IHMSA NEWSSEPTEMBER 2017LEGENDS OF SILHOUETTE#7 HULAN MATTHIESby the Old GuyIn the late 1980s silhouette shooting in Southern Californiaonly was sanctioned by the NRA. The reasons for this need notconcern us here. What does concern us is an achievement byone of the Southern California handgun silhouette crew whichis outstanding, so superior that no one even has come close to it,sort of like the 30x40 in 500 meter half size by Ted Zysk withwhich I began this series.I refer to an NRA aggregate score fired by Hulan Matthies backin 1988 or 1989. Hulan does not remember exactly what yearit was, and although I have known about it since it happened,I never made note of what year it was, only that it happened.During this period the NRA had a six gun aggregate for 40round local matches. This was made up of the usual four gunsIHMSA uses for its aggregate: Production (NRA Conventional),Revolver, Unlimited, and Standing, with the addition of HalfSize and Standing Any Sight. The highest possible score was240. At a two day match at the old Redlands Range, HulanMatthies shot 234x240.One interesting thing about this score is which were thecategories where he had the misses. I had long thought he hadshot 35x40 Standing, 39x40 Standing Any Sight, and four 40sin the other categories, but this was incorrect. Recently for thefirst time I actually interviewed him about it, and I learned I wasright about the 35x40 Standing, but he actually had shot 40x40in Standing Any Sight which was the only time he ever achievedthat. This has not been done more than a handful of times. Heshot 40x40 in Half Size and 40x40 in Revolver. It is rare thatsomeone shoots 40x40 in Half Size or Revolver, but to do themboth in the same match is remarkable in and of itself, but to do itat the same time as a 40x40 in Standing Any Sight and a 35x40Standing is truly a major achievement. It comes as no surprise that he shot 40x40 in Unlimited. Thisleaves us with a 39x40 in Production/Conventional. How in theworld did someone who had shot 40x40 both in Revolver andHalf Size manage to miss a target in Production/Conventional?Hereby hangs a sad tale of the gremlins which haunt even the tophandgun silhouette shooters. Hulan told me that in the middle ofreloading for this match he had emptied the canister of powderhe used in his Production/Conventional Pistol, and, withoutgiving it any further thought, he just opened a fresh canister andfinished loading. Alas after sighting in with rounds using the oldlot of powder, he came to the first turkey with the loads using thenew lot of powder, and he missed the first one because the newlot of powder produced a different point of impact. He adjustedhis sight accordingly and cleaned the rest of the targets.4This 234x240 record is unlikely ever to be broken not justbecause the NRA seems to have lost interest in handgunsilhouette and no one shoots this six gun aggregate anymore. Itis unlikely ever to be broken because even if all the top shotsall began shooting this aggregate tomorrow and kept at it forthe next ten years, it just is too outstanding that anyone willtop it. Congratulations, Hulan. You are one of the Legends ofSilhouette.

IHMSA NEWSSEPTEMBER 2017RELOADING 101:FIREFORMING CASESPosted on September 14, 2016 by Sierra BulletsWritten by Sierra Bullets Ballistic TechnicianDuane SiercksWhat is fireforming?Fireforming is the process of creating custom fitting cartridgecases for your specific firearm. Having the “custom” cases canbe very beneficial and really isn’t to hard to accomplish. I wantto hopefully shed some light on the process as we continue. When we buy shoes and clothes, we like for them to fit “justso”. We all have our own opinion as to what “just so” feels like. Each firearm has a preference for certain things in a load thatis being used in that firearm. It may be bullet weight or style;it could certainly be a powder selection and amount. These arejust a couple of examples to be found on a rather long list ofitems that need to be considered during the reloading process.Fireforming is also one of those items. This involves thecontrolled forming of the case and also the very controlledre-sizing of the fireformed case. There is also another use forfireforming, and that is called case-forming. This is actuallytaking one cartridge and alter the case to form anothercartridge. Such cartridges as the Ackley’s or Improved come tomind. Then also you have the many varied wildcat cartridges. This process often requires fireforming to be done. But ratherthan allowing this to get too far from the intended subject, Iwill to stick to the fireforming subject. Why do we want to fireform?Fireforming has two major goals.1. Extended case life.Brass case demand is very high right now, and supply is a bitshort. So, of course, this causes brass prices to be very high, ifand when you can find what you need. Fireforming can be a bighelp during this situation by helping to insure that your caseslast as long as possible. If done properly, you can be guaranteed8that case life will by extended by quite a bit. This does notexcuse us from careful observation of case and load issues thatcan and do arise. It does certainly minimize case stretching andcase loss due to excessive and repeated stretching.2. Potential for better accuracyNote that in the semi-autos (that are extremely popular) andlever action firearms that full length sizing is very muchrecommended. Due to their inability to chamber cases that arenot full length re-sized is very limited. A custom fitted casecan give you a much better opportunity at accuracy due toeliminating some accuracy robbing issues. When you are fulllength re-sizing, you almost always create problems that cancertainly rob you of accuracy performance A fireformed casehelps to align the bullet with the center of the bore which isalways beneficial when trying to squeeze out the last smidgenof accuracy. How do you fireform ?I want to mention that there is certainly more than one way tofireform. I will endeavor to help you understand the conceptand explain the more common version of fireforming. I willalso mention some other variations that are used too.The most common way:With a new case, we will want to seat a primer first off. Thenext step requires us to determine at what length the bullet(we want to use in the fireforming load) will touch the rifling.(It is best to use a heavier weight bullet for the cartridge andif available a flat base bullet.) Then, select a powder for thecartridge you are working with. The better powders are thosethat fall in the middle of the burn rate range for the cartridgeand bullet weight. Use a mid-range load with the powder andbullet selected. Then seat the bullet to touch the rifling. Thebullet touching the rifling causes the cartridge rim to be incontact with the bolt face or receiver, so that the firing pin strikecannot cause the case to be shoved forward. This then allowsthe case to expand to the chamber dimensions with out theweakening stretch that otherwise would take place. It is alwaysbest to use new unfired cases. Cases th
