ST. LUKE LUTHERAN CHURCHBy grace, we know, love, worship and serveJesus Christ as we proclaim His Good News.Welcome to St. Luke Lutheran Church. We are glad that God brought you to worship with us today. We rejoice in your presence among us this morning to praise and adore our Lord Jesus Christ! Please take a moment to fill out a Visitor Card located in the pew rack in front of you and drop itin the offering plate, so that we may have a record of your visit. Please come back and join us soon. You are always most welcome at St. Luke.July 11, 2021Seventh Sunday after PentecostWhen Amos reports his vision of God judging Israel for its mistreatment of the poor, he becomes a threatto the power of the priests and the king. John the Baptist also speaks truth to power, and Herod has himkilled. In Herod’s fear that Jesus is John returned from the dead, we may hear hope for the oppressed:all the prophets killed through the ages are alive in Jesus. We are called to witness to justice in companywith them, and to proclaim God’s saving love.Liturgy for Today: We will Worship today using liturgy and hymns from the red EvangelicalLutheran Worship Book, also known as the ELW. PRAYER OF THE DAYPThe Lord be with you.CAnd also with you.PLet us pray.O God, from you come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works.Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments;and also that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.CAmen.(We sit)After every reading:THE WORDA: The Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.FIRST LESSON: Amos 7:7-15Amos is not the kind of prophet attached to temples or royal courts. Rather, he is an ordinaryfarmer from Judah (the southern kingdom) called by God to speak to Israel (the northern kingdom).God’s word of judgment through Amos conflicts with the king’s court prophet Amaziah, whomAmos encounters at Bethel.7This is what the Lord God showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumbline, with a plumb line in his hand. 8And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And Isaid, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of mypeople Israel; I will never again pass them by; 9the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboamwith the sword.”10Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos hasconspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear allhis words. 11For thus Amos has said, ‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go intoExile away from his land.’ ”12And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; 13but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it isa temple of the kingdom.”14Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I am no prophet, nor a prophet’s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees, 15and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lordsaid to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ ”6

PSALMODY: Psalm 85:8-13sung by Luci HughesI will listen to what the Lord God is saying. (Ps. 85:8)8I will listen to what the Lord God is saying;for you speak peace to your faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to you.9Truly, your salvation is very near to those who fear you, that your glory may dwell in our land. R10Steadfast love and faithfulness have met together;righteousness and peace have kissed each other.11Faithfulness shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.12The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase.13Righteousness shall go be- fore the Lordand shall prepare for God a pathway. R7

SECOND LESSON: Ephesians 1:3-14In Jesus, all of God’s plans and purposes have been made known as heaven and earth are unitedin Christ. Through Jesus, we have been chosen as God’s children and have been promised eternalsalvation.3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ withevery spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4just as he chose us in Christ before thefoundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5He destined us foradoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6tothe praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In him we haveredemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of hisgrace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has made known to us themystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10as a plan forthe fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11InChrist we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purposeof him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who werethe first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritancetoward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.(We stand)GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Congregation singsBefore the reading:PThe Holy Gospel, according to Saint Mark, the sixth chapter.CGlory to you, O Lord.8

GOSPEL: Mark 6:14-29As Jesus and his disciples begin to attract attention, Mark recalls the story of John the Baptist’smartyrdom. Like John, Jesus and his disciples will also suffer at the hands of those opposed to thegospel of salvation.14King Herod heard of the disciples’ preaching, for Jesus’ name had become known. Somewere saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason thesepowers are at work in him.” 15But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom Ibeheaded, has been raised.”17For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison onaccount of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. 18For John hadbeen telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19And Herodias hada grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, 20for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, hewas greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. 21But an opportunity came whenHerod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders ofGalilee. 22When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests;and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.” 23And hesolemnly swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.”24She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” She replied, “The head ofJohn the baptizer.” 25Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, “I want you togive me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26The king was deeply grieved; yetout of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27Immediately theking sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded himin the prison, 28brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to hermother. 29When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb. After the reading:P The Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to you, O Christ.(We sit)CHOIR ANTHEM, “Down to the Water to Pray”HOMILY(Silence for reflection)9

What are vestments and why are they used?Vestments are the distinctive clothing worn by those who lead worship. They are wornby pastors, lay assisting ministers, acolytes, communion ministers, choirs and cantors.Vestments are more related to uniforms than costumes; they communicate the role ofthe leader. They also say that an individual is functioning in a particular relationship toa community of believers and connected to a recognizable, historic pattern of leadership. The distinctive clothing worn by police officers, judges, and nurses communicates theirrole; vestments function in a similar way. This differs from wearing a costume andpretending to be something or someone else. Using vestments in idiosyncratic waysconfuses and undermines identification with a role, just as dressing a judge as a policeofficer only confuses and makes the uniform a pretense. Vestments, like uniforms, ought to communicate clearly and honestly.Worship leaders wear vestments on behalf of the assembly. Wearing white garmentssuch as the alb reminds us of the white garment presented or worn at baptism. Thecolors of vestments, especially those worn by the pastor or displayed as paraments, communicate the liturgical season. The use of vestments in Lutheran churches is not dictated by any law and will varyaccording to local customs and practice. What is most important is that congregationstake the time to understand that what we wear will carry meaning. When used clearlyand with understanding, vestments (with other visual arts and symbols) “embody andsupport the proclamation of the word of God”.The use of vestments varies ecumenically. The Episcopal Church, one of our fullcommunion partners, ordains deacons. In this tradition, a special stole is worn to marktheir ordained ministry.Diaconal ministers, a lay roster of the ELCA, do not wear stoles, but may wear avestment called a dalmatic.Like other clothing, the exact design of vesture in the church varies over time accordingto artistic development. Congregations are using rediscovered traditional and excitingcontemporary design as they explore ways to use vesture in worship. Commercialvestment makers are not the only source for vesture. Artists and designers also work inthis area. Many congregations seek out those talented in working with cloth to designand make vestments that reflect the local culture and artistic tastes. The wearing of vestments can present challenges. Many people do not understand thebaptismal connection of the alb. In all situations regarding vestments, congregations areencouraged to fully explain and understand why certain vestments are used.In certain contexts, practical concerns can affect the wearing of vestments, especiallyby choirs. In non-air conditioned worship spaces, they can simply be too warm in thesummer months.24
