HiggsWhile in the Panama jungle we had to set up adefensive perimeter and carry out a guard rosterfor everyone to take their turn at guard dutythroughout the night and morning. As you knowLacey was an early riser and one morning when hegot up he noticed no one was awake pulling guardduty. In his very own creative way he correctedthe situation by having the two individuals who feelasleep dig a hole 12 ft by 6 ft and 2 ft deep. Whilethey were doing this he had the rest of the Platoongather around to watch. This corrective trainingtook about 3 hours which felt like three days. Thescenario was while these two were sleeping in theirconcealed fighting position, the enemy sneaked induring the night and quietly killed everyone. Thusthis hole was to bury the rest of the platoon. Asthey dug this hole with shovels, ax and picks,Lacey instructed the rest of us to write good byeletters to our loved ones back home. While this was going on Lacey would speak words abouthow everyone was let down because they fellasleep at their post. How families back home lostloved ones, how we lost fellow Paratroopers, howsad this was to have taken place, how it couldhave been prevented.on and on.etc.etc. reallypulling on the heart strings. At the end when thehole was done, lacey gathered everyone aroundthe hole and said words of prayer. He thenremembered the fallen by calling off each of ournames as he directed each of us to go into thefreshly dug grave. you never seen such a group ofmen embrace the moment and reality of thisexperience, it was almost like a modern-day "ILOVE MAN" moment. Regardless, it hit home. Alllearned valuable lessons from this teachingmoment that would forever be remembered as wemoved on as leaders. I personally have used thistechnique.trust me it works.thanks lacey for allthe memories.A patriotic gentleman submitted the following tothe 508 PIR Family and Friends Association andthe 508 Airborne Chapter. Dear Readers: I go toNormandy quite often with my metal detector. Myparticular area of interest is the battle for La FiereBridge and the causeway. I have collected quite afew spent 30 Cal. shells from this area. Most I findabout 6-8 inches below the earth. If any D-Day vetor family would like one I would be glad to mail it toyou. I consider the shells pretty special and almostsacred - if they could only talk.Best, Herb LahoutContact information: Email: hlahout@aol.com ortelephone 603-616-7991.Herb Lahout with some of his recently dug up .30 Caliberrounds and M-1 Garand clips found at Normandy.

It was a good long weekend. We loved the Marriott Resort Hotel and its 90 tax per night cost. We had a snack anddrink at their bar. The macaroni and cheese withlobster at 14 was very good. Bonnie and I didnot make any of the tours. This was the scene ofthe September, 1944 attempt to capture theArnhem Bridge over the Rhine River. It wascalled Operation Market Garden and wasdocumented in the book and movie titled, “ABridge Too Far”.Although the fighting in thisarea was done by the First British AirborneDivision, the 82nd and 101st airborne divisionswere part of this operation, battling to securebridges that were behind enemy lines with theobjective to eventually link up to the British at theArnhem Bridge. It was the largest airborneassault of all time. Unfortunately, casualtieswere high and the link up was not successful - itwas a bridge too far. After visiting the AirborneMuseum in Oosterbeek that provides manydetails and artifacts of the fight (pictureattached), I went to the cemetery where the deadfrom that battle are buried. Each Septemberlocal children come and place flowers at all thegravesites, and then greet the many veteransthat return for this ceremony.
