Training Committee ReportFirearm Safety CornerA very Happy New Year to all. The year has startedout very cold and has an effect on our club andshooters. No, it didn’t!!! Our Protection Shoot onNew Year’s Eve was another success. The air wascold, but the sun was warm, the food was great, and our members and public shooters had a greattime. The new statistics are out for children and "untrainedadults," finding loaded firearms in the home they livein or visit. The story is always the same. Someonegets shot resulting in great injury and or death. Ialways take a few minutes in every class anddiscipline I teach to address this issue. I am sure weall are disgusted to see these incidents reported on thenightly news.We are moving forward with revised printings of thematerials we use in our Trap Classes and working todevelop more help on our training teams. I haveattended meetings with the Northern Illinois Huntingand Fishing Days Committee to discuss plans for the2018 event. We will be working on the first IDNR Hunter FieldDay Class in April, and I have already beencontacted by students wishing to enroll. The normalenrollment will begin in March. Watch the IDNRwebsite for DuPage County. Enrollment will belisted, on the site with contact information andrequirements. If our members have students with a6th grade reading level who wish to be enrolled, please feel free to contact me.I will also be offering training help with the NewarkSportsman’s Club Hunter Education classes againthis summer. They offer a full 10-hour two-day classthree times a season. Again, watch the IDNR websiteunder Kendall County for registration dates. Thisclass has one of the most Master Volunteer HunterEducation Instructors for Region Three in ourstate. It gives us the opportunity to share ourknowledge, and experiences, to make us betterInstructors. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the fact that I will beundergoing knee replacement to the right knee. Itwill be on March 6th due to a progressive conditionthat must finally be addressed. I have every hope thatthis will not interfere with our training programs forthis year. Our membership and training teams willbe handling all that is needed. I will be at all theevents in the near future but limited to the physicalrequirements for a while.Be SafeDave PaulinskiTraining Committee ChairThere are three things to consider in having one ofthese incidents occur. One is a gun. Two isammunition. Three is a human being. Take awayANY one item, and this cannot occur. Keepfirearms unloaded and secured. Not out of sight butsecured. Keep ammunition secured and separatedfrom the firearm. Teach children; Do Not Touch, Getan Adult. (This goes for the "untrained adult," also.)No one is making you go buy a 1,000 lb. gunsafe. Small and convenient lockable safes areavailable at very inexpensive costs. Taking yourshotgun, putting it in a gun sock, and sticking itin your closet, is NOT considered safestorage. Breaking the shotgun down to beinoperable, unloaded, cased and put in a closet issafe. Separate the ammunition and put a 3.00trigger lock on the gun before casing and storing, issafe. With very little effort and cost we can all contributeto the effort of reducing these reports to zero. Ifyou have a family member, neighbor, or friend whoowns a firearm, let them know how to safelyoperate, store and care for their firearms. It onlytakes a few minutes and may save a life down theroad. Stay diligent, and proactive. Working togetherwe can reach zero on these reports.Dave PaulinskiNRA CRSO
