Email: president@asma.orgWeb site: www.asma.orgFacebook: Aerospace Medical AssociationTwitter: @Aero MedPresident’s PageYour AsMA advanced team, including yours truly, recently completed a site visit of next year’s meeting at theSwan and Dolphin hotel complex in Orlando, FL(www.swandolphin.com). These hotels provide ample capacity for all our scientific sessions, meetings, social gatherings, and exhibits. The staff was professional and accommodatingand the grounds were beautiful and impressive, located on alake front, complete with its own beachfront, and close to theDisney attractions. I hope you and your families will plan toenjoy all this venue has to offer. The theme for this year’s annual scientific meetingshould be no surprise to anyone following my president’spages. It is “Making a Difference in Aerospace Medicine.”Our meeting will address how we have been improving ourunderstanding and impact on our field’s current challenges. What knowledge gaps were filled by key work, what researchwas done in solving a critical problem, what scientific information or activities supported a change in viewpoints or policy? How have we demonstrated our impacts on improvingthe health, safety and human performance of those involvedin aviation, space and extreme environments?Below is a story from Royce Moser, former President ofAsMA, who reminds us that we can make a difference in ourfield by helping the next AsMA generation.Helping the Next GenerationMy colleagues will be “shocked” to learn that I can remember my first Aerospace Medical Association ScientificMeeting since I am so “Chronologically Challenged,” recentlyreceiving my 50 year membership pin. However, that firstmeeting stands out because I almost missed it.I fortunately had Ross McFarland, Ph.D. as my supervisor in the Harvard MPH portion of my Residency inAerospace Medicine (RAM) program. His studies of humanfactors in air transport played a major role in convincing theairlines to pressurize passenger cabins. He was well-knownand highly respected in both aerospace medicine and industry communities. The AsMA meeting would be held in New York City, andDr. McFarland wanted all RAMs to attend. After the meetingwe would tour aircraft manufacturing facilities in the area.Dr. McFarland asked me to contact the Air Force Institute ofTechnology, which funded our time at Harvard, to see if theRAMs could be funded to attend the meeting.I clearly remember my conversation with a lieutenantcolonel at AFIT. I stated our request, and the response was“Captain, can’t you read? If you can read you can see thatParagraph xx, sub-paragraph xxx, sub-sub paragraph xxxx, clearly states there will be no funding of travel during theacademic phase of the residency. Now don’t bother meagain!” “Yes, Sir.”The next day Dr. McFarland asked if I had called AFIT. I recounted my experience. Dr. McFarland calmly stated howdisappointed he was. After the class, I overheard Dr.McFarland asking his secretary to see if General Bohannonwas free. I wondered why he was calling the SurgeonGeneral, but thought no more of it.Philip J. Scarpa, Jr., M.D., M.S.Later, when I arrived home to our apartment, Loisgreeted me with “There’s a Colonel from AFIT that has beencalling, and you’re to call him as soon as you get here.” Ireplied that it was now too late to call so I would call tomorrow. “No! He said he would be in his office until you returned, so call him now.” I did, and the earlier “Captain”salutation had been replaced by “Doctor”, with apologies thatthe Lt. Col. had failed to note travel would “certainly” be approved if the Program Director required it. He then asked if Icould call Dr. McFarland that evening to advise him the tripwas funded. When I called, Dr. McFarland responded, “Isn’tthat nice, Royce?” (It took me a while to put two and two together.)The meeting was great, and I learned from discussionsby “giants” in our field. I knew only my classmates and Lt.Col. “Chuck” Berry, whom Dr. McFarland arranged for me tomeet while I was in medical school. However, everyone wasoutgoing and friendly, and I was enthused after I attendedthe meeting. The next year, Col. George R. Anderson, my RAM supervisor, “volunteered” me to take minutes at the EducationCommittee meeting. This opened up new opportunities tomeet leaders in our field, and I soon found I was learning asmuch from these interactions as from the scientific meetings. Many members I met in committee work became life-longfriends, and Lois had the same experience in The Wing. As Iparticipated in committees, I was impressed by the contributions of our members. For example, each November over 80Program Committee members meet, many at their own expense, to select scientific sessions. I know of no other organization with such dedicated members. When I was President, I recalled my experience as a newmember. I did a President’s Page welcoming new membersand encouraging them to become actively involved in the numerous opportunities in our organization as I did. A fewyears ago, a member told me how impressed he was that Iwould devote a President’s Page to welcoming new members, as he was when he read the Page. He found active participation very rewarding, and today he is your President!Making a difference by helping the next AsMA generation. You never know!Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine Vol. 85, No. 9 September 2014977

Association NewsWalt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort –This is no Mickey Mouse Operation!By Jeffrey Sventek, Executive DirectorThe 86th Annual Scientific Meeting of theAerospace Medical Association is scheduledfor May 2015 at the Walt Disney World Swanand Dolphin Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL.In preparation for next year’s meeting, a smallgroup of AsMA and FAA leaders visited thismeeting site to ensure we understand thevenue layout and begin the process of assigning scientific session rooms, committee meeting rooms, AsMA Wing Hospitality room, registration space, and organizing the exhibit hallspaces. The last time I visited the Orlando, FL,area was in 1998, when our family drove fromVirginia to Orlando to visit Walt DisneyWorld and other theme park attractions in thearea. I was anxious to see what changes hadoccurred in Orlando over the past 16 years.I arrived at the Orlando InternationalAirport (MCO) and immediately realized thearea had grown significantly in 16 years. Theairport is a very large and modern facility capable of managing a large number of aircraftfrom international locations. Getting aroundthe airport and to the baggage claim was quiteeasy. I retrieved my bag and stepped outsideto find my Super Shuttle ride. We loaded intothe van and began our circuitous trip to theDolphin Hotel. Unfortunately, I was the lastof six shuttle passengers so it took a little morethan one hour and a very scenic tour of theOrlando area before I arrived at my hotel.Direct transport from the airport to theDolphin Hotel is about 30-35 minutes, depending on traffic.I arrived at the Swan and Dolphin Resorta little after 10 PM. The Swan and Dolphinhotels sit beside each other within the resort. All of our scientific sessions and committeemeetings and most social events will takeplace in the Dolphin Hotel. The AsMA roomblock is also in the Dolphin. However, if ourDolphin Hotel room block fills, overflow accommodations will be made at the SwanHotel. It is a very short and easy walk between the two hotels. Of significance, theSwan and Dolphin hotels are offering roomsfor all attendees at the US Government perdiem rate. Currently, the per diem room ratefor the Orlando area is 101.00 U.S. plus applicable taxes per night! What a great roomrate for our meeting. Of note, there is also aResort Fee that includes unlimited domesticlong distance and local calls, unlimited access to the resort’s health club facilities, tennis equipment and access to lighted courts, seasonal pool and recreational activities, inroom high-speed Internet access, and 2 bottles of water daily. This fee is usually 23plus tax per day but we are working with thehotel to get a discounted rate.As I entered the Dolphin Hotel, I wastaken by the very large lobby area with itslarge fountain. There were numerous sittingareas for people to gather and chat. Check-inwas efficient and the reservation personnelwere extremely nice. With key in hand, Iwent to my room.I found my room to be a good size withnice furniture and amenities. The bathroomwas large with nice fixtures and was veryclean. Exhausted, I immediately preparedfor bed. I found the Westin’s Heavenly Bedto be very comfortable. What a great night’ssleep! The next morning, I met with Walt andPhil Galanty of AIM Meetings & Events. Wewalked the facility to get familiar with thevenue and to prepare ourselves for the official site visit scheduled for the next day. Wefound the Dolphin Hotel offered a very largeamount of terrific meeting spaces for ourAnnual Scientific Meeting. However, I was alittle disappointed with the large ballroomspace the hotel was offering us for our plenary sessions and large events. It was located on the 1st floor very near the ExhibitHall space. This location was not ideal forour Continuing Medical Education activities.Phil Galanty made a note to discuss thisspace during the next day’s official tour withthe hotel staff. Walt, Phil and I had a wonderful dinner at the Shula’s Restaurant located inside the Dolphin Hotel and turned infor the evening. The following morning, our team gathered for a wonderful breakfast provided bythe Dolphin Hotel. The AsMA team included Phil Scarpa (AsMA President), JohnDarwood (AsMA Arrangements CommitteeChair), Walt and Phil Galanty (AIMMeetings & Events), Donnel Chandler andSee SWAN & DOLPHIN, p. 979.Future AsMA AnnualScientific MeetingsMay 10-14, 2015Walt Disney WorldSwan & Dolphin ResortLake Buena Vista, FLApril 24-28, 2016Harrah's ResortAtlantic City, NJApril 29 - May 4, 2017Sheraton Denver DowntownHotel Denver, COMay 6-10, 2018Hilton Anatole HotelDallas, TX978Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine Vol. 85, No. 9 September 2014

SWAN & DOLPHIN, from p. 978.Trellis Woods (AV Century Solutions), KrisHerlitz (The Herlitz Company – ExhibitsManager), Els Salisbury and Meg Smyrski(AsMA Wing), Jan Wright (FAA), and me.Following breakfast, the AsMA team introduced ourselves to the Dolphin Hotel Teamand they then returned the favor. We discussed some of the unique activities for ourAnnual Scientific Meeting and then we wereoff to walk the property with the DolphinHotel staff. Our tour offered us the opportunity tocarefully view all of the meeting space available to us for the 86th Annual ScientificMeeting in the Dolphin Hotel. The meetingspace is exceptional with large rooms and highceilings in most areas. Phil Galanty raised theissue of the 1st floor ballroom and asked if wecould exchange that space for the ballroom located on the 5th floor. Afterall, the 5th floor iswhere all of the other space for the scientificsessions is located. The hotel staff informed usthat space was already assigned to anothermeeting activity and they would have to coordinate our request with that organization.Fortunately, one week after our site visit wereceived word that the other organizationagreed to swap the ballroom spaces with usand we now have all of 5th floor meetingspace, including the large ballroom! Manythanks to Phil and Walt Galanty for makingthis happen. We were all impressed with the many outside spaces. Two outside areas were identifiedas possible sites for social events. However, asthe weather in Florida can sometimes be quitewet, we must ensure we have proper indoorspace reserved should we need to move thesocial events back indoors. As you are probably all aware, The WaltDisney World Swan and Dolphin is anEpcot resort hotel.
