Follow your DreamNewsletter of theLions Club of GungahlinIncMarch/April 2014Our club is fortunate to be in close contact with Canberra’s Scouts and Scouting. We have seen their highestnational representative, Neville Tomkins, who visited us earlier this Lions’ year to talk about the efforts of Scouts in TimorLeste, and more recently we were provided with a talk by their more youthful members who are destined for good works inLombok in Indonesia. The indirect benefits to the community of this Lions/Scouts contact, both locally andinternationally, are extensive. Consider what becomes of the funds Lions donated to Scouts – when they subsequently use itto aid those they visit overseas. Consider the fundraising efforts of the Scouts themselves, the example they present toothers and the life-enhancing experience they will gain from their travels, international contact and the opportunity to makethe lives of others better. Consider too the present and future benefit to our community of these dynamic young folk who at16 manage a budget of 40,000, plan and organise their trips and the resources they will need, and confidently brief us ontheir activities before and after their travels. Of course they are guided – so that they efficiently and effectively use theirtalents in the best traditions of Scouting – but they ‘‘walk the walk’’ and “talk the talk’’.In this picture President Steve has presented a bannerette and a cheque to three excellent representatives of ACTScouting, watched over by their guide and mentor. Earlier, their talk on their plans for the Lombok expedition wascomprehensive and interesting and left us Lions in no doubt that these and other young Australians will soon be showing allthat is best in human nature as they build on the successes of past Scouting ventures to Lombok. We wish them well.We meet at 6.30/7pm on the first and third Thursday each month at:Trevino's Restaurant Gold Creek Country Club,50 Curran Drive Nicholls, ACTPO Box 366 Gungahlin ACT 2912Our point of contact is: secretary@gungahlinlionsclub.org.auPage 1

With a forecast of rain Lion Graham, Lion Mick and LionChris drove around the roads and back roads north of Canberra with the aim of undertaking a BBQ for the Flyshooters at one of the Majura ranges. Roadworks and a number of other reasons contributed to difficultiesfinding the range but once there the BBQ plate was soon hot and the planned 0730 setup and cooking by 0800were not missed by much! For the uninitiated the Fly shoot range is off the Majura Road at the Federal Highwayend where road works have been underway since anyone can remember.Bacon and Egg rolls were the breakfast items on the menu and later, about 10am, sausages, steaks and onionswere added. Ear plugs are essential as the sharp cracks of the rifles firing are quite intense and provide a shockwhen unexpected. Lion Tom arrived about 11am (with no navigational difficulties!) and Lion Glynis arrivedabout 1230 equally geographically unchallenged! The shooters were happily catered for and, for ours and the shooters’ benefit, the rain held off - though the greyskies were low and the thunder loud. Only a few drops fell as we packed up after what might be considered asuccessful day – a bit over 400 raised.Page 3

Gungahlin LionsMarch-April 2014Farewell, thank you and best wishesOn Thursday 6 March we farewelled an outstanding pair of Lions as they leave Canberra for the warmerclimes to the north. George and Bonnie have made it their business to be closely involved in everything theycould within the club, holding various offices including President of the club (Lion George) and Secretary (LionBonnie). They have taken charge of projects and activities and, at times, taken on community work without mostLions being aware of it.Their Christmas cake selling has been a wonder to behold. Need a trailer housed or taken to or from anactivity? Always keen to take direct action Lion George had club BBQ aprons made and then sold them on tomembers – which makes us look good when catering – uniform and organised! They have undertaken Lions activities while ‘Grey Nomad-ing’ around Australia as members of theCaravanning Lions Club returning to us and then getting stuck into community activities as if they hadn’t beenaway! And now they are off again - but will no doubt soon be giving generous support in their new community.Totake an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.Page 4

Having succeeded at club level our representative at the Zone finalsStefan Qin gave a good impression. March-April 2014Gungahlin LionsHumourMARRIAGE SEMINARWhile attending a marriage seminar dealing with communication, Bill and his wife Grace listened to the instructor,"It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other."He addressed the man, "Can you describe your wife's favourite flower?"Bill leaned over, touched his wife's arm gently and whispered, "It's self raising, isn't it dear? And thus began Bill's life of celibacy.Sean appeared on the Irish version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" and towards the end ofthe program had already won 500,000."You've done very well so far," said the show's presenter," but for 1 million you've only got onelifeline left - phone a friend. Everything is riding on this question.will you go for it?""Sure," said Sean. "I'll have a go!""OK. The question is: which of the following birds does NOT build its own nest?a) Robin, (b) Sparrow, (c) Cuckoo, or (d) Thrush.""I haven't got a clue," said Sean, "so I'll use my last lifeline and phone my friend Paddy back homein Come-Bye-Chance". Sean called up his mate, told him the circumstances and repeated thequestion to him."Oh Sean!" cried Paddy. "Dat's simple.it's a Cuckoo." Are you sure, Paddy?" asked Sean. "I'mabsolutely sure."Sean hung up the phone and told the TV presenter, "I'll go with Cuckoo as myanswer." "Is that your final answer?" asked the host. "Dat it is, Sir."There was a long, long pause, then the presenter screamed, "Cuckoo is the correct answer! Sean, you've won 1 million!"The next night, Sean invited Paddy to their local pub to buy him a drink. "Tell me, Paddy? How inGod's name did you know it was the Cuckoo that doesn't build its own nest? I mean you knownothing about birds."Strike me pink!" laughed Paddy. "Everybody knows a Cuckoo lives in a ---A computer buff’s guide on ‘How to clean the house’1. Open a new file in your PC.2.
