Various themes will be featured throughout the year forpreschools to explore on their own during their visit to TheOutdoor Campus. Stations will be set up with instructionsfor hands-on activities. We also have a great outdoorspace to explore and discover for younger audiences.Please call ahead to schedule a time to enjoy the selfguided activities.Explore the Outdoor Campus!1

Usually includes some type ofnative South Dakota game.OrienteeringStudents learn how to navigate with amap and compass.GPS BasicsStudent will learn the basics of using aGPS unit to navigate their outdoor adventures.Archery BasicsStudents will lean about safety and thebasics of archery shooting. CLASSDESCRIPTIONPellet Gun BasicsStudents will learn gun safety, shootingpositions, and techniques. All related tohunting in South Dakota.FishingLearn basic fishing safety/castingtechniques, then use this knowledge to fishin the Outdoor Campus pond.Canoe/KayakLearn the basics of paddling in a canoe orkayak, safety, and paddling strokes. Makesure to wear clothes that can get wet.Outdoor SurvivalStudents will learn survival techniques forwilderness settings. Get hands onexperience with building shelters and fires.Fly FishingStudents learn the basics of fly fishing onour pond, along with safety. (Maximum 16students)Rock ClimbingStudents will learn basic safety andtechniques of rock climbing. CLASSDESCRIPTIONSnow Shoe BasicsStudents learn the basics on snowshoeing and experience it on campus.There may be an option to do this on theMickelson Trail.Nature Photography Students will practice observation skillsto capture nature in unique waysthrough photography. School groups may choose to visit the OutdoorCampus on their own. The following guidelines willhelp you make your trip successful. Please call to schedule your group in advance.The Outdoor Campus has programs dailythroughout the school year, sometimes spaceis an issue. This helps to prevent conflicts. The front desk has scavenger hunts availableto use. There is also plenty of exploring to doinside and outside of the building. Plan 1 to 2 hours here with your students toexplore inside and outside on the trails. Wildlife crates are available for teachers toborrow. There is a two week maximum and adeposit of 75 (checks only, we cannot take creditcards). Nature ‘s ClassroomRegistration Deadline: January 261 creditThis workshop will train participants to use Project Wild and Project LearningTree outdoor education programs and qualify participants to acquire resourceguides and materials. It is a nature-based education program that relate toSouth Dakota Content Standard’s requirements. Winter/Spring– December 17th Programs scheduled on first come/first serve basis. We schedule programs Tuesday-Friday. Classes over 30 students will need to split into twoor more groups. Due to staff availability, accommodating more than2 classes (less than 30 students each) this winter/spring will be difficult. If possible, please considerbringing only one or two classes at a time.
