JULY 2009Think andGrow Richby Napoleon HillSuccess PrinciplesNow’s the time to become a practicaldreamer with a definite purposeQUICK OVERVIEWWritten during the Great Depression, Think and Grow Rich touted hope in a timewhen almost all hope was lost. Napoleon Hill knew Americans needed inspiration tosee beyond their circumstances to the possibility of a prosperous future.Published in 1937, Think and Grow Rich focuses on 13 principles for successful livingculled from what Hill learned during years of researching hundreds of the mostsuccessful people of his time. The book offers insights on how successful people achievetheir goals and instructs readers on how to apply these principles to their own lives.Today, the original version of Think and Grow Rich (which was used for this summary) isconsidered public domain and is accessible free in e-book form on the Web.APPLY AND ACHIEVEHill predicted that fortunes would be made by those who viewed the fi nancialhardships of the time as opportunities to create a new and better life for themselves.“Never in the history of America has there been so great an opportunity for practicaldreamers as now exists . A new race is about to be run . The rules of the racehave changed because we now live in a changed world .” That statement was true in1937, and it seems history is repeating itself once again. Is it possible to gain riches by changing your thought process?Edwin C. Barnes discovered how true it is that men really do think and grow rich. His discovery began with a burning desire to become a business associate of the greatThomas Edison. One of the chief characteristics of Barnes’ desire was that it was definite. He wantedto work with Edison, not for him. When this desire, or impulse of thought, first flashedinto his mind, he was in no position to act upon it. Two difficulties stood in his way:1SUCCESS PointsIn this book you’ll learn: Proven principles forsuccessful living The six “ghosts of fear” andhow to outwit themINTRODUCTIONPageWritten by Napoleon HillFirst published in 1937Book cover shown:Random House, 1987 Why you need to knowexactly what you want in life How to become “successconscious” as opposed to“failure conscious”SUCCESS.comSUCCESS BOOK SUMMARIES

Think and Grow RichThe Value of FaithFAITH is the “eternal elixir” which gives life, power, and action to the impulse of thought! The foregoing sentence is worth reading asecond time, and a third, and a fourth. It is worthreading aloud!FAITH is the starting point of all accumulation ofriches!FAITH is the basis of all “miracles,” and allmysteries which cannot be analyzed by the rulesof science!FAITH is the only known antidote for FAILURE!FAITH is the element, the “chemical” which, whenmixed with prayer, gives one direct communicationwith Infinite Intelligence.FAITH is the element which transforms theordinary vibration of thought, created by the finitemind of man, into the spiritual equivalent.FAITH is the only agency through which thecosmic force of Infinite Intelligence can beharnessed and used by man.He did not know Mr. Edison, and he did not have enoughmoney to pay his railroad fare to Orange, N.J.But he was so determined to find a way to carry out his desirethat he fi nally decided to travel to New Jersey on a freight train.Once there, he went to Edison’s laboratory and announced thathe had come to go into business with the inventor. In speakingof the first meeting between Barnes and Edison, years later,Mr. Edison said, “I gave him the opportunity he asked forbecause I saw he had made up his mind to stand by until he succeeded.Subsequent events proved that no mistake was made.”Just what young Barnes said to Mr. Edison on that occasionwas far less important than what he thought. Edison himselfsaid so! It was what he thought that counted.Eventually, the opportunity came. Mr. Edison had justperfected a new office device known as the Edison DictatingMachine. His salesmen did not believe it could be sold withoutgreat effort. Barnes saw his opportunity, though. He knew hecould sell the Edison Dictating Machine. In fact, he sold it sosuccessfully that Edison gave him a contract to distribute andmarket it all over the nation.Page2The business alliance went on to operate for decades. Outof it, Barnes made himself rich in money, but he had also donesomething infi nitely greater—he had proved that one reallymay Think and Grow Rich.Barnes literally thought himself into a partnership withthe great Edison! He thought himself into a fortune. He hadnothing to start with, except the capacity to know what hewanted and the determination to stand by that desire until herealized it.Think and Grow Rich explores the principles behind changingthe thought process to achieve success. When you begin tothink and grow rich, you will observe that riches begin with astate of mind, with defi niteness of purpose and with little or nohard work.Observe very closely, as soon as you master the principles ofthis philosophy and begin to follow the instructions for applyingthese principles, your fi nancial status will begin to improve andeverything you touch will begin to transmute itself into an assetfor your benefit. Impossible? Not at all!The object of Think and Grow Rich is to help all who seek it tolearn the art of changing their minds from failure consciousnessto success consciousness.DESIRE: THE STARTING POINT OFALL ACHIEVEMENTEvery human being who reaches the age of understandingthe purpose of money, wishes for it. Wishing will not bringriches. But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes anobsession, then planning defi nite ways and means to acquireriches, and backing those plans with persistence which does notrecognize failure, will bring riches. The method by which desire for riches can be transmutedinto its fi nancial equivalent consists of six defi nite, practical steps: Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of money.”Be defi nite as to the amount. Determine exactly what you intend to give in returnfor the money you desire. (There is no such reality as“something for nothing.”) Establish a defi nite date when you intend to possess themoney you desire.SUCCESS.comSUCCESS BOOK SUMMARIES

Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, andbegin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put thisplan into action. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount ofmoney you intend to acquire, name the time limit for itsacquisition, state what you intend to give in return forthe money, and describe clearly the plan through whichyou intend to accumulate it. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, oncejust before retiring at night, and once after arising inthe morning. How can one harness and use the power of desire? I wishto convey the thought that all achievement, no matter whatmay be its nature, or its purpose, must begin with an intense, burning desire for something definite.FAITH: VISUALIZATION OF,AND BELIEF IN, ATTAINMENTOF DESIREFaith is a state of mind which may be induced, or created,by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconsciousmind, through the principle of auto-suggestion. Faith is astate of mind which you may develop at will, after you havemastered the principles in this book, because it is a state ofmind which develops voluntarily, through application and useof these principles.Repetition of affirmation of orders to your subconscious mind is theonly known method of voluntary development of the emotion of faith. It is a well-known fact that one comes to believe whateverone repeats to one’s self, whether the statement be true or false. Ifa man repeats a lie over and over, he will eventually accept thelie as truth. Moreover, he will believe it to be the truth. Everyman is what he is, because of the dominating thoughts which hepermits to occupy his mind. Now comes a very significant statement of truth: Thoughtswhich are mixed with any of the feelings of emotions constitute a“magnetic” force which attracts, from the vibrations of the ether, othersimilar, or related thoughts. A thought thus “magnetized” withemotion may be compared to a seed which, when planted infertile soil, germinates, grows, and multiplies itself over andover again, until that which was originally one small seed, becomes countless millions of seeds of the same brand!Page3Resolve to throw off the influencesof any unfortunate environment, and to build your own life to order. Now, let us go back to the starting point, and becomeinformed as to how the original seed of an idea, plan, orpurpose may be planted in the mind. This is why you are askedto write out a statement of your major purpose, or DefiniteAffirmations forSelf-ConfidenceI know that I have the ability to achieve the objectof my Definite Purpose in life, therefore, I demandof myself persistent, continuous action toward itsattainment, and I here and now promise to rendersuch action.I will concentrate my thoughts for thirty minutesdaily, upon the task of thinking of the person Iintend to become, thereby creating in my mind aclear mental picture of that person.I will devote ten minutes daily to demanding ofmyself the development of self-confidence.I have clearly written down a description of mydefinite chief AIM in life, and I will never stoptrying, until I shall have developed sufficient selfconfidence for its attainment.I will engage in no transaction which does notbenefit all whom it affects. I will succeed byattracting to myself the forces I wish to use, andthe cooperation of other people. I will induceothers to serve me, because of my willingness toserve others. I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness, and cynicism, by developing lovefor all humanity, because I know that a negativeattitude toward others can never bring me success.I will sign my name to this formula, commit it tomemory, and repeat it aloud once a day, with fullfaith that it will gradually influence my thoughtsand actions so that I will become a self-reliant andsuccessful person.SUCCESS.comSUCCESS BOOK SUMMARIES

Chief Aim, commit it to memory, and repeat it, in audiblewords, day after day, until these vibrations of sound have reachedyour subconscious mind.Resolve to throw off the influences of any unfortunateenvironment, and to build your own life to order. Takinginventory of mental assets and liabilities, you will discover thatyour greatest weakness is lack of self-confidence. This handicapcan be surmounted, and timidity translated into courage, through the aid of the principle of auto-suggestion.SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE:PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OROBSERVATIONSKnowledge will not attract money, unless it is organized, andintelligently directed, through practical plans of action, to thedefi nite end of accumulation of money. Lack of understanding ofthis fact has been the source of confusion to millions of peoplewho falsely believe that “knowledge is power.” Knowledge isonly potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, itis organized into defi nite plans of action, and directed to adefi nite end. Before you can be sure of your ability to transmute desire intoits monetary equivalent, you will require specialized knowledgeof the service, merchandise, or profession which you intend tooffer in return for fortune.First of all, decide the sort of specialized knowledge you require, and the purpose for which it is needed. To a large extent yourmajor purpose in life, the goal toward which you are working, will help determine what knowledge you need. As knowledge isacquired, it must be organized and put into use through practicalplans. Knowledge has no value except that which can be gainedfrom its application toward some worthy end.Behind all ideas is specialized knowledge. Because of thisvery truth, there is a universal demand and an ever-increasingopportunity for the person capable of helping men and womento sell their personal services advantageously. Capability meansimagination, the one quality needed to combine specializedknowledge with ideas, in the form of organized plans designed toyield riches. Remember, the idea is the main thing. Specializedknowledge may be found just around the corner—any corner!Page4ORGANIZED PLANNING: THECRYSTALLIZATION OF DESIREINTO ACTIONWhen preparing to put your success plan into action, keep inmind these facts:First, you are engaged in an undertaking of major importance toyou. To be sure of success, you must have plans which are faultless.Second, you must have the advantage of the experience, education, native ability, and imagination of other minds. This isin harmony with the methods followed by every person who hasaccumulated a great fortune. When formulating a plan, it is critical to ally yourself with agroup of as many people as you may need for the creation andcarrying out of your plan. Before forming your alliance, decide what advantages, andbenefits, you may offer the individual members of your group, inreturn for their cooperation. No one will work indefinitely withoutsome form of compensation, although this may not always be in theform of money.Arrange to meet with the members of your alliance at least twicea week, and more often if possible, until you have jointly perfectedthe necessary plan to achieve success.Maintain perfect harmony between yourself and every memberof your group. If the first plan which you adopt does not work successfully, replace it with a new plan, if this new plan fails to work, replaceit, in turn with still another, and so on, until you find a plan whichdoes work. Persistence is critical to success. The most intelligentman living cannot succeed in accumulating money—nor inany other undertaking—without plans which are practical andworkable. Just keep this fact in mind, and remember when yourplans fail, that temporary defeat is not permanent failure. It mayonly mean that your plans have not been sound. Build other plans.Start all over again.DECISION: THE MASTERY OFPROCRASTINATIONProcrastination, the opposite of decision, is a common enemywhich practically every man must conquer. Analysis of severalhundred people who had accumulated fortunes disclosed thefact that every one of them had the habit of reaching decisionsSUCCESS.comSUCCESS BOOK SUMMARIES

Think and Grow Richpromptly, and of changing these decisions slowly, if, andwhen they were changed. People who fail to accumulatemoney, without exception, have the habit of reachingdecisions, if at all, very slowly, and of changing these decisionsquickly and often.Close friends and relatives, while not meaning to doso, often handicap one through “opinions.” You havea brain and mind of your own. Use it, and reach yourown decisions.Indecision is a habit which usually begins in youth. Themajor weakness of all educational systems is that theyneither teach nor encourage the habit of definite decision.Definiteness of decision always requires courage, sometimes very great courage. The fifty-six men whosigned the Declaration of Independence staked their liveson the decision to affix their signatures to that document.PERSISTENCE: THESUSTAINED EFFORTNECESSARY TOINDUCE FAITHPersistence is an essential factor in the procedure oftransmuting desire into its monetary equivalent. Thebasis of persistence is the power of will. The startingpoint of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantlyin mind. If you find yourself lacking in persistence, thisweakness may be remedied by building a stronger fireunder your desires. Here are four simple steps which lead to the habitof persistence:1. A definite purpose backed by burning desire forits fulfillment.2. A definite plan, expressed in continuous action.3. A mind closed tightly against all negativeand discouraging influences, includingnegative suggestions of relatives, friends, and acquaintances.4. A friendly alliance with one or more persons whowill encourage one to follow through with bothplan and purpose.Poverty is attracted to the one whose mind is favorableto it, as money is attracted to him whose mind has beenPage5The Major Attributes of LeadershipThe following are important factorsof leadership:part of the leader, to do more than heUNWAVERING COURAGE. Think and Grow Richdeliberately prepared to attract it, and through the same laws.Poverty consciousness will voluntarily seize the mind which is not occupiedwith the money consciousness. The money consciousness must becreated to order, unless one is born with such a consciousness.Without persistence, you will be defeated, even before youstart. With persistence you will win.CONCLUSIONIn parting, I would remind you that “Life is a checkerboard, and the player opposite you is time. If you hesitate beforemoving, or neglect to move promptly, your men will be wipedoff the board by time. You are playing against a partner whowill not tolerate indecision!”Previously you may have had a logical excuse for not havingforced life to come through with whatever you asked, butthat alibi is now obsolete, because you are in possession of theMaster Key that unlocks the door to life’s bountiful riches. The Master Key is intangible, but it is powerful! It is theprivilege of creating, in your own mind, a burning desire for adefi nite form of riches. There is no penalty for the use of theKey, but there is a price you must pay if you do not use it. Theprice is failure. There is a reward of stupendous proportions ifyou put the Key to use. It is the satisfaction that comes to allwho conquer self and force life to pay whatever is asked. The reward is worthy of your effort. Will you make the startand be convinced?About the AuthorBorn in a cabin in the Appalachians of Virginia in 1883, NapoleonHill grew up to become one of the earliest producers of personalsuccess literature.
