December 2000Written for my friend Chris LightBy Michael James SullivanNovember 2000WOOD TURNINGYou saw a tree from the very start,I saw a living growing work of art.I harvested it and stacked it upYou looked at me and said now what? You say it doesn’t look so goodJust a stack of firewoodIt’s messy and it has no heartJust you wait till I startFor firewood’s not what I seeDeep within the heart of me.I see a tree with birds alineI’ll bring out on this lathe of mine.God put the carving’s there you seeAnd left the bringing out to me.So a little piece of happinessComes from this lathe of mine I guessSo leave me alone to turn my woodSince God let me do it so goodFor only God can make a treeBut the rest is done by my lathe and me.Items for SaleMakita 2 hp, 4 gallon, oil-less compressor. December 2000About Our Members, etc.by Phil BrownPrior to our October meeting, Lin Lambeth and ChrisLight attended a workshop with Johannes Michelson inVermont. It was a great class and they both came awaywith finished hats and a large amount of confidence. Theyreally appreciated the opportunity.Fredricksburg VA has a web site promoting gallery visits onthefirstFridaysofthemonth, http://www.artspoint.org/art/first fridays/sept00.asp . Asreported in the CAW September Newsletter, Chris Light'swork was featured at Eyeclopes Studios. The web site laterfeatured two gallery display photos with this text: "With nofewer than 20 objects, Chris Light must have emptied thestorage vault for this show. Light's work is mostly of wood, beautifully crafted, and well thought out. His attention todetail is apparent in "Gaugin's Pipe." Upon opening thesmall hinged lid on top of the pipe, you find tobaccosnuggled within. His consideration of meaning and intent, mixed with form, quality craftsmanship, and proliferation ofwork make this artist the star of this show." As you wouldexpect, Chris has been excited about this exposure and thesales from that show."Thunderstruck" a carved cherry wood sculpture with turnedelements, 50" high x 16" wide x 16" deep, was LyndaSmith-Bugge's entry in the 2000 Open Exhibition in theBell Atlantic Gallery at Northern Virginia CommunityCollege during November. A web site photo can be seen council/exhibition/1.htmlTurns out that Ed Moore wasn't the only CAW member toattend Arrowmont this year. Richard Preston received anAAW grant and took a class with Michael Hosaluk. Richardreports it was great! He made a number of things includinga bowling alley - ball and offset pins.In it's October issue THE WASHINGTONIAN recommended"best budget art galleries" included Gallery West inAlexandria, and listed wood turning as one of the types ofwork carried. The wood turning is exclusively the work ofGeorge Skorupski.Dick Wexelblat was one of the featured artists on apostcard from Sun's Traces Gallery in Barboursville, VApromoting their Fall Open House on November 11 & 12th.In December Dick and Pat will move to 543 Prescott Rd.Merion Station, PA 19066. It is the Craft Emergency Relief Fund. Itraises funds from people like us, and from numerousspecial benefits at craft related events. See web sitehttp://www.craftemergency.org.2.The previously announced Jack Vesery workshopfor next March in Annapolis has been canceled because hehad a conflict and cannot come.3.Seems to me that most CAW members have notwanted to exhibit their work beyond the joys of our ownshow & tell at monthly meetings. But with more good workshowing up, maybe that will change. Opportunities toexhibit, like the Creative Crafts Council exhibit listedabove, don't come often. We can also createopportunities, but these require initiative, work, and moreexpense.Several art centers in the area considerapplications for group shows once a year. For example,Glenview Mansion in Rockville, MD considers applicationsfor the coming year in January each year. In Columbia,MD proposals are accepted in July each year. Andproposals are accepted annually at Rock Creek Gallery inWashington DC. There are several potential places toapply in the Virginia suburbs. So, if any of you ever wantto work on or organize a CAW member exhibit, there isguidance and encouragement available for the asking.Help Teach KidsLinda Smith-Bugge will be exposing 3rd, 4th and 5thgraders to wood and some basic working skills fromJanuary 2-12, 2001, in the mornings at the Timber LaneElementary School in Falls Church.
