This guide was developed in cooperation with NSF Internationalexclusively for county and local health officials. Its purpose is tohelp officials quickly spot improper operation of the Accu-Tab Chlorination System, related to the use of substitute or “knock-off”chlorine tablets, and take necessary or corrective action.NSF International certifies flow-through chemical feeders to therequirements of NSF/ANSI Standard 50. Feeders are certifiedfor use only with chemicals recommended for use by themanufacturer of the feeder and certification is void if differentchemicals are utilized.

nsf - c e r tifi e dC h l o r ination S y st e m G ui d eThere are no NSF-certified substitutes for Accu-Tab3-inch Blue and Blue SI (scale inhibitor) Tablets.Patented Accu-Tab 3-inch Blue and Blue SI (calciumhypochlorite) tablets are formulated with a special blue saltthat gives them a speckled appearance. Only Accu-Tab Bluetablets contain these speckles, which distinguish them fromother types of chlorine tablets such as Trichor—similar insize and shape and almost always solid white. Trichor, aswell as many other forms of chlorine, is not compatible withAccu-Tab blue tablets. Mixing of these tablets could increasethe risk of fire, explosion or development of noxious fumes!Using products other than Accu-Tab blue speckled tabletsin an Accu-Tab system is in violation of NSF/ANSI Standard50 certification and could cause a potentially dangeroussituation. For more information or emergency assistance, contact Accu-Tab Technical Assistance at 1-800-245-2974.Accu-Tab Blue calcium hypochlorite tablets arepackaged in a 55-lb. plastic pail as shown.

How do the Accu-Tab Blue and Blue SI tabletswork within the chlorination system?Accu-Tab Commercial Pool Chlorination Systemshave been engineered and laboratory-tested usingonly Accu-Tab Blue 3-inch tablets to certify their performancewithin specific NSF/ANSI Standard 50 guidelines. As long asAccu-Tab Blue tablets are used according to manufacturer’sdirections, chlorine will be consistently delivered into poolwater based upon published delivery curves. See how waterflows through a chlorinator in graphic below.1. Accu-Tab tablets are placed onthe sieve plate in the Accu-Tabchlorinator.2. Incoming untreated water entersthe chlorinator from a side stream.3. It rises through the holes in thesieve plate to reach the tablets.4. Tablets erode at a predictable rateaccording to the amount of waterthat enters, allowing for aconsistent delivery rate.5. Chlorinator effluent (treatedwater) is returned to the mainsystem flow with the appropriateamount of chlorine.

nsf - c e r tifi e dC h l o r ination S y st e m G ui d eWhy should only Accu-Tab Blue or Blue SI tablets beused in an Accu-Tab system? The Accu-Tab Commercial Pool Chlorination Systemis NSF/ANSI Standard 50 certified as long as it isoperated using only Accu-Tab 3-inch Blue or Blue SI calciumhypochlorite tablets.Use of any other tablets voids the System’s NSF listing, putting the subject pool out of compliance with state andlocal health codes that rely upon NSF guidelines forautomatic chlorine feed systems.

What might happen as a result of usingknock-off tablets?Use of knock-off tablets in a chlorination systemcertified by NSF International can cost everyone frompool operators to the general public. Why?Tablets not tested and certified by NSF for use in specificsystems can damage equipment and void the manufacturer’swarranty and will violate state codes that require compliancewith NSF/ANSI Standard 50. They can also result insignificant health and safety risks including: under/over chlorination of water due to varyingdelivery rates increased potential for explosion, development of noxiousfumes, and fire due to mixing of incompatible chemicals unacceptable increases in stabilizer levels caused whenisocyanurate tablets (typically white) are used in place ofcalcium hypochlorite tablets, which can severely inhibitchlorine’s effectiveness in water

nsf - c e r tifi e dC h l o r ination S y st e m G ui d eHow can you recognize improper operation of asystem or use of knock-off tablets?Accu-Tab Commercial Pool Chlorinators come in avariety of sizes and operational configurations to meetspecific pool chlorine delivery requirements. All of these unitsutilize patented erosion technology to consistently and reliablydeliver chlorine as long as the NSF-designated Accu-Tab Blue orBlue SI calcium hypochlorite tablets are used. The only NSF/ANSI Standard 50certified tablets for Accu-Tab systems.

What should you do to report or correct improperoperation of an NSF-certified chlorination system? As mentioned throughout this guide, operating anAccu-Tab Chlorination System outside of manufacturer’sinstructions and/or NSF/ANSI Standard 50 guidelines couldpresent serious health and safety risks. If you notice improperuse (including mixing) of chemicals, please contact Accu-TabTechnical Assistance at 1-800-245-2974. For any other system, please contact NSF International at 800-NSF-MARK to help youreach the manufacturer.NSF International789 N.
