IntroductionFIRST AND FOREMOSTThe concept of spiral wound gasket construction was originated by Flexitallicin 1912, inaugurating the beginning of a new era in safe, effective sealing. The primary purpose for this development was the increasingly severetemperatures and pressures used by U.S. refinery operators in the first halfof the century. The necessity for a gasket to have the ability to recover cannot be overemphasized. The effects of pressure and temperature fluctuations, thetemperature differential across the flange face, together with bolt stressrelaxation and creep, demand a gasket with adequate flexibility and recoveryto maintain a seal even under these varying service conditions. The FlexitallicSpiral Wound Gasket is the precision engineered solution to such problems, meeting the most exacting conditions of both temperature and pressure inflanged joints and similar assemblies and against virtually every knowncorrosive and toxic media. This publication is designed to facilitate the specification and ordering ofstandard Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gaskets. Dimensional data for the basicstyles - Style CG, Style CGI, Style R and Style RIR are detailed on respectivetables.3

GASKETIDENTIFICATION GUIDE RING COLOR CODINGFor ease of identification, Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gaskets utilize a color coding system around the outside edge of thecentering ring, thus permitting full identification of both the winding and filler materials.METALLICWINDINGMATERIALSThe metallic windingmaterial is designated bya solid color identificationaround the outside edgeof the centering e347SSBlue31OSSNo color304LSSNo color309SSNo color430SSNo colorAlloy 20BlackTitanium PurpleInconel 600/625GoldIncoloy 800/825WhiteInconel X750No ColorHastelloy C276BeigeHastelloy B2BrownNickel 200RedZirconiumNo colorCarbon SteelSilverPTFEWhite StripeFlexicarb Gray StripeFlexite Super Pink StripeNON METALLICFILLERSThe gasket filler materialsare designated by anumber of stripes placed atequal intervals around theMonel Orangeoutside edge of thecentering ring.CeramicLight Green Stripe4T H EThermiculite Light Blue StripeA N S W E RI SA L W A Y S

Style CGUtilizes an external ring which accuratelycenters gasket on flange face, providesadditional radial strength to prevent gasketblow-out and acts as a compression stop.A general purpose gasket suitable for usewith flat face and raised face flanges up toand inclusive of class 2500.Above class 600 an internal ring isrecommendedGASKET SELECTIONWhat style of gasket should I select?Style CGIA Style CG gasket fitted with internal ringwhich gives an additional compressionlimiting stop and provides heat andcorrosion barrier protecting gasket windingsand preventing flange erosion.Suitable for use with flat face and raisedface flanges and specified for highpressure/temperature service - class 900and above or where corrosive or toxic mediaare present.Style CGStyle CGIStyle RStyle RIRStyle RBasic construction type. Inner and outerdiameters are reinforced with several pliesof metal without filler to give greater stabilityand better compression and sealingcharacteristics.Suitable for tongue and groove or maleand female or grooved to flat face flangeassemblies.Style RIRSolid inner metal ring acts as a compressionstop and fills the annular space betweenflange bore and the inside diameter of thegasket. Designed to prevent accumulationof solids, reduce turbulent tlow at processtlulds and minimize erosion at flange faces.Suitable for male and female pipe flanges.SELECTION GUIDEPublished as an indication of which Flexitallic Spiral wound Gasket best suitsdifferent pipe flange Configurations and service conditions.Flange FaceRecommendedGasket StyleRecommendedGasket StyleFor high pressure/temperature duty, also for gaskets withPTFE filler, corrosive orfluctuating pressure ortemperature serviceconditions.6*NOTEIt is essential that Style R gaskets operate with acompression stop. without a correctly dimensionedstop the gasket con easily be overcampressed resultingin failure. To provide a compression stop the depth ofthe tongue, groove or recess is controlled to provideoptimum compressed gasket thickness with metal tometal contact at the flange faces (see Page 25,Table 16).

SPECIAL GASKETSGaskets of special design can beengineered and fabricated usingthe same basic fundamentals ofFlexitallic Spiral Wound Gasketdesign and construction to covera wide range of applications ininstallations for which there areno industry-wide standards.Special gaskets have beendesigned for valves, pumps, compressors, turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, etc. Consult withFlexitallic engineers as early in thedesign stage as possible.DIMENSIONAL DATA- STYLE CG & CGI GASKETSTO SUIT STANDARD RAISED FACE AND FLAT FACE FLANGES*Style CG*Style CGIGOVERNMENT SPECIFICATIONSFlexitallic Spiral Wound Gasketsare available in accordance withMilitary SpecificationsMIL-G-24716, and MIL-G-15342,latest revisions. These inner rings may extend intothe pipe bore a maximum of 0.06 inch (1.5 millimeters) under the worst combination of maximum bore, eccentric installation, and additive tolerances.b Inthese sizes the gasket is suitable for welding-neck flange with a standard-wall bore, if the gasket and the flanges are assembled concentrically. This also applies to nozzle. It is the user'sresponsibility to determine if the gasket is satisfactory for a flange of any larger bore.c Gaskets in these sizes are suitable for slip-on flanges only if the gaskets and flanges are assembled concentrically.d A nozzle is a long welding neck; the bore equals the flange NPS.e An NPS 24 gasket is suitable for nozzles.*Spiral wound gasket dimensions for use on screwed or slip-on flanges – see Table 4.11
