POTE’SNOTESSummer time in Virginia means roadpaving and one of the main reasons forthis is your Divan is burning up the roads! Since my last letter,ACCA has been a flurry of activity. The ceremonial created11 new nobles. These are energetic individuals who we welcome into our fold. Our next ceremonial is in November, soit’s not too early to be turning in petitions. Our first Temple Family Dinner, the brain child of Ill. PhilGodwin, was a great success. We served 74 attendees. TheMotor Patrol put on a feast fit for a king and all reported having a great time. Our next Family Dinner is scheduled forSeptember 30. Please make your reservations early and avoidthe cut off.The One Hundred Forty-Second Annual Session of Shiners’International is complete. The Imperial Session affords yourrepresentatives the opportunity to unite and exchange ideaswith our counterparts from other temples from all over the2world. Your representatives, while tired from the trip, havereturned with ideas of how to improve ACCA. There wereseveral changes of the law that were passed. The position ofDeputy Imperial Potentate was eliminated. This change willalign the officers of ACCA with the Imperial officers. Ournew Imperial Potentate is Imperial Sir Chris Smith, WahabiShiners’. Imperial Sir Jerry Gantt, the junior past ImperialPotentate, was elected as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. On September 10th from 12 to 5, your First Lady is hostingthe fourth annual Red, White, and Brew. This event will beheld rain or shine and feature wines from local wineries, craftand domestic beer, live music, food, and great socializing. Please keep the business office apprised of any impendingevent or need. We need you to help us help you. I look forward to seeing you soon.Yours in the Faith,Jimi Duke, PotentateFrom TheRECORDER’SPENFrom TheEDITOR’SDESKDear Nobles and Ladies,The representatives of the Iowa and Colorado Corporations have made ourannual pilgrimage to the 142nd Imperial Council Session. This year it washeld at home in Tampa. The most notable changes to the bylaws are theelimination of the Deputy Imperial Potentate thus reducing the number ofImperial Officers to 12. Other legislation passed is the use of shriners namesfor solicitation purposes by Imperial for purchasing items you may be interested in owning. The remaining legislation was mainly housekeeping items. The summer storms have not been friendly to Acca. Since the tree fell onour meeting room No. 1 we have been busy getting an engineering survey andsafe guarding the contents of the room. We are communicating with ouradjuster and waiting for the results of the survey and the adjusters report.Once we have these in hand we will proceed accordingly. We have to look at membership with a sincere approach. Our currentnumbers are 1368 total members, creations 11, affiliations 2, restorations 1,6 demits, 2 suspensions, 32 deaths. There are 95 members that have not paidthe 2016 dues and 33 that have not paid 2015 and 2016 dues. If all trendscontinue we will start 2017 with less than 1300 members. These numbers arealarming and we should be concerned because this problem is every member’s problem. Club and Unit leaders must encourage recruitment, retention, and restoration from their members. As a member of the Board of Directors I am encouraging our board to getmore input to us to facilitate planning the future of Acca Shriners based onthe paragraph above. If anyone has any recommendations please forwardthem to the office and we will look into your ideas.SASA will be upon us before we know it. We have several of our units andclubs participating in the parade and I wish each of them success as theycompete for trophies and just fun. With Fraternal Regards,Ben D. “Pete” Holder, PP, RecorderNobles, Ladies and Friends of Acca Shrine. GreetingsWe trust you will find information in this issue of the Accalette bothinteresting and informative. The key word is participation, participation, participation. If you are not in a unit or club join one. Take part in itsactivity, meetings and events. Participate and be active! Remember it’syour temple. As we move through the next several months we know our units andclubs nobles are looking forward to our South Atlantic Shrine Association(SASA) convention which will take place September 14th through the17th 2016 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Nobles if you and your ladyare going to the beach let’s all support our units and clubs that are participating in the convention events during the week. SASA businessmeeting on Thursday, unit competition on Friday, Band performances onFriday, and parade/competition on Saturday afternoon.Nobles, each of us has a chance to do something special for AccaShrine, your unit or club and that Special Mason you may know. Yes, youas part of team ACCA can make a difference and we can, with your helphave once again a positive membership in ACCA Shrine. But we needyour help. Nobles get a petition signed by a worthy Mason and let’smake our fall Ceremonial a great one for ACCA on November 18th and19th, 2016. It’s all up to you.Lastly Nobles, remember it’s your temple, our organization and ourShrine Hospitals for Children “the World’s Greatest Philanthropy”. Weall need to remember our Blue Lodges, Scottish and York Rite and AccaShrine.Sincerely and Fraternally,“A Beacon of Hope”Paul W. Lanier, Managing EditorTHE ACCALETTE

Hot days of summer lend their timefrom hard work in the yard to sitting in ashady spot re-hydrating ourselves. Manyconcerns flood our minds and others juststreak through like lightning. Take time whenyou can to just be still and hear what God hasto say. It could be as simple as a reflection of paths we’ve chosen, counting your blessings, enjoying the creations of Godwithin our view, how the kids are getting along or just simplybreathing deeply and enjoying the peace. Make time to be withGod.The Masonic year is drawing to a close. Leaders will alwayshave varying degrees of excitement about that point. Continue tosupport your leaders as their year draw to a close. Check withthose moving up to see if they need any advice, help filling acommittee or just someone to bounce ideas off of. Be the Brotheryou had, or wished you had when you went through. Be theexample others can follow. Be the lighthouse to someone thatmay be still looking for their path.Jonathan TurnerSouthside Shrine ClubWe held our last meeting of the summer on June 8th with a“cook in” at the Amelia 101 Masonic Lodge. Legion of HonorJune and July have been a busy time for the Legion! We startedoff with Ole Timers’ Night and Ladies Night Out on June 1. Bothevents were well attended. Ills. Sir Robert Puffenbarger and Noble Gordon “Bucky” Newsome were honored at Ole Timer’s Nightas long serving Legionnaires. We had a great steak dinner preparedand served by the Motor Patrol. Our guest speaker was active dutyMarine Corp. Major Andrew C. Eckert from Quantico. He gave anexcellent update on military life today. It makes one proud to seethe caliber of young men who are serving and protecting our country! As the Legionnaires were meeting in the Assembly Room, ourladies were having a grand garden party in the Legion room. LadyRebecca arranged for a program on Miniatures presented by hersister Nancy Burton and her mother, Irwin Sherman. Rumor has itthat the room has never looked so good! The Spring Ceremonial came next. The Legion and Arab Patrol had a great spread, plenty of liquid refreshments, and a greattime hosting the nobles (old, new, and visiting) and their ladies. We always look forward to being with all the other unit and clubmembers of ACCA. And speaking of getting together with theother members of ACCA, the Legion had the honor of serving asbartenders at the first ACCA Family Dinner on June 24th. PastCommanders Tom Snead and Walter Trower did a great job behind the bar!Cdr. Gonzalez said “I’ve known Walt a long time and personallyknow how well deserving of this Award he is. ACCA Shrine ismade up of a lot of great Nobles that are hard-working in the Legion of Honor. Great Job, Walt!” Walter has been commander ofthe ACCA Legion of Honor and the SASA Legion of Honor. Heis also the backbone of all Legion events and our Master Chef!Having started June with food, what better way to end Julythan with a great picnic on one of the hottest days of the summer! Mini Patrol –Are Parades a Dying Community Event? While we know not every Shriner participates in parades, thestock and trade of the Mini Patrol is the parade route. It is on theroadways of our local communities that we do our best work. Itis while performing the basket weave, the four-way pass, andthe figure eight that we feel the energy of the people along theparade route and we hear their shouts and applause. It is withinthe communities that we share our love for our hospitals and ourchildren but we have noticed decreasing attendance at some ofthe parades. It seems as if, for some towns, the effort to blockoff traffic, and coordinate the parade is too much, but then wesee a child, a child who has never seen a mini car and her eyeslight up, she laughs, giggles, and smiles when we allow her to sitbehind the wheel of a little orange car. We parade not only for thechildren but for ourselves. We spend time on the side roads of communities with likeminded men who share our passion for helping others. We learnabout one another, we find lasting friendships, and we take timeto share ourselves with others as we have fun. It is fun to worktogether. Fun to remember the joy in the faces of the children.Fun to be pulled by the Hillbilly Unit when we drop a chain andfun later when we watch the crowd help that same Hillbilly unitpush their car into a gas station because they ran out of gas in theSAVE the DATE!4th Annual Red, White and Brew FestivalSaturday, September 10, 2016parade.
