PUSS IN BOOTS"Puss in Boots", is aEuropean literary fairytale about a cat who usestrickery and deceit togain power, wealth, andthe hand of a princess inmarriage for his pennilessand low-born master.

PUSS IN BOOTSOnce upon a time therelived a Miller who hadthree sons.When the man died he leftthe mill to his oldest son;the middle son receivedhis donkey while theyoungest son was givenhis only other possession,a cat.The young man felt sad.

PUSS IN BOOTSSeeing the young man sad,the cat went over andrubbed his head againstthe young man’s leg andspoke.The young man wasastonished. “Yes, I cantalk,” said the cat, “and ifyou will but buy me ahandsome pair of bootsand a large leather bag Iwill make you a rich andhappy man.

PUSS IN BOOTSAlthough the young manwas poor.And the few coins he hadin his pocket was all hepossessed.He was so astonished thathis cat could talk,He went out and boughtthe boots and bag.

PUSS IN BOOTSDressed in his brand newboots,the cat put bait in thebottom of his leather bag,threw it over his shoulderand set out over the fields.

PUSS IN BOOTSUsing his cunning the catcaught a plump rabbit.Now, you would havethought the cat wouldhave gone back to theyoung man and given himthe rabbit to eat as he washungry but no, the cat had biggerplans.

PUSS IN BOOTSWith the boldness of alionthis clever cat took hisplump rabbitstraight to the Kingand presented it as a giftfrom his master, theMarquis de Carrabas.

PUSS IN BOOTSAs he bowed low to theKing,he noticed the King’sdaughter sitting besidehim.She was beautiful andwhen she smiled the wholeroom brightened.He bowed to the Princesswho smiled back.

PUSS IN BOOTSEvery day the cat came tothe King’s palacepresenting gifts from hismaster, the Marquis deCarrabas.Every day he bowed andthe Princess smiled back.

PUSS IN BOOTSThe cat soon became afavourite at the King’spalace.One day he overheard theKing planning a carriageride along the river bankwith his daughter.He raced home and toldhis master, “Do what I sayand fortune will smilekindly on us. Opportunityis knocking on our door.”

PUSS IN BOOTSThe cat took the youngman down to the river,“Take off your clothes andget in the water.”As soon as the young manwas in the water, the cattook his torn and tatteredclothes and hid themunder a big stone.Then waited for the King.

PUSS IN BOOTSAs the King’s carriageapproached the cat racedout waving his hands inthe air and shouting to thecoachmen,“Help! Help! My masterthe Marquis de Carrabas isdrowning.”

PUSS IN BOOTSWhen the King heard thename,the Marquis de Carrabas,he ordered the coach tostopand the coachman torescue the young manfrom the river.

PUSS IN BOOTSThe coachmen pulled theastonished young man outof the river.The young man tried tocover his nakedness.“Where are his clothes?”asked the King.“Sire, he was set upon androbbed by wicked men whotook all his possessions.”

PUSS IN BOOTS“Then we must fetchsuitable replacementsfrom the palace.”Dressed in the finest ofclothes tailored by theKing’s personal tailor theyoung man was presentedto the King and hisdaughter.

PUSS IN BOOTSHe was taken by thedaughter’s beauty.She, noting his fineclothes and handsomelooks, fell immediately inlove with him.The young man wasinvited to join the Kingand his daughter in theroyal carriage.

PUSS IN BOOTSAs the carriagecontinued on its way,Puss in Boots raced ahead.He came across somepeasants working in afield.

PUSS IN BOOTSDrawing his sword Puss in Bootschallenged them,“When the King asks to whomthese fields belong, declare,‘The Marquis de Carrabas’,or it will be the worse for you.”The frightened workers agreed.

PUSS IN BOOTSThe cat then came upon avillage.He told the villagers,“When the King askswhose lands are these,declare,‘the Marquis de Carrabas’,or it will be the worst foryou.”

PUSS IN BOOTS“These fields, sire,and all the surrounding landsbelong to the Marquis de Carrabas.

PUSS IN BOOTS“I am impressed, myLord,” said the KingThe King’s daughtersmiled and touched theyoung man’s arm.The young man was evenmore astonished by thecleverness and audacity ofhis cat.

PUSS IN BOOTSPuss in Boots came at lastto a castle and knockedboldly on the door.The enormous woodendoor creaked openand a large ogre presentedhimself,“What d’ye want?”

PUSS IN BOOTSThe cat bowed low,“I have heard youare fierce and crueland that peopleare afraid of you.”“What of it!” grunted the ogre.“I have also heard you have powers to changeyourself ”

PUSS IN BOOTSSuddenly, a ferocious lionappeared where the ogrehad stood.Puss quickly scrambledand scratched his way up anearby curtain, well out ofreach of the lion’s sharpteeth.

PUSS IN BOOTSFrom his safe perch highupon the curtain the cat’sconfidence returned,“That’s easy,” he chided,“to change yourself intosomething so big.”But, you couldn’t changeyourself into into say,something as small as amouse, could you?”

PUSS IN BOOTSWith a sneer the ogretransformed himself intoa mouse.Before you could say‘Hey, diddle, diddle’the cat had pouncedon the ogre.The ogre made fora very good supper.

PUSS IN BOOTSJust then Puss heard thesound of the King’scarriage pulling into thecourt yard.He hurried out to greetthe King and hisdaughter,

PUSS IN BOOTS“Welcome to the castle ofmy master, the Marquisde Carrabas, yourmajesties.”“So this is your home,”the King said to theyoung man.

PUSS IN BOOTSThe young man hadstopped being astonishedby anything his clevercat got up toHis time was nowoccupied in the companyof the beautiful Princess.

PUSS IN BOOTSThe ogre’s servantswere pleased withtheir new masterand preparedthe most wonderfulbanquet.After the feast,an engagementand a marriageall in the one afternoon.

PUSS IN BOOTSThe young man, the Marquisde Carrabas,his wife, the Princess,and Puss in Boots,all lived, in the ogre’s castle,happily ever after.
