Introduction toThe Billericay SchoolGCSE Examination Programme2019The aim of this booklet is to offer subject specific guidance to support students andparents as the Summer GCSE 2019 Examination season approaches.Students are provided with examination dates, key revision dates and details of allsupport materials on the school learning resource network. As a parent, we would ask that you remind your child to attend afterschool revisionsessions and continue to support them with encouragement and praise. This bookletprovides parents with the key information needed to ensure children are fully preparedfor examinations.Exams, particularly important public exams, are very stressful for students and probablyeven more so for parents. Obviously all children are different, so it follows that there isno single approach to how a parent can help, but here are some suggestions:Students who do best in Exams: have revised thoroughly and carefully feel confident have parents who take an interest in their child’s revisionWhat can parents do?Here is some general advice:Do Discuss with your child what will be involved during the revision period and whatyour role could be.Provide the environment necessary for success. Students need a place to revisewhich is quiet, calm and comfortable (probably the most important need isquiet), a tidy room but a visually stimulating study centre.Respond positively when asked for help. Ask exactly how you can help and if youcannot help immediately, say when it is convenient.Give plenty of praise and encouragement. Point out what they are good at; tellthem daily what they do well. Stay calm.Point out what your child has done well when you look at their work. Don’tdwell on errors, emphasise the positives.Keep your child supplied with food and drinks.Keep a low profile.Be prepared to listen when you child wants to talk about issues as everythingbecomes more emotional and heightened during the examination period.Encourage morning revision when the brain is more receptive and discouragestudying right up to when they go to bed.2

Don’t Make comparisons with brothers, sisters, friends and so on. Unintentionally add to their worries by constantly mentioning the exams. Relate too much to when you were sitting exams at school or how you revised orprepared. Worry if their revision techniques seem strange or unusual. Make a battle out of whether or not they listen to music when doing revision. Distract them unnecessarily. Expect them to study all of the time, as taking some time out to relax will have apositive effect on their work. Join in the general anxiety-stay calm, serene and confident. In SummaryThere is a great deal you can do as a parent. You cannot revise for them and howevermuch you would like to you cannot take the exams for them, but you can be invaluablein making the exam process smooth, calm and successful.GCSE (and A level) Exams 2019 - Contingency PeriodMay I also bring to your attention that the Joint Council for Qualifications haveannounced a contingency date for 2019 GCSE and A Level candidates: A contingencydate/s is a day/s specifically set aside, should sustained national or local disruption ariseduring the June 2019 examination series. If disruption happens, the GCSE and/or GCE (ALevel) examinations would be taken either for the first time or again on that day. The contingency period for 2019 is up to and including 26 June.Any students taking public examinations in 2019 should not plan a holiday or to be atany distance from school before 27 June 2019.To clarify, this is not a school decision and will apply to all candidates in all schools. Please remember we are here to support you and your child. Please do not hesitate tocontact the school for help and advice.Yours sincerelyMrs S SmearsDeputy Headteacher3
