1.IntroductionThis service manual containsdetailed descriptions of all the repairand servicing procedures specific tothis power tool. You should make use of theillustrated parts lists while carryingout repair work. They show theinstalled positions of the individualcomponents and assemblies.Refer to the latest edition of therelevant parts list to check the partnumbers of any replacement parts. The special tools mentioned in thedescriptions are listed in the chapteron "Special Servicing Tools" in thismanual. Use the part numbers toidentify the tools in the"STIHL Special Tools" manual. Themanual lists all special servicingtools currently available fromSTIHL.Always use original STIHLreplacement parts. They can be identified by the STIHLpart number, the {logo and theSTIHL parts symbol KThis symbol may appear alone onsmall parts.Symbols are included in the text andpictures for greater clarity. The meanings are as follows:Storing and disposing of oils andfuelsIn the descriptions:A fault on the machine may haveseveral causes. To help locate thefault, consult the troubleshootingcharts for all assemblies andsystems in this manual and the"STIHL Service Training System".Refer to the “Technical Information”bulletins for engineering changeswhich have been introduced sincepublication of this service manual.Technical information bulletins alsosupplement the parts list until arevised edition is issued.: Action to be taken asshown in the illustration abovethe textCollect fuel or lubricating oil in aclean container and dispose of itproperly in accordance with localenvironmental regulations.– Action to be taken that isnot shown in the illustrationabovethe textIn the illustrations:A Pointera Direction of movement@ 4.2 Reference to anotherchapter, i.e. chapter 4.2in this exampleService manuals and all technicalinformation bulletins are intendedexclusively for the use of properlyequipped repair shops. They mustnot be passed to third parties.2Series 4144 Components FC, FS, KM

2.Safety PrecautionsIf the engine is started up in thecourse of repairs or maintenancework, observe all local and countryspecific safety regulations as wellas the safety precautions andwarnings in the instruction manual.Gasoline is an extremely flammablefuel and can be explosive in certainconditions.Always wear suitable protectivegloves for operations in whichcomponents are heated forassembly or disassembly.Improper handling may result inburns or other serious injuries.Do not smoke or bring any fire, flame or other source of heat nearthe fuel. All work with fuel must beperformed outdoors only. Spilledfuel must be wiped awayimmediately.Always perform leakage test afterworking on the fuel system and theengine.Series 4144 Components FC, FS, KM3

3.4Tightening TorqueseDG and P (Plastoform) screws are used in polymer and light metal components. These screws form apermanent thread when they are installed for the first time. They can be removed and installed as often asnecessary without impairing the strength of the screwed assembly, providing the specified tightening torque isobserved. For this reason it is essential to use a torque wrench.FastenerThread sizeFor ewScrewScrewP 6x14M 5x30P 5x14M5P 4x12D 6x28D 5x20M 6x35M 6x25P 5x20M 5x20P 5x20M 5x14M 6x30M 6x14D 5x20D 5x20M 4x9Series 4144 Components FC, FS, KMLine limiting blade/deflectorControl handle/handle/nut with washerFilter cover/filter housingFilter housing/carburetor/spacer flangeThrottle cable/engine housingGearbox/drive tube clamp (FS 56)Shroud/cylinderClamp/clamp block/clampClamp/loop handleEngine housing/shroudEngine housing/crankcaseEngine housing torsion lock/drive tubeDeflector/gearbox (FS 56)Deflector/drive tube/nut /FS 40,50)Clamp/drive tube/harness ringStarter cover/crankcaseStarter cover/engine panEnd 4.04.55.04.56.06.02.05
