4SUNDAY, AUGUST 15, 2021bahrainthisweekINDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY SPECIALINCREDIBLE INDIA ANDBEAUTIFUL BAHRAINA RELATIONSHIP ROLE-MODELHis Majesty King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa conferred the King Hamad Orderof the Renaissance to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2019 in recognition of thestrong bilateral ties between India and Bahrain. It is now a well-known fact that thisbeautiful island of pearls has a lustre oflove that quickly charms anyone whovisits it.Many expats working here willadmit they came here for a one-yearemployment contract and, even ifthey changed jobs, ended up makingit their home for over 20 years. It isthe welcoming spirit of this land whichgives it that well-deserved glimmer andshimmer.Indians have been coming herefor centuries, as Bahrain was a veryimportant port on the ancient shippingroutes connecting India with Arabia,Mesopotamia and Persia. And even now,in the 21st century, the Indians livinghere make up the largest expatriatecommunity of Bahrain."My visit to Bahrain may be as PrimeMinister, but my objective is to meet theIndians settled here and to communicatewith thousands of Bahraini friends," saidthe Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modiwhen he visited this island nation inAugust 2019.During that time, he had beenconferred the King Hamad Order ofthe Renaissance, by His Majesty KingHamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa,in recognition of Indian PM’s efforts tostrengthen bilateral relations with thisbeautiful Kingdom.Five years earlier, when His MajestyKing Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa had paidhis first state visit to India in February2014, on the invitation of the thenHonourable President of India, he wasaccorded a ceremonial welcome in theforecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.India’s then President Shri PranabMukherjee had also hosted an officialbanquet in honour of HM the King.Even when Bahrain’s Crown Princeand Prime Minister, His Royal HighnessPrince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, had visited India in May 2012, at theinvitation of India’s Vice-President, thewarmth seen between the leadership ofthe two nations is certainly somethingto write about . To give fresh impetus tobilateral ties, His Royal Highness alsoopened Barain’s Embassy in New Delhi.A year later, the Crown Prince had alsovisited Kerala, leading a high leveldelegation of ministers, senior officialsand businessmen.I talk with special joy because I wasprivileged to have accompanied theHis Royal Highness PrinceSalman bin Hamad AlKhalifa Crown Princeand Prime Minister ofthe Kingdom of Bahrainalong with otherdignitaries on the OpeningCeremony of the Embassyof the Kingdom of Bahrainto India held on 21stMarch 2007 in New DelhiHis Royal HighnessPrince Salman binHamad Al-KhalifaCrown Prince and PrimeMinister of the Kingdomof Bahrain meets withthen Prime Minister ofthe Republic of India HisExcellency Dr. ManmohanSingh in May 2012.His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa visited the historic Taj Mahal inAgra city in the State of Uttar Pradesh in the northwest of India in February 2014.

bahrainthisweek5SUNDAY, AUGUST 15, 2021INDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY SPECIALMinister of Health,HE Faeqa SaeedAl Saleh receivesthe first batchof CovishieldAstrazeneca vaccinefrom the Ambassadorof the Republic ofIndia to the Kingdomof Bahrain HE Mr.Piyush Srivastava inJanuary 2021 at theBahrain InternationalExhibition andConvention Centre. His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa Crown Prince andPrime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain meets with Prime Minister NarendraModi of the Republic of India.Bahraini delegations on all these threeoccasions and what I have observed areremarkable representations of diplomaticexcellence. Now, on 15 August, as we celebrate75 years of Indian Independence and also50 years of Bahrain’s sovereignty, we canonce again applaud the friendship thatIndia and Bahrain continue to enjoy.According to a recent report in “ThePrint”, Dr Ali Al Moulani, President ofthe Bahrain Economists Society, hasforecast that bilateral trade betweenIndia and Bahrain could spike by as muchas USD 200 million as economies reopenfollowing months of logistical challengesand supply chain pressures.Bilateral trade between India andBahrain dipped during the pandemic in2020, where its value fell to USD 873million. But new data from Bahrain’seGovernment and Information Authorityshows that bilateral trade betweenBahrain and India in the first half of thisyear topped USD 492 million – a 37%increase on the same period in 2020.According to Dr Al Moulani, “Thetrade balance between Bahrain and Indiacould top USD 1 billion in 2021, whichwould take it up to levels not seen since2018”. That is something we can all behopeful for.It is almost a year since His ExcellencyMr Piyush Srivastava had come toBahrain as the Ambassador of India. Andsince his arrival into the country, in July2020, his active involvement with theIndian diaspora here in Bahrain has beenremarkable. Especially with the ICRF(Indian Community Relief Fund) whichshows his commitment for the countryand to the wellbeing of his compatriots. From Germany to Ghana, from Nepalto Bhutan and from Afghanistan to Iran, the wealth of experience he seems to havegained and brought from various placeshas not dimmed his desire to humblyserve the Indian citizen outside IndiaAble diplomacy, of this kind, fromIndia and wise leadership that we cansee from Bahrain can only show that therelations between the peoples of the twolands can only grow from strength tostrength in days ahead. It is a harbingerof good times. The sweet voice of the Bahraini Bulbuland the lovely feathers of the Indianpeacock can come together giving us asymphony of friendship, which keepsgoing on for years to come.BY: SOMAN BABY

6SUNDAY, AUGUST 15, 2021bahrainthisweekINDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY SPECIALAI IN INDIA"AI will unlock the uniquepotential of each person and willempower them to contribute moreeffectively to the society.”recognizes this institution as an initiativeof timely societal responsibility. Thecenter will train over 350 students inseveral batches per year.Honorable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra ModiI was honored to be the only MiddleEastern speaker at the ‘AI for All’organized by Indian government abouttwo years ago, and experienced greattwo sessions with a galaxy of Indian AIexperts under the patronage of H.E. PrimeMinister Shri. Narendra Modi.AI IN INDIAAs the fastest growing economy withthe world’s second-largest population,India has a big stake in the AI revolution. The leading technology institutions inthe country, such as IITs, NITs, and IIITs,have the ability to be the cradle of AIresearchers and start-ups. In order tosolve social problems, Indian start-upsare growing and developing AI solutionsin education, health, financial services, and other fields. For instance, the Deccan Article notesthat the first Community Centre forArtificial Intelligence was launched inHyderabad. They also mentioned thatThe HexArt Institute is an initiative of theHexagon Capability Center India (HCCI),the greatest product development centerof the technology major Hexagon AB. ItSOME OF THE AI’S MAIN PROSPECTS ININDIA ARE: Digital assistants to be used byseveral highly advanced organizations tocommunicate with customers, saving theneed for human resources. Together with other innovations, organizations can use AI to makemachines take decisions faster than anindividual and perform actions faster. In almost every area, AI powersseveral inventions that will helphumans overcome the majority ofcomplex issues. Trade and Development Agreement tooperate together to leverage the power ofcutting-edge technology to improve andexpand trade, such as AI and blockchain.Additionally, companies like Google,Microsoft, Amazon are trying to achievethe government’s needs for cloudcomputing and machine learning. Privatecompanies will rush to win big contracts, add to the stream of funds to createinnovative technology and establishnew AI and data science startups as theIndian government pushes for digitaltransformation and introduces more AIinitiatives.HOWEVER, SOME OF AI’S MAJORADOPTION CHALLENGES ARE: India has a comparatively smallnumber of researchers in the fieldof machine learning and researchproduction. India has very little local awarenessof the latest knowledge that is beinggenerated by others each day. Given the existing and potentialpossibilities, Indian businesses have beenreluctant to accept AI. Despite the number of availablestandard packages, India does not havesufficient qualified personnel to applymachine learning to its own challengesand data. In its capacity to handle challenges, current AI strategies are minimal, andthey will have to develop to deal with thecomplexity of life in India. In general, India’s digital footprint hasseen tremendous growth. The governmentis also moving different programs towardsthe objective of technical infrastructure.Different agencies and artificial intelligenceinstitutes including sectors are developingpolicy structures and programs thatinstill such skills. With a little more drivetowards resources and frameworks thatboost its development, the Indian artificialintelligence market, which is still regardedas emerging, can certainly take a leap. Finally, worth mentioning that theresearchers learned, for instance, thatIndian investors participated in AI-relateddeals in the country worth an estimated 1.2 billion from 2015 through 2019. Duringthat same time period, U.S. financers wereestimated to have invested 858 millioninto Indian companies that specialize inAI, underscoring the significance of U.S.funding in India’s AI ecosystem. Chineseinvestors, by comparison, only investedan estimated 159 million into Indian AIcompanies during that time span.Personal Experience of 15th, AugustMy eldest daughter was born on 15th,August on India’s Independence Day at theAmerican Mission Hospital. She wasfirst attended by an Indian lady doctorand nurses. My daughter completed herprimary school education at Alnoor IndianSchool before traveling abroad. We bothcelebrate this special day with our friendsand colleagues from India, family, school, friends, and now AI brought us even closer!BY: DR. 8SUNDAY, AUGUST 15, 2021bahrainthisweekINDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY SPECIALTHE EVOLVINGINDIAN CUISINEFood is part of human life since inception. No day or occasion is complete withoutfood. India, with its diverse cultureowing to various religions and climaticconditions, has a rich culinary heritagethat has really evolved in the last 75years of Independence.India has the best of all the worldcuisines apart from its own heritage. Each part of India specializes in regionalcuisines and leaves an impression on thetourists visiting. Indian food is not aboutrecipes, but more about the legacy andthe stories being told through food. There was a time when people usedto stick to the regulars like the Dosa, sambar, idli in South Indian cuisine,Kolkata biryanis and rolls in the East, vada pav and pav bhaji in the West, and biryanis and qormas of North India. However, over the decades, Indians havegrown experimental and open to worldcuisines especially the Asian, MiddleEastern and European food.I have traveled the length and breadthof this country and after doing morethan 2000 food reviews I have come tothe conclusion that there is still a lotto explore. I also explored a lot of newdishes during my travels and especiallyloved the Middle Eastern flavors. Writinga book on kebabs and biryanis mademe travel to a couple of countries. Thelong-time friendship of India, Bahrainespecially impressed me with its local aswell as international cuisine restaurants.I was amazed to see Indian restaurantsdoing very well in Bahrain. Who couldhave imagined having a Samosa, CholaBhatura, or Puchka in Bahrain? Thequality of meat and ingredients make alot of difference. Surprisingly the bestMalabar Biryani I had was at a restaurantin Bahrain. After 75 years of independence, I thinknow people have become independent intheir food choices as well. With times tocome, food will evolve further and a lot ofcross-promotional activities will take place.ABOUT THE AUTHOROsama Jalali is a veteran food critic, historian turned chef, and foodconsultant, who contributed mainly to thenewspaper “The Hindu” along with otherpublications through his career of overa decade. Hencewe Indians strongly believe in “Unity inDiversity”.Needless to say, our Kingdom ofBahrain also has a major role in thedevelopment of India. India and thisbeautiful island that goes back togenerations, with many of Bahrain'smost prominent figures having closeties with India. The vibrant and dynamicIndian communities here in Bahrainconstitute a key link in our bilateralrelations. The two countries have had anexcellent collaboration in dealing withthe pandemic of COVID-19. Together, wehave been able to fight back and takethe best preventive measures to keep thepandemic at bay.We have come decades ahead ofour Independence era with significanteconomic reforms and liberalizationin trade and commerce. Starting fromthe year 1991, our country changedthe outlook of governance. A newIndia with an enlarged vision and roadmap for the future was on the cards. The transformation from a snailpaced economy to a rapidly growingadministration created further inroads forbusiness expansions.Modernization, backed withinnovations, helped to build top-classinfrastructure for our country. As oftoday, we can see higher life expectancyrates with state-of-the-art medicaltreatments and facilities in every part ofthe country. The country is slated to seea spike in the number of literates withthe implementation of the New EducationPolicy of 2021. The per capita income ofevery household has increased by manyfolds, creating sustainable developmentof the nation at all levels.Providing greater access to electricityand connecting even remote villages isa significant achievement in the recentpast. Fewer power cuts and substantialpower reserves are created at allsignificant power plants of the country.Current negotiations with developednations have helped improve India’s talkson nuclear power deals.India is also inching fast in tappingunconventional sources of energy likewind energy and solar energy in everydayapplications. Another major area wherethe country can clinch past its opponentsis in its oil deals with oil-rich countries. It’s an enormous feat for domestic Indianmarkets as almost every house is fittedwith an LPG connection today.Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Government can build a toilet forevery household and thereby increasegood habits among people while in publicplaces. Cleanliness also is a significantcampaign of the Government under thisscheme. Higher GDP growths in the recentpast have indicated higher economicgrowth indices for the nation. India hasalways opened its doors to innovations, and the start-up culture is proof enoughfor this fact. With the arrival of Rafaeljets, India has increased its defensecapabilities by several folds.India has now become a favoritehotspot for millions of global investorsin various sectors. Aviation and spacepower has continued to draw investorminds into structuring deals with ourcountry. The ongoing global Coronaviruspandemic has not troubled theeconomic backbone of our country. We have been able to fight back andtake the best preventive measures tokeep the pandemic at bay. The financialsectors are also aiming at increasingproduction by stepping up theirinvestments. More job opportunities forthe youth are definitely on the agendalist of the Government. Our nationhas been pushing for significant policyreforms and higher visibility in trade andcommerce wings. The founding fathers of our nation, along with the numerous freedomfighters who gave their lives to thecountry, wanted this nation to beindependent and happy. Over the lastseven decades, India is now fulfillingthat dream, inching closer to becoming aglobal power. However, to march further inthis competitive world, a nation requiresscience and technology to be countedamong the best. It is here that we cancontribute. Even if each of us decidesto work with different problems of oursociety, we will see that we all make greatcontributions towards the nation’s future.BY: K.G.BABURAJANManaging Director of BKG Holding

Notably, as per the recent WorldGiving Index report, India has risen tobecome the world’s 14th most charitablecountry, as a result of monetarycontributions made by philanthropists, corporations, non-profits, and individuals. From education to work, to socialengagements, all aspects of Indianlives changed in unprecedented ways, and it seems that these societal changeswill continue, now that the third waveof coronavirus is expected to hit laterthis year.As the COVID-19 pandemic spreadacross the country, charitable citizens– inindividual and collective capacities– notonly offered financial support, but alsocame up with unique, creative ideas toprovide help to India’s most vulnerablepopulations. From converting autorickshaws into ambulances to setting upCOVID-19 care helplines, and the citizensbecame more accustomed to givingwithout reservation.THE VACCINE DRIVEIndia is one of the first countries todevelop COVID-19 vaccine by BharatBiotech, Covaxin in collaboration with theIndian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)- National Institute of Virology (NIV).
