(You may be asked to enter your email address at the beginning of the search.)&RXUVH 2YHUYLHZThis course will introduce you to the concepts and methods involved in the process of drawingmeaningful conclusions based on observation and experimentation. After covering basicconcepts of probability, we will focus on collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions fromdata. By the end of the semester, you will be able to gather, analyze, and interpret data, drawmeaningful conclusions, discuss the reliability of your conclusions and the assumptions uponwhich your conclusions are based.

Prerequisites: A previous course in statistics (e.g., STAT/MATH 212) or demonstrated ability inquantitative thinking (e.g., MATH 140 or 171 or 202), or graduate standing.Minitab provides the opportunity to learn statistics through interaction, with over 600 applet simulations, anabundance of real-world datasets, and immediate feedback on practice problems. Minitab is a self-paced tutorial thatoffers a wide variety of interactive practice materials designed to bring the concepts to life. Minitab includes astatistical analysis package to allow easy access to numerical and graphical analyses of real data.&RXUVH *RDOVUpon completion of this course, students will be able to:x Demonstrate an understanding of methods for conducting and summarizing scientific studies.x Demonstrate an understanding of probability concepts for quantifying uncertainty andxxxxassessing probability of events.Demonstrate an understanding of when and how to apply several methods of inferencefor means and categorical data.Demonstrate an understanding of when and how to apply inferential regression methodsto examine relationships among variables.Demonstrate an understanding of how to apply experimental design concepts for somestandard design.Demonstrate an ability to choose and implement appropriate data collection, analysis, andinterpretation for given scenarios.&RXUVH :RUNThe course work consists of several homework assignments and exams where you candemonstrate mastery of material. Statistical software will be used over the course of thesemester. Participation in online discussions is an important component of this course and allstudents are encouraged to ask questions and share insights. You are expected to behaveprofessionally in online discussions. Please be polite, courteous, and respectful towards yourpeers, and your professor. You will need a printer and a tool for making a digital image for both the assignments andexams. More details follow below.AssignmentsAssignments are utilized to encourage your mastery of the statistical methods and concepts usedin research. You will witness demonstrations of the application of different statistical methodsfor different scenarios. Assignments are used to provide practice using these methods, thereby

transferring these skills to you. Detailed assignment instructions are posted in the Lessons on the leftof the screen. There are 7 assigned assignments and the lowest score will be dropped. All seven of theassignments must be taken. You will need to be able to download and print out your assignments, complete them, upload to yourcomputer and attach to the assignment drop boxes.Online Proctored Exams/Take Home ExamsThree exams measure student mastery of the course materials. Practice tests will be provided. Each exam has two parts; Part 1 of each exam is multiple choice, online and proctored. See thetable below for information on what tools/resources you may use during the proctoredcomponent. Part 2 of each exam is take-home, problem solving questions for which you mustshow all your work. You must use the Global CampusProctoring Center (instructions follow) to take Part 1 ofExams 1, 2 and 3 (the Final Exam). For Part 2 of each exam, you will need to be able to show yourwork for the problem questions on the exams which means that you will need to download and print outthe problem questions, complete them, upload to your computer and attach to the assessment dropboxes; therefore, you will need a tool (cell phone, scanner) that will permit you to make a digital copy toupload.xExam 1 consists of 2 parts, Part 1 is an online and proctored exam consisting of 12multiple-choice questions (worth 36 pts). You have 60 minutes in which to complete Part1. Part 2 is a 5-question online take-home exam (worth 64 pts) and you must show all ofyour work. You have 120 minutes in which to complete Part 2. Statistical Software is notneeded.x Exam 2 consists of 2 parts, Part 1 is an online and proctored 20-question multiple choiceexam (worth 50 pts). You have 120 minutes in which to complete Part 1. Part 2 is a 5question take-home exam (worth 50 pts) and you have the entire time the exam is openin which to take the exam--there is no time limit. Minitab is needed for Part 2 of thisexam and you must show your work.x Exam 3 (the Final Exam) consists of 2 parts, Part 1 is an online and proctored 20question multiple choice exam (worth 50 pts). You have 120 minutes in which tocomplete Part 1. Part 2 is an online 5-question take-home exam (worth 50 pts) and youhave the entire time the exam is open in which to take the exam--there is no timelimit. Minitab is needed for Part 2 of this exam and you must show your work. Please Note: Parts 1 and 2 of each exam are open during the same time period (see CourseSchedule) which means you can take them at any time during that period; if you wish to take Part1 and then wait a day or so to take Part 2, that is acceptable. Part 1 of each exam is proctoredand MUST be taken through the Global Campus Proctoring Center.

See below for instructions on how to schedule proctored exams--they must be taken through the Global CampusProctoring Center. See Assessments for details regarding the take home exams. Incompletes are granted only with permission of the instructor and are subject to the followingguidelines:1. Students must request an incomplete in writing or by e-mail from the instructor before theend of the semester.2. The request must be signed and dated by the student (or identified by student's e-mailaddress), and must explain the reasons behind the request for the incomplete.3. In order to be considered for an incomplete, there are two main conditions:1. A student must complete a minimum amount of the assigned course work.Specifically, a student must complete 75 percent of the course work.2. A student must have a mathematical possibility of passing the class. A passinggrade is 60 percent or above for the entire course.4. If extraordinary circumstances (e.g., family emergency, serious illness) are involved andare documented to the instructor's satisfaction, the professor/ instructor retains thediscretion to grant an incomplete even if the minimum conditions outlined in item 3above are not met.If an incomplete is granted, the standard WSU policy applies (i.e., ALL work must be completedwithin one full year from the end of the enrollment semester at issue, unless a shorter time isspecified by the instructor. Otherwise, an automatic grade of "F," or failing, will be entered onthe student’s transcript).&RXUVH 6FKHGXOHFor all course due dates please view the course schedule FDGHPLF 5HJXODWLRQVStudents enrolled in online courses are subject to the same University academic regulations ason-campus students. Weigh their words. You’re encoideas and opinions, but do so with an active sense of respect for one another, and without losingfocus on the topic at hand. Personal attacks, inflammatory statements, flaming, trolling, anddisruption of the discussion do not have a place in academic discourse.Your instructors will promote high-quality academic discussions by removing any posts theyview as disruptive of the educational process and alerting students whose posts have beenremoved that they have violated course expectations. Students who continue to misuse thediscussion boards after a warning may be subject to removal of access rights, course failure, andreferral to the Office of Student Conduct.Postings must comply with University policy on use of computing resources, including thoseregarding harassment and discrimination, as well as conform to the Standards of Conduct forStudents. Students are encouraged to review the Standards, particularly WAC 504-26-218, 50426-220, and 504-26-222. Visit the University Website specific to your campus of enrollment formore information. In certain courses, assessment of discussion posts is part of the final grade. Criteria forevaluating your discussion participation will be explained elsewhere in the course space, ifapplicable.NetiquetteJust as in a physical classroom, a good discussion in an online classroom depends on everyonefeeling safe and respected. Here are a few tips for creating an educational and enjoyablediscussion space:

xxxxxxIt is difficult to “read”–be clear, useemotionemoticons orin onlinconcisely express your feelings (e.g., "ha, ha")Use of all capitals sends the message that YOU ARE SHOUTING!Give positive feedback (“good idea, thanks”comments, stereotypes and labels.Apply the same standards you would follow in a face-to-face classroom discussion.Maintain a sense of dignity and decorum (an online class is not the same as yourFacebook account or your email).Argue not with emotion but with knowledge, facts, authority and reason. For more on the Core Rules of Netiquette, esnet.html&ULWLFDO 7KLQNLQJThe ability to think and write critically is an essential skill in many walks of life. Criticalthinking skills are developed and refined through practice, self-reflection, and the critique andsupport of peers and instructors. Throughout this course you will have many opportunities toexercise your analytical thinking, synthesize information, and apply knowledge to real-lifesituations.The course developer or your instructor may have provided a critical thinking rubric in thiscourse space, if applicable, to assess your own writing and that of other students. Please review itcarefully before completing each activity.5HDVRQDEOH FFRPPRGDWLRReasonable accommodations are available in online classes for students with a documenteddisability.
