How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsWhat is a Podcast?A podcast is really just a series of audio orvideo recordings. For example, BBC Radio 1 have a Podcastcalled ‘Best of Nick Grimshaw’. This podcast isa series of audio recordings from NickGrimshaw’s radio show, broadcasting thehighlights of the show every few days.A podcast episode is one audio or video filefrom that series, much the same as TVprogrammes have episodes which are one12 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillspart of the whole series. The word ‘podcast’refers to a series of audio or video files, whilea ‘podcast episode’ is one audio file from thatseries. What Kind of Media can Make up aPodcast? As you’ve picked up by now, podcasts can beeither audio or video. Most commonlythey’re in an audio format, simply becausethat’s the easiest way to record them, and itmakes them easy to use as you can listen tothem on the go on your MP3 player. Somepeople record a series of videos though, morelike a TV series, and release it as a podcast. What Form does a Podcast NormallyTake?Podcasts, when you listen to them, aremostly very similar to radio shows. Eachpodcast will have a particular theme:e.g. mountain biking or knitting13 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillsand each podcast episode will talk about aparticular subject in that theme:e.g. how to knit a scarf or how to jumpyour bike. You’ll normally have either one presenter, ora few, talking about that subject, andsometimes you’ll hear interviews with guests. Many podcasts are really simple – just a fewfriends chatting about a subject – and they’regreat and really easy to make. Some of themore professional podcasts are produced likeradio and TV shows though. They can include14 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillstheme music at the start, background musicduring the podcasts and little sound effectsbetween interviews or sections. They soundgreat, but they take a lot longer to produce. What’s the Difference Between an AudioFile and a Podcast Episode? One of the things people find most confusingabout podcasts is how they differ fromnormal audio or video files. Well, this is bothpretty simple and a bit complicated at thesame time. The simple answer is that a podcast episodeis just an audio file which you can subscribeto. This is done through a technology calledRSS (the complicated bit ) but, the goodthing is, you don’t need to worry too muchabout the feed itself, it’s handled for you ifyou use a podcast hosting website.I’ll explain a bit more about RSS feeds in the‘Using a Podcasts as a Listener’ section. It basically means that you have a list of15 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillspodcasts that you have subscribed to, andnew episodes of those podcasts automaticallyappear on your computer when they’rereleased. With normal audio files you wouldhave to search them out on the web anddownload them yourself, but RSS feeds allowall of that to be done for you.The main thing to remember is, an audio fileon its own is just an audio file. But, an audio file which is uploaded to awebsite and included in an RSS feed so thatpeople can subscribe to it – that’s a podcast!16 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsUsing Podcasts as aListenerWhat do I need to listen to a podcast? There are a few different ways that you canlisten to a podcast, and some of them dependon how the podcast makers are publishingtheir podcast. The image above shows a typical podcastplayer, as seen on a podcasting website. Some don’t require any more equipmentthan a PC or a Mac, and some require a bit ofextra equipment and software.Let’s look at the options.18 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsListening to Podcasts on your ComputerThe simplest way to listen to a podcast is justto navigate your way to the website on whichit’s hosted, find the episode you want tolisten to, and hit the play button. That’s it!All you need for this method is a PC or a Macand an internet connection. Most podcast websites will allow you to playthe podcast episodes directly on the webpage. But, obviously that means you’re tieddown to your PC which isn’t very flexible.19 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsListening to Podcasts on the MoveOften the best way to listen to a podcast is toload it onto an MP3 player of some sort sothat you can play it while you’re out andabout. This means downloading the podcastfrom the website somehow. We’ve talked about subscription, but I’ll getto that in a bit, because the simplest way is tojust download the podcast directly from thewebpage mentioned above.Normally the page that allows you to play the20 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillspodcast will also allow you to download it. So,you can download the podcast to yourcomputer, transfer it to your player, whetherit’s a MP3 player, an iPod or your mobilephone, and listen to it straight away. For this method you need a computer, aninternet connection and a digital mp3 player(mobile phone, iPod, etc)Automating your Podcast ListeningOf course, the most powerful way to listen toa podcast is to use all the powers of the RSSfeed, automating the whole process. Thistakes a bit more setting up and requires extrasoftware, but if you listen to a lot of podcasts, and particularly if you want to keep up withthe whole series, then it’s the best way in thelong run.Sometimes, of course, you won't need to gothis far and it’s easiest just to download onehere or there, but it’s worth covering.21 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsHow do I subscribe to a podcast? To subscribe to a Podcast you need specialsoftware called a podcatcher. Examples ofthese are iTunes or Juice, but there are arange of options out there. Many music players have added podcatchingcapabilities to their range of options, Winampbeing a good example. Most of these optionsare free so you don’t have to pay a penny toget podcasting.Let’s take iTunes as an example of a podcatcher. It’s one of the most powerfulexamples thanks to its great podcastdirectory, included in the iTunes store. Plus,it’s almost certainly the most widely used.To subscribe you simply go to the iTunesstore, and type the subject you’re searchingfor into the search box.22 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsFor example, I’m going to search for a WebDesign podcast to keep up to date with mywork. The process is:1. I navigate to the Podcast section of theiTunes store, then type ‘web design’into the search box.2. Once I’ve done this iTunes will bring upall podcasts that include that phrase inthe title or description.3. I see one called The Boagworld Show, and click on that title or icon.23 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skills4. ITunes shows me the list of episodes inthat Podcast series and I can browsethrough.5. If I like what I see, I press the Subscribebutton, and that podcast is added tomy subscribe list.6. I go back to the search results and dothe same with ‘Think Vitamin’ and ‘TheSitepoint Podcast’.7. Then, upon clicking the Podcast sectionin the iTunes menu I see these threepodcasts in my subscribe list. Now, whenever I have iTunes running, it’llregularly check for new episodes of each ofthese podcasts. When I plug in my iPod,iTunes will delete old episodes that I havealready listened to and send new episodes tomy iPod, all ready for listening to when I’mnext out. I never need to check for newepisodes again – the newest episodes willalways be available to me on my player. For this method you need a computer, aninternet connection, a digital mp3 player24 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillsand a pod catcher applicationWhat If I don’t have an iPod?If you’re not using an apple device you won’tbe able to use iTunes, but have no fear; thereare plenty of good options out there. Forexample, Samsung produces its own iTunesequivalent called Samsung Smart Switch.Download and install Samsung Smart Switch, and straight away you’re ready to subscribeto Podcasts, just as in iTunes, and have themautomatically sync with your phone. It’s outside the scope of this book to list everyPodcast management app for every device, but it’s definitely worth a look on themanufacturer’s site in the first instance. Andif that doesn’t work, try googling “podcastapp X” where X is the name of your device. And if that fails, we’ll have a look at the nextsection – there’s a better alternative!25 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsMobile Podcasting AppsThe alternative to computer based softwareis to use a mobile Podcasting app. This meansthat you have an application on your phoneor device that manages all your podcastsubscriptions. So you never need to plug yourdevice into the computer again. Much easier!Apple have their own Podcasting app whichoffers a nice alternative to iTunes. It still takesadvantage of the iTunes store cataloguethough, so it has an excellent directory, and isone of the best Podcasting apps out there. If you have an Android device, though, don’tworry. There are some excellent Podcastingtools on the Android platform.BeyondPod is my favourite Podcasting appand the one I use to manage my ownpodcasts. It actually has a lot more flexibilitythan the Apple app, and is far more powerful. All if lacks is a really comprehensive directory, just relying on a slightly less powerful search. You can get around that, though, just by26 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillssearching for your Podcasts on the web, oreven using the iTunes store to search, andthen copying over the feed URL.Another alternative is DoggCatcher, and thereare a few more out there too. Stitcher gets aspecial mention as a great Podcastdistributer, and it has its own mobile app. Thedirectory is more limited than most, but ithosts some great Podcasts.27 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsManually Subscribing to a PodcastSo it is possible to automatically subscribe toa Podcast, whether it’s through the iTunesstore, the BeyondPod search, or otherwise.Sometimes, though, whatever platformyou’re using, you won’t be able to find thepodcast you’re looking for. In this case youneed to manually add a podcast to the player. This is accomplished by copying the webaddress (or URL) of the podcast RSS feed andpasting it into the pod catcher. All podcatchers will have a pretty prominent optionto ‘Add a Podcast.’ Upon selecting that it willask for the RSS feed address. You can normally find a podcast’s RSS feedaddress by looking at the website andfollowing links to ‘Subscribe’. It’s often verywell advertised.Other times you should look for the RSS icon,28 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillswhich is shown here. Afterclicking that icon you arenormally taken to the RSSfeed page. You can just copythe address of that page fromthe address bar in the browser and put it intoyour pod catcher.29 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsWhat Equipment Do INeed to Create aPodcast? You’ll be pleased to find out that creatingyour own podcast is amazingly easy, andrequires very little equipment. Even better, the equipment you do require is oftenalready available to you.In this section I’ll go through exactly what youneed to create your own podcast and whereyou could go about finding it.30 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & SkillsDigital Recording Devices for PodcastingThe most basic thing you need for anypodcast is a recording device. Naturally, tocreate an audio file, you need to be able torecord your voice!Recording devices take many forms, fromreally simple Dictaphones to full-qualityprofessional audio recorders.Plus, your computer can act as a recordingdevice – it’s easily possible to record a regular31 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillspodcast using no more than a laptop and itsinbuilt microphone. For good results, it’s normally desirable tohave at least a simple mobile recordingdevice. Without a recorder that you can carryaround, you’ll be stuck to your computer deskfor all your podcast creation and, especiallywith a group, that’s often not ideal. It’s worth spending more than the minimumon a recording device as the quality is verydependent on price. Moving above the 50 mark generally takes you into the range ofgood quality recorders, and you can spendinfinitely more than that it you try.Professional journalist level kit of this sortsells for 300 or 400 and comes with allsorts of features. I’ll mention one of this sortat the end of the section, but you shouldn’tfeel any pressure to jump in at that level. To get started, just buy what you can afford,or use the equipment you already haveavailable. Better to get started with basic kit32 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillsthan not at all!For my lower cost device, I use a Sony ICRecorder (ICD-UX71) – shown here. This costs around 30 to 40 and gives agreat quality sound for the price. It has a USBport on the bottom so you can plug it straightinto your computer, and it has an externalmicrophone socket so you can always plug abetter quality mic in at a later date if you33 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillsdecide you need the sound quality improved. For a higher end device, better quality soundand more recording options, look at theRoland R-05.It’s about twice the price of the Sony, and Ifind it a great little recorder. The soundquality is definitely better than the Sony, although only noticeable when you comparethem side by side and it just offers a few34 P a g e

How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skillsmore options when you’re doing yourrecordings. The Roland comes in around 140 on Amazonand would do perfectly for anyone, evenapproaching professional journalist level. For the real top-level though, in my opinion, you’re looking at the Zoom H4n recorder, shown above.
