical StudentHometown: Marlow, OKUndergraduate Institution: University of Central OklahomaFor more information about the Rural Medical Track, please al-track.html“I fell in love with medical mission tripsin undergrad and I knew they weresomething I wanted to continue doingto help patients in need. The GHT enhances real-world learningfor students and exposes them to international health care systems and cultures incountries with little to no resources.Medical students gain experience working in countries that have different medical, economic, environmental and cultural factors that influence quality of care, whichwill in turn foster a more global perspective on health care systems and improvescommunication skills necessary to deliver culturally sensitive health care.Research demonstrates that students who participate in a global health experiencein a low-income country tend to select primary care residencies at a higher rate thantheir classmates. For more information on the Global Health Track locations and program details, please visithealth.okstate.edu/global-health-track10
