It will be rebroadcast on Tuesday, January 26 at 10:00 a.m.Please note: The present buses are filled for the bus trip on Wednesday, January 27, but thereis a standby list. If there is enough interest, I can organize another trip in a few months. Signup in the Transportation office if you are interested. Pandemic restrictions at this time arefive people per bus with masks.Follow the link below for a video on Bryn Gweled Homesteads.https://youtu.be/o3UEE04txMM (one hour, eight minutes)One of the houses I described is where I grew up, designed and built by my dad, HansPeters. It had built-in window seats in the living room where the seat could be lifted up forstorage of camping gear. Bookcases lined a wall in the living room. All the bedrooms hadbuilt-in dressers; mine and my mom's had vanities and shallow drawers for scarves andjewelry. I had about 25 drawers lining a wall, with storage above. Both my brother and I hadbuilt in desks. I miss all those drawers of different sizes. Lew Woodman, whom some mayremember, worked for my dad for many years. Lew was a Pennswood resident who passed in2019. He was a wonderful carpenter, woodworker and friend. Please see the website www.bryngweled.org.To borrow the new book, Growing Up with Bryn Gweled by Marty Jo Paxson Grundy, youcan put your name on the library request/hold list.Jonathan Sprout and Rodney Wittenberg of Force for Good have created several lovelyvideos about community, mostly about Bryn Gweled Homesteads. What we know is it isn’t possible to havean environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, socially just human presence on thisplanet until we end separation based on the lie of white supremacy.Whiteness. What is it? Who created it? And why? Who benefits? Who pays? What has it madepossible? What does it destroy? And for those of us who identify as white, how will weleverage our privilege? We invite you to join us on a journey that may at times be painful as we discover our ownignorance and complicity in a system that has been intentionally designed to oppress peopleof difference “races.” You may find yourself asking uncomfortable questions: Do I valuecomfort and convenience more than a world that is really welcoming and inclusive? If not, what can I (what should I) do?Videos and readings will be accessible online. Sign up by Monday, February 1 on the Peace &Social Justice Bulletin board. 32 nd Annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival of theArts and Humanities [NOW VIRTUAL!]“I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow dammed up in my soul, norlurking behind my eyes. No, I do not weep at the world—I am too busysharpening my oyster knife.”These words got Zora Neale Hurston into big trouble with some of her peers whothought she was distancing herself from the history and lives of her people. Didthis stop Zora from being bigger than life or full of spunk? If you read Their Eyes Were Watching God as part of the Pennswood Book Club or on your own,you know the answer to this question is a resounding NO! The life and work of this indomitablespirit, great literary figure and anthropologist has been celebrated in her hometown of Eatonville,Florida the last week in January for the last 32 years.I was fortunate enough to serve as academic consultant for the first Zora Neale Hurston Festivalwhen I was teaching in the Anthropology Department at Rollins College. After relocating to otheruniversity faculty, I traveled back to Eatonville for many of the annual festivals, and I have neverbeen disappointed by the quality and depth of programming in the Arts and Humanities. Harvard’sHenry Louis “Skip” Gates, New York Times Columnist E. Charles M. Blow, and literary figuresAlice Walker and Maya Angelou have appeared as keynotes presenters. The themes of conferencesand forums have ranged from the African Diaspora to Afro-futurism.The Zora festival has attracted visitors, scholars, and media coverage from Europe, Asia, andAfrica. In fact, the internationality of the festival is one of the traits that’s made gathering inEatonville so exciting. Due to COVID, we will not gather en masse in Zora’s hometown this year.Instead, many people from around the globe will be part of the festival virtually! Now you canexperience Zora’s festival for free, from the comfort of your Pennswood home. Please complete the required registration at zorafestival.org.Tuesday, January 26 (Virtual Program)7:00 - 9:00 p.m.Inaugural Session: Community ConversationsRace and Economic Realities in 21st Century America — Featuring Dr. William A.Darity, Jr.African and African American Studies, and Economics at Duke University - First of aThree-Part Series on Race and Economic Realities in 21st Century America.Thursday, January 28 (Virtual Program)8:00 a.m. - 1:45 p.m. (Accommodating the 7-hour time difference with West Africa)Africa - America Women’s Economic ForumTheme: Women Empowered for Economic Revival Beyond the Pandemic and Injustice: TheSequel to the 2020 Inaugural ForumFriday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30 (Two-Day Virtual Program)10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.Afrofuturism Conference: “Afrofuturism — What is its sound?”Sponsored by the University of Central Florida – College of Arts and Humanities inCollaboration with ZORA! New to the LibraryWASTEby Catherine Coleman FlowersThe author's life work has become ensuring human dignitythrough a right most Americans take for granted: basicsanitation. In Lowndes, Alabama, where the author grew up, about90 percent of septic tanks are failing or inadequate. Raw sewagebacks up into homes. In 2017, the first outbreak of hookwormoccurred in decades.Flowers calls this America's dirty secret. In this powerful book, she tells the story of systemic class, racial and geographicconditions that foster Third World conditions not just in Alabamabut across America.Rosemarie , Library CommitteeThe NY Times Science—Virtual Discussion GroupThursday, January 28 at 11:00 a.m.To join our meeting: Email Marcia . The New Sharing Travel Adventuresin the Era of Covid-19—Zoom—and No TravelSallie Henrie and her team started the new era by extending the annual Travel Photo Exhibit withdual, back-to-back shows. We hope you saw both shows. If you didn’t see them, you missed tworeally fine ones. For Travel Adventure Programs, STA, like most of Pennswood, initially hunkered down, waiting forbetter days and the reopening of Penn Hall.Since that hasn’t happened (yet anyway), STA began exploring how to reinvent itself. On January 13, STA officially joined the Zoom Generation with a travel program by Miriam on amission trip she took in 1997 to Kenya. The presentation technology is not easy, and it’s not likepresenting to the home-team crowd in Penn Hall, but we do have excellent technical assistancefrom fellow resident Richmond .The important thing is that we’ve begun again to share travel adventures, even thoughwe still can’t engage in real travel. Perhaps travel adventures with friends at Pennswood ismore important than ever now, during this time of pandemic, social isolation, etc.Travel Tables also expects to reinvent itself soon. The challenge is how to use the new technologycreatively to offer informal opportunities for residents to share their exciting, outlandish, scary, disastrous, sublime, etc. travel stories without the benefit of real dinner, wine, etc. in the MainDining Room. Naomi Lennox is working on a plan. Stay tuned.STA remains ambitious and determined. But we’re a small cadre with a large agenda and needs foradditional involvement and new, creative ways of thinking. If YOU are a travel enthusiast and have been inspired by this message, please follow through bycontacting me, the chair of the committee. I would love to talk with you about the possibility ofyou joining us.David, Sharing Travel Adventures1/22/202110
