TStudies; Social Development and EconomicStudies; Water Environment and Biodiversity.he University of KwaZulu-Natal wasformed on 1 January 2004 as a result of amerger between the former Universities ofDurban-Westville and Natal. The new institutionbrings together the academic expertise andresearch capacity of two major regionaluniversities and is at the forefront of highereducational transformation in South Africa.The University has formal and informal ties, aswell as having established exchange programmeswith more than 260 leading universities aroundthe world. At present, 20% of the total studentregistrations are in postgraduate studies. TheResearch Office, headed by the Deputy ViceChancellor Research, is responsible for themanagement and nurturing of hips and places strong emphasis oncollaborative research. The Division also assistsstaff and postgraduate students with grantapplications, contracts, intellectual propertyrights and related administrative matters, as botha return as well as a return capacity development.The University is home to the region’s leadingacademics and has an impressive number ofinternationally acclaimed scientists and researchersamong its staff, as rated by the National ResearchFoundation. The full spectrum of research issupported, from curiosity-driven to applicationbased, and participatory action research withcommunity partners. A CHOICE OF CAMPUSESThe University of KwaZulu-Natal offers prospective students the choice of five campuses, eachwith its own distinctive character.Edgewood Campus (Pinetown)by Mr T.B. Davis, whose son Howard Davis waskilled during the Battle of Somme in World WarI, the Howard College Campus is situated onthe Berea and offers spectacular views of theDurban harbour. The Campus is situated in anenvironmental conservancy and the lush gardensreflect a commitment to indigenous flora andfauna. Howard College currently offers a range ofpostgraduate qualifications in Engineering, Law,Nursing and Humanities (including Music, SocialWork, Housing and Architecture).The former Edgewood College of Education wasincorporated in 2001 and the Edgewood Campusin Pinetown is now the University’s primary sitefor teacher education. With easy access to theN3 highway and approximately 20 minutes’ drivefrom Durban, the Campus offers sophisticatedand attractive facilities to a growing number ofeducation students. Initial and in-service teachereducation, higher degrees in a wide range ofspecialisms, as well as research and consultancyare offered. Staff members are engaged withpolicy-making in education in South Africa andcontribute to the international profile of theUniversity through participating in internationalconferences, teaching international students,hosting international visitors, and publishing ininternational books and journals.Nelson R Mandela School ofMedicine (Durban)The Medical School was founded in 1950 asa ‘black faculty’ in a ‘white institution’. TheSchool has been synonymous with the strugglefor democracy and racial equality. On its 50thanniversary in 2000, the School received the finestbirthday present it could have wished for – theagreement of former President and Nobel Peaceprizewinner, Nelson Mandela, to link his name tothe School. It is training a generation of clinicalresearchers, enhancing the clinical researchinfrastructure in KwaZulu-Natal, and fosteringcollaborations between research groups workingon similar projects in South Africa and othercountries.Howard College Campus (Durban)Durban is a vibrant coastal city renowned for itsbeaches and coastal resorts. Pietermaritzburg CampusThe Campus currently offers postgraduateprogrammes in Science, Engineering, Managementand Health Sciences.Pietermaritzburg is located in the centre of theKwaZulu-Natal Midlands, close to numerous naturereserves and parks, an hour’s drive from Durbanand two hours from the Drakensberg. The city hasa rich architectural heritage, with fine examples ofVictorian and Edwardian buildings. The city is thebirthplace of the former University of Natal andits forerunner, the Natal University College, whichopened its doors to 57 students in 1910. Two yearslater, Old Main Building was completed and thehub of the present-day Pietermaritzburg Campuswas established.
