Surge arresters forDC traction systemsThe metal-oxide surge arresters produced by ABB Switzerland Ltd. for DC traction systems are developed and typetested according to the new European standard EN 50526-1which is specifically for metal-oxide surge arrester in railwayapplication up to 3kV nominal voltage. The surge arrestersalso meet the requirements for A1/A2 functionality accordingto VDV 525 recommendation. The rails of DC traction systems are isolated from earthto avoid stray currents in the ground. Voltage limiting devicesare being used to avoid unacceptable touch voltages duringoperation and in fault conditions. The voltage limiting device type HVL is a hybrid composedby a metal-oxide surge arrester connected in parallel withthyristors. Dangerous transient over-voltages from lightningand switching are limited by the surge arrester. Longer lastingover-voltages from the traction system are limited by thethyristors after triggering.10Surge arresters ABB High Voltage Products

E-bypass. The ABB E-Clipse Bypass has taken these developments to the next level. In addition to the benefits of the previous ABB design, ABB has added new capabilities focused upon the changing and evolving customer and market requirements. This brochure will give the user a brief overview

In 1994, ABB pioneered serial communications for VFDs in the HVAC industry. Today ABB has installed over 150,000 units (in the U.S. alone) connected to building automations systems using the various HVAC communications protocols. The ABB E-Clipse Bypass includes serial communications in the bypass mode. Now, going to bypass does not mean losing
