EnglishSafety Precautions andWorking TechniquesBecause a chain saw is ahigh-speed, fast-cuttingpower tool, special safetyprecautions must beobserved to reduce therisk of personal injury. It is important that youread, fully understandand observe the followingsafety precautions andwarnings. Read theinstruction manual andthe safety instructionsperiodically. Careless orimproper use may causeserious or fatal injury.Warning!Reactive forces, including kickback, canbe dangerous. Pay special attention tothe section on reactive forces.Have your STIHL dealer show you howto operate your power tool. All safetyprecautions that are generally observedwhen working with an ax or a hand sawalso apply to the operation of chainsaws. Observe all applicable federal, state and local safety regulations, standards and ordinances. When usinga chain saw for logging purposes, forinstance, refer to the OSHA regulationsfor "logging operations" at 29 Code ofFederal Regulations 1910.266.Warning!Do not lend or rent your power tool without the instruction manual. Be sure thatanyone using it understands the information contained in this manual.Warning! The use of this machine may be hazardous. The saw chain has many sharpcutters. If the cutters contact your flesh, they will cut you, even if the chain is notmoving.Use your chain saw only for cuttingwooden objects.Warning!Do not use it for other purposes, sincemisuse may result in personal injury orproperty damage, including damage tothe machineWarning!Minors should never be allowed to usethis power tool. Bystanders, especiallychildren, and animals should not beallowed in the area where it is in use.different parts and controls. See theappropriate section of your instructionmanual for a description of the controlsand the function of the parts of yourmodel.Safe use of a chain saw involves1the operator2the power tool3the use of the power tool.THE OPERATORPhysical ConditionYou must be in good physical conditionand mental health and not under theinfluence of any substance (drugs, alcohol, etc.) which might impair vision, dexterity or judgment. Do not operatethis machine when you are fatigued.Warning!Be alert – if you get tired, take a break.Tiredness may result in loss of control.Working with any power tool can bestrenuous. If you have any conditionthat might be aggravated by strenuouswork, check with your doctor beforeoperating this machine.Warning! To reduce the risk of injury to bystanders and damage to property, never letyour power tool run unattended. When itis not in use (e.g. during a work break),shut it off and make sure that unauthorized persons do not use it.Warning!Prolonged use of a power tool (or othermachines) exposing the operator tovibrations may produce whitefinger disease (Raynaud's phenomenon) orcarpal tunnel syndrome. Most of these safety precautions andwarnings apply to the use of all STIHLchain saws. Different models may haveMS 4603

Englishsaw chain sharp. A dull chain willincrease cutting time, and pressinga dull chain through wood willincrease the vibrations transmittedto your hands. These conditions reduce the hand'sability to feel and regulate temperature, produce numbness and burningsensations and may cause nerve andcirculation damage and tissue necrosis. All factors which contribute to whitefinger disease are not known, but coldweather, smoking and diseases orphysical conditions that affect bloodvessels and blood transport, as well ashigh vibration levels and long periods ofexposure to vibration are mentioned asfactors in the development of whitefingerdisease. In order to reduce the risk ofwhitefinger disease and carpal tunnelsyndrome, please note the following:–––4Most STIHL power tools areavailable with an anti-vibration("AV") system designed to reducethe transmission of vibrationscreated by the machine to theoperator's hands. An AV system isrecommended for those personsusing power tools on a regular orsustained basis.Wear gloves and keep your handswarm. Heated handles, which areavailable on some STIHLpowerheads, are recommended forcold weather use.Keep the AV system wellmaintained. A power tool with loosecomponents or with damaged orworn AV elements will tend to havehigher vibration levels. Keep the–Maintain a firm grip at all times, butdo not squeeze the handles withconstant, excessive pressure. Takefrequent breaks. All the above-mentioned precautions donot guarantee that you will not sustainwhitefinger disease or carpal tunnelsyndrome. Therefore, continual andregular users should closely monitor thecondition of their hands and fingers. Ifany of the above symptoms appear, seek medical advice immediately.Warning! The ignition system of the STIHL unitproduces an electromagnetic field of avery low intensity. This field may interfere with some pacemakers. To reducethe risk of serious or fatal injury, personswith a pacemaker should consult theirphysician and the pacemaker manufacturer before operating this tool.Proper ClothingWarning! To reduce the risk of injury, the operatorshould wear proper protective apparel.Clothing must be sturdyand snug-fitting, but allowcomplete freedom ofmovement. Wear longpants made of heavymaterial to help protectyour legs from contactwith branches or brush. To reduce the risk of cutinjuries, wear pants orchaps that contain padsof cut retardant material.Avoid loose-fitting jackets, scarfs, neckties, jewelry, flared or cuffedpants, unconfined longhair or anything thatcould become caught onbranches, brush or themoving parts of the unit.Secure hair so it is aboveshoulder level.Good footing is veryimportant. Wear sturdyboots with nonslip soles.Steel-toed safety bootsare recommended.Wear an approved safetyhard hat to reduce therisk of injury to your head.Chain saw noise maydamage your hearing.Wear sound barriers (earplugs or ear mufflers) tohelp protect your hearing.Continual and regularusers should have theirhearing checkedregularly.MS 460

EnglishBe particularly alert and cautious whenwearing hearing protection becauseyour ability to hear warnings (shouts, alarms, etc.) is restricted.Never operate your power tool unlesswearing goggles or properly fittedprotective glasses with adequate topand side protection complying with ANSIZ 87.1 (or your applicable nationalstandard). To reduce the risk of injury toyour face STIHL recommends that youalso wear a face shield or face screenover your goggles or protective glasses.Always wear gloveswhen handling themachine and the cuttingtool. Heavy-duty, nonslipgloves improve your gripand help to protect yourhands.THE POWER TOOLFor illustrations and definitions of thepower tool parts see the chapter on"Main Parts."Warning!the fuel system is tight (no leaks) andthat the controls and safety devices areworking properly. Do not continueoperating this machine if it is damaged. In case of doubt, have it checked by yourSTIHL servicing dealer.THE USE OF THE POWER TOOLTransporting the Power ToolIf this tool is subjected to unusually highloads for which it was not designed (e.g.heavy impact or a fall), always checkthat it is in good condition beforecontinuing work. Check in particular thatTo reduce the risk of injury from sawchain contact, never carry or transportyour power tool with the saw chain moving. Always engage the chain brakewhen taking more than a few steps.Warning!Always switch off the engine, and fit thechain guard (scabbard) over the chainand guide bar before transporting thepower tool over longer distances. Whentransporting it in a vehicle, properlysecure it to prevent turnover, fuel spillage and damage to the unit.MS 460001BA115 KNIt may be carried only in a horizontalposition. Grip the front handle in amanner that the machine is balancedFuelYour STIHL power tool uses an oilgasoline mixture for fuel (see thechapter on "Fuel" of your instructionmanual).Warning!Warning!Never modify this power tool in any way.Only attachments supplied by STIHL orexpressly approved by STIHL for usewith the specific STIHL model areauthorized. Although certain unauthorized attachments are useable withSTIHL power tools, their use may, infact, be extremely dangerous.horizontally. Keep the hot muffler awayfrom your body and the cuttingattachment behind you.Gasoline is an extremelyflammable fuel. If spilledand ignited by a spark orother ignition source, itcan cause fire and serious burn injury orproperty damage. Use extreme cautionwhen handling gasoline or fuel mix. Donot smoke or bring any fire or flame nearthe fuel or the power tool. Note thatcombustible fuel vapor may escapefrom the fuel system.Fueling InstructionsWarning!Fuel your power tool in well-ventilatedareas, outdoors. Always shut off theengine and allow it to cool before refueling. Gasoline vapor pressure maybuild up inside the fuel tank dependingon the fuel used, the weather conditionsand the tank venting system. In order to reduce the risk of burns andother personal injury from escaping gasvapor and fumes, remove the fuel fillercap on your power tool carefully so as toallow any pressure build-up in the tankto release slowly. Never remove the fuelfiller cap while the engine is running.5

EnglishFold the grip flush withthe top of the cap. Gripthe cap and check fortightness. If the grip doesnot lie completely flushwith the cap and thedetent on the grip doesnot fit in the corresponding recess in the filleropening, or if the cap isloose in the filler opening, the cap is not properlyseated and tightened andyou must repeat theabove steps.Warning!Check for fuel leakagewhile refueling and during operation. If fuelleakage is found, do notstart or run the engineuntil the leak is fixed andany spilled fuel has been wiped away.Take care not to get fuel on your clothing. If this happens, change yourclothing immediately.Different models may be equipped withdifferent fuel caps.Toolless cap with grip001BA227 KNmarks on the grip of the cap and on thefuel tank opening lining up. Using thegrip, press the cap down firmly whileturning it clockwise as far as it will go(approx. 1/4 turn).Left:Right:Misaligned, damaged or broken capNWarning!001BA220 KNIn order to reduce the risk of fuel spillage and fire from an improperlytightened fuel cap, correctly positionand tighten the fuel cap in the fuel tankopening. If the cap does not drop fully into theopening when the positioning marksline up and/or if the cap does nottighten properly when twisted, thebase of the cap may be prematurelyrotated (in relation to the top) to theclosed position. Such misalignmentcan result from handling, cleaningor an improper attempt attightening.Base of cap in closed position (with open space)Base of cap correctly positioned for installation001BA226 KNSelect bare ground for fueling and moveat least 10 feet (3 m) from the fuelingspot before starting the engine. Wipe offany spilled fuel before starting yourmachine.NTo return the cap to the openposition for installation, turn the cap(with the grip up) until it drops fullyinto the tank opening. Next, twist thecap counterclockwise as far as it willgo (approx. 1/4 turn) – this will twistthe base of the cap into the correctposition. Then, twist the capclockwise, closing it normally.NIf your cap still does not tightenproperly, it may be damaged orbroken; immediately stop use of theunit and take it to your authorizedSTIHL dealer for repair. To do this with this STIHL cap, raise thegrip on the top of the cap until it is uprightat a 90 angle. Insert the cap in the fueltank opening with the raised positioning6MS 460

EnglishScrew CapWarning!Warning!Unit vibrations cancause an improperlytightened fuel filler cap toloosen or come off andspill quantities of fuel. Inorder to reduce the riskof fuel spillage and fire, tighten the fuelfiller cap by hand as securely aspossible. The screwdriver end of the STIHLcombination wrench or other similar toolcan be used as an aid in tighteningslotted fuel filler caps.See also the "Fueling" chapter in yourInstruction Manual for additionalinformation. Before StartingTake off the chain guard (scabbard) andinspect the saw for proper condition andoperation. (See the maintenance chartnear the end of the instruction manual.)Warning!Always check your power tool for propercondition and operation before starting, particularly the throttle trigger, throttletrigger lockout, stop switch and cuttingtool. The throttle trigger must movefreely and always spring back to the idleposition. Never attempt to modify thecontrols or safety devices.MS 460Never operate your power tool if it isdamaged, improperly adjusted or maintained, or not completely or securelyassembled.Warning!Check that the spark plug boot issecurely mounted on the spark plug – aloose boot may cause arcing that couldignite combustible fumes and cause afire. For proper assembly of the bar andchain follow the procedure described inthe chapter "Mounting the Bar andChain" of your instruction manual.STIHL Oilomatic chain, guide bar andsprocket must match each other ingauge and pitch. Before replacing anybar and chain, see the chapter entitled"Specifications" in the instructionmanual and the section "Kickback" andthe "ANSI B 175.1-2000 chain sawchain saw kickback standard" below.Warning!Proper tension of the chain is extremelyimportant. In order to avoid impropersetting, the tensioning procedure mustbe followed as described in your manual. Always make sure the hexagonalnut(s) for the sprocket cover is (are)tightened securely after tensioning thechain in order to secure the bar. Neverstart the saw with the sprocket coverloose. Check chain tension once moreafter having tightened the nut(s) andthereafter at regular intervals (wheneverthe saw is shut off). If the chainbecomes loose while cutting, shut offthe engine and then tighten. Never try toadjust the chain while the engine isrunning!Keep the handles clean and dry at alltimes; it is particularly important to keepthem free of moisture, pitch, oil, fuel mix, grease or resin in order for you tomaintain a firm grip and properly controlyour power tool.StartingWarning! To reduce the risk of fire and burn injuries, start the engine at least 10 feet(3 m) from the fueling spot, outdoorsonly.Start and operate your saw withoutassistance. For specific startinginstructions, see the appropriate sectionof the instruction manual. Proper startingmethods reduce the risk of injury.7

EnglishAs soon as the engine is running, immediately blip the throttle trigger, which will disengage the starting throttlelock and allow the engine to settle downto idle.Warning!001BA114 KNTo reduce the risk of injury from chaincontact and / or reactive forces, thechain brake must be engaged whenstarting the saw.Warning!Do not drop start. This method is verydangerous because you may lose control of the saw.001BA113 KNThere are two recommended methodsfor starting your chain saw. With the first recommended method, thechain saw is started on the ground.Make sure the chain brake is engaged(see "Chain Brake" chapter in yourinstruction manual) and place the chainsaw on firm ground or other solid surfacein an open area. Maintain good balanceand secure footing.Grip the front handlebar of the saw firmlywith your left hand and press down. Forsaws with a rear handle level with theground, put the
